This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

Inspired by the entrepreneurial show “Shark Tank,” students in the creative writing class at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District had to come up with their own ideas for products. One of the essential elements of the class is having students generate ideas by tapping into their imaginations, and this project accomplished just that. ‘Snow’ Much Fun At Susan E. Wiley a science experiment, the students hypothesized about whether or not oil and water in a mason jar could mix together or stay separated. The resulting experiment, with a bit of added glitter, created a snowstorm in a jar. Using baking soda and hair conditioner, the students even made their own snow inside the classroom. Snow paint was created using flour, salt

Among that ideas that students presented were a cooking machine called the Food-O-Matic 3000 and an shoe app that would notify someone when new sneakers come out and where they could be purchased. Ms. Pallini said that their products were very imaginative. As the goal of the project was to win over a theoretical panel of investors, Ms. Pallini said that this will help them going forward with persuasive writing pieces.

It was an indoor snow day for the first graders at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District when they celebrated the white weather with plenty of hands-on lessons. Dressed in their warmest pajamas, students started the day by reading snow-themed books and practicing their writing and math skills with snow-based activities. As

students presented to their classmates as if they were potential investors. Each group created a Google Slide presentation and had to include a description of the product or service, why it is relevant in 2020, the cost, an advertising campaign plan, a catchy jingle or slogan, product review quotes and the investment cost. Health & Wellness 3 Tips When Reading Nutrition Facts Labels Much about trips to the grocery store has changed since many adults were children. Many grocery stores are considerably larger than they were as recently as 20 years ago and now sell everything from traditional grocery store fare to clothing to items one might expect to find in a hardware store. Another aspect of grocery shopping that has changed over the years is the groceries themselves. Nutrition labels have been around for decades, though today’s labels contain considerably more information than they did in years past. As a result, many shoppers, even those who make sure to read product labels before placing items in their shopping carts, may not know exactly what they’re buying. Nutrition labels can be complicated, and ingredients that are beneficial for some consumers may be harmful to others. Seniors and people with existing medical conditions should always discuss their diets with their physicians, asking if there are specific foods they should avoid or seek out. In addition, the following three tips, courtesy of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, can help consumers understand nutrition labels and make sound choices. 1. Read the serving size information Serving size information on nutrition labels indicates both the recommended serving size and the number of servings contained in t he package. The AND recommends that consumers compare the portion size they actually eat to the serving size listed on the label. Some people may consume more than one serving size per meal, and that can affect just how much of each ingredient,

Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous. However, despite the many

proclaimed benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm.
