www.fcali.org With locations across Nassau and Suffolk, Family & Children’s Association (FCA) is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to providing help and hope to Long Island’s most vulnerable children, families, seniors and communities. FCA envisions a Long Island where a legacy of optimal health, educational success and economic security passes from one generation to the next; each year it serves more than 30,000 individuals and families in Suffolk and Nassau counties. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA’s original orphanage, the Temporary Home for Children, was founded in 1884. Louisa Lee Schuyler, great-granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, spearheaded the establishment of the orphanage. During this upcoming Women’s History Month, Family & Children’s Association will be honoring Louisa Lee Schuyler’s vision by joining forces with some of the most influential female philanthropists and business owners across Long Island with its inaugural Long Island Women in Philanthropy Breakfast & Fashion Show. FCA is extremely proud to represent a female majority workforce, including its management. All of its five divisions are led by women in Assistant Vice President roles and the organization as a whole is very excited about this new initiative; their goal is to bring together like-minded women in our local community. The event will be held on Thursday, March 31st at The Mansion at Oyster Bay in Woodbury from 9am-12pm. Each of FCA’s five divisions will be represented in the fashion show by client and volunteer models who will tell a story of the impact FCA has had on their lives and in the community. Those five divisions are:

•Addiction Prevention, Treatment & Recovery •Children’s Mental Health & Wellness •Prevention & Family Support •Residential Care •Senior & Adult Services Coquette Boutique, which has locations in Garden City, Manhasset and Rockville Centre, will be partnering with FCA as its fashion show sponsor. They will host a small pop-up shop at the end of the event and will donate a percentage of the proceeds back to FCA. Additionally, hair and makeup design will be exclusively provided by Studio Novelle of Carle Place.

Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in the Great Kindness Challenge from Jan. 24-28. Throughout the week of activities, students embraced the initiative and spread kindness in their school and beyond. The week began with a video and discussion on the meaning of kindness.

Students read kindness books with the classes. During recess, each student at Deauville Gardens East created a piece of a paper chain, illustrating what kindness means to them. Flu Season Is Underway In New York; How You Can Protect Residents Who Are Most Vulnerable

Flu season is officially here in New York, with the New York State Department of Health reporting ten consecutive weeks of widespread flu diagnoses. To help prevent the flu in people who are at high risk for severe complications, the American Lung Association and Empire BlueCross BlueShield Foundation, released a toolkit specifically for caregivers of adults 65 and over through their “Fend Off Flu” campaign. Influenza (flu) is a serious and highly contagious disease that can have severe health consequences for all, and especially for vulnerable adults 65 and older, and those with chronic health conditions. The new toolkit is a resource to educate caregivers including healthcare providers and personnel in long-term care settings about the flu and the importance of vaccination to protect adults 65 and older. “Nationally, 50-70% of flu hospitalizations were in patients over 65. Flu shots are especially important for healthcare workers and caregivers of vulnerable adults,” said David Ackman, M.D., Medicaid Medical Director from Empire BlueCross BlueShield. “Not only will getting a flu shot help reduce the chance of catching the illness, but it will also help reduce the severity if it’s contracted. Especially for people with underlying health conditions, the flu can turn into a serious, even deadly, illness.” During the 2019 – 2020 flu season, it is estimated the flu sent approximately 380,000 people to the hospital with related complications and caused an estimated 20,000 deaths in the United States, which is why getting vaccinated should be a priority. The flu vaccine is the best protection against

contracting and spreading the illness. “Especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, routine vaccination is more important than ever,” said Erica Masin, executive director for the American Lung Association in metro New York. “Flu vaccinations have been in use for more than 50 years, with hundreds of millions of Americans safely receiving them. It’s recommended that everyone over six months of age receive a flu vaccine, but they are especially important for the 3,026,000 people in New York with lung disease, as well as their family members and caregivers.” In addition to vaccination, the CDC recommends these everyday preventive actions. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Cover your cough and sneeze with a tissue or your elbow. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. The “Caregiver Flu Toolkit” is a comprehensive guide to educate caregivers of adults 65 and over about flu and the importance of vaccination to help protect them from contracting the flu. WHAT EVERY SELLER NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT RENOVATING THIS YEAR If you’re planning to sell this year, you’re probably thinking about what you’ll need to do to get your house ready to appeal to the most buyers. If more buyers are willing to tackle repairs on their own, it may be wise to let the future homeowners remodel the bathroom or the kitchen to make design decisions that are best for their specific taste and lifestyle. Depending on the structural condition of your house, your efforts may be better spent working on small cosmetic updates, like refreshing some paint and power washing the exterior to make sure the home stands out. Instead of over-investing in upgrades, the buyer may change anyway, work with a real estate agent to determine the key projects to tackle that will give you the greatest return on your investment.

3. Your Agent Will Help You Spotlight the Upgrades You’ve Made Over the past year, many people made a significant number of updates to their homes. The most recent State of Home Spending report finds: “Home improvement spending rose 25% year-over-year to $10,341. Homeowners who invested in home improvement did an average of 3.7 projects, up from 2.7 in 2020, . . .” With more homeowners taking on more projects in the past 12 months, there’s a good chance you’ve already made updates to your home that could appeal to buyers. If that’s the case, your real estate agent will find ways to highlight those upgrades in your listing. The same is true for any projects you invest in moving forward. No matter what, before you renovate, contact a local real estate agent for expert advice on what work needs to be done and how to make it as appealing as possible to future buyers.
