The Birthday Betta It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete

shrimp or a snail to keep me company, and maybe vacuum my bowl now and then. Those long hours spent waiting for my Human to return home each day are awfully boring. There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another. Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.) ‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. And to my Human family, thank you for the best first birthday a Betta could hope to have. Here’s to many more!

Celebrating 105

Theodora Tolle Tynebor was born in Brooklyn in 1911. At 19 years-old, she spent a year of study in Rome. When her mother was there to visit her, the two crossed into Germany

to attempt a visit with her father’s family. While witnessing a parade honoring Adolf Hitler they were told to “Macht Der Heil” (Salute Hitler). Teddy beams when she recalls her

mother saying “I don’t do that, I am an American.” Teddy attended St. Agnes Academic High School in College Point, NY, where she was taught by the Sisters of St. Dominic. She then attended Marymount College in Tarrytown, NY, after which she received a Masters degree from St. John’s University. She then pursued a career in the NYC Public School. Teddy has resided at Dominican Village since May 2006 and is best known for her funny jokes and warm personality. The Administration, Staff & Residents of Dominican Village are elated to be celebrating Teddy’s 105th birthday with her as she still brings a zest for life to the Dominican Village Community.

Community Services Expo With a goal of raising awareness of positive programs available for youth, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory hosted a Community Services Expo in Wyandanch on Tuesday, January 26th. The Presiding Officer was joined at the Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corp. by church and community leaders who met and collaborated with representatives from over 30 community organizations, government offices and nonprofit agencies with a goal to raise awareness of youth

services and programs available and ultimately stem violence in the area. Representatives from a wide array of organizations shared information with residents and each other about the vital youth services they offer. “The community expo was a great success,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “As the community comes together to tackle concerns of violence in the community it is important to have all stakeholders at the table.” Agencies in attendance included the Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, Community

Development Corp. of Long Island, Long Island Head Start, Wyandanch Community Resource Center, Wyandanch Family Life Center/Youth Center and Wyandanch Mothers for Change among numerous other local businesses and community organizations. “This event was much needed in our community,” said Phyllis Henry of Wyandanch Mothers for Change. “I was happy to see the huge turnout of community stakeholders who came out to share resources available to our youth.”

Leaders of Tomorrow As a first glance into the workforce, fifth-grade students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District participated in a full-day field trip to the Commerce Plaza in Levittown. It is a simulated business community that promotes understanding of the world of business and its economics while meeting New York State Learning Standards. Prior to the trip, students took part in a sixweek preparation cycle that introduced them to the Commerce Plaza Curriculum and basic principles of economics. Funded by a Capital One

grant, students traveled to the center for a unique activity-based experience. With the support of local businesses, Hofstra University and United Way of Long Island, students chose from a variety of industries ranging from banking, news media to public service. Upon arriving at the business center, each student assumed a specific role in the business community that allows them to apply life skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, effective communication and teamwork. In this work environment, students learned business operations, banking skills such as writing checks

and balancing checkbooks, applying for bank loans and completing job applications. While immersed in the business community, instructors facilitated and guided the students through their experiences, COMMUNITY SERVICES EXPO - Presiding Officer Gregory speaks to attendees of ensuring they successfully his Community Services Expo at the Wyandanch-Wheatley Heights Ambulance Corp. applied their knowledge on Tuesday, January 26th. and put their skills to practice. Inspired by the popular television show on the Spike network, members of the Love 4 All Club at Amityville’s Edmund W. Miles Middle School, under the advisement of Bernadette Kraljic, hosted a Lip Sync Battle of the Teachers on January 29th.

The well-attended event showcased the creative dance talents of more than 15 administrators and faculty members as they lip sang to classic and modern day songs including “I Will Survive” by Diana Ross, Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk,” and “Hello” by

Adele. Similar to the onair show, contestants dressed in character and used a variety of props while performing in front of an audience and panel of student-judges. In the end, social studies teacher Paul Duguay’s lip sync performance to the song “Sorry” by Justin Bieber won him the title of King of the Lip Sync Battle. The event raised more than $300, which the club will use to purchase T-shirts for National Day of Silence on April 15th, a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools.

Icy Water Rescue Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Town Clerk Carol Quirk, and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to honor three members of the community for their heroic acts that helped save a 12 year-old boy who fell into an icy Babylon canal. Seven year-old Finn Chatterton heard a screaming sound and

immediately alerted his father, Patrick. The two found the boy in the icy water, extended a shovel for him to grasp, and called the police. When Suffolk County First Precinct Officer Kristen Derkevics arrived, the three were able to pull the boy safely out of the water. Officer Derkevics, Patrick and Finn Chatterton were each presented with the Town of Babylon Heroism

Award – the highest honor bestowed to residents by the Town. Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey was also in attendance to present a proclamation honoring the three heroes, as well as recognition on behalf of Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. The officials commended the three for their brave actions and thanked them for their service to the Town.

Library Day Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory participated in “Take Your Child to the Library Day” on Saturday, February 6th, at the Copiague Memorial Public Library. “Take Your Child to the Library Day” began in 2012 as a grass-roots initiative. The idea gained popularity immediately, and librarians across America began planning special events,

programs, and displays. Today, it is a national event with hundreds of libraries participating by highlighting the services they provide and underscoring the importance of taking children to visit their public libraries. For the fifth straight year, Presiding Officer Gregory and other elected officials showed their support by participating as guest

readers, reading books to children in attendance. “I want to commend the Copiague Library for providing an opportunity for a fun, kid-friendly way for youngsters to grow and develop a lifelong love of reading,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Serving as a guest reader for the children is something that I look forward to every year. It was my pleasure.”
