Applications for the 10th annual Polish American Museum Founders Scholarship for the year 2017 are available upon request. The $500 Scholarship is offered to high school students of Polish heritage residing in Nassau and Suffolk county and a citizen of the United States. The student must be entering college in the Fall 2017. The Scholarship was established on the occasion of the museum’s 30th anniversary in honor of its deceased founders. Today, the museum continues to serve the community with new exhibits portraying the heroic efforts of Poles in the fight for freedom. Snow Days & Days Gone By By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.

I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

STICKING TO A CAUSE - On January 26th, members of the Copiague Middle School SADD club sold pieces of tape to raise funds for the Victoria Trachte Scholarship, which presents a scholarship to a graduating senior at Walter G. Classroom Learning grade students and two fifth-grade helpers. The goal, according to Lego Club adviser and Great Neck Road social worker Lissette Persico, is to get the students interested in STEM activities, while also learning how to follow directions, work together and use their problemsolving skills. The students are currently working on building their own cars out of Legos and testing their
effectiveness and speed on a ramp. Members use their imagination and trial and error to design their oneof-a-kind creations. “The goal is to take their learning to the next level so they will continue to engage in these types of activities as they progress through school,” Ms. Persico said. “The club teaches math and science skills, sorting and teamwork and also allows students to just use their own imagination.”

Securing a Spot Competing against 35 teams from Long Island, the Copiague Middle School robotics team earned a spot in the next round of competition during the First Lego League’s qualifying tournament at Mineola High School on January 28th. During the 2016-2017 Animal Allies Challenge, the Copiague Eagles robotics team, coached by Copiague Middle School technology teacher Stephen DiGiorgio, secured
one of eight spots in the championship tournament that will be held at Longwood High School on March 5th. Eagles team members Dylan Bedell, Arianna Tirino, Aidan Murphy, Quinn Fuchs, Ari Chervony, Eitan Chervony, Joshua Archer, Ariana Torres and Anthony Meneses have been working diligently during the past few months to prepare for the challenge. The challenge required the team to identify a problem and then research
and brainstorm possible solutions. The Copiague Eagles team focused their efforts on trying to eradicate the problem of people poaching animals. They invented an antipoaching drone that would be used to identify poachers. Taking their research a step further, they experimented with a prototype drone that they equipped with various sensors such as a thermal imaging camera and a GPS to more easily identify illegal poachers.

Tracy and her sister arrived at the funeral home early to see their father before the wake began. As they approached the casket, their first thought was, “This cannot be our dad.” Their father had always sported a mustache and, during his final hospitalization, his trademark whiskers were shaved off. The clean-shaven man in the casket was not the man they remembered. A quick trip to the costume shop across the street fixed their problem. The women giggled as they trimmed the fake mustache and placed it on their dad. Satisfied with their makeover, they settled into greeting their family and friends. The designated agent form in some instances is the most important piece of paperwork in the funeral process. This form is meant to be filled out before a person has passed away. It designates one person who will take care of the funeral arrangements above all others. Most people are of the belief that the health care proxy or the power of attorney is in place to take care of situations like this. This is a common misconception. The power of attorney and health care proxy are null and void when the deceased person has died. If there is no one who has been designated, then the person who has the right to make funeral arrangements would pass to the next of kin and if there are multiple children the rights are evenly distributed to all children. The designated agent form resolves this issue by identifying one person (kin or not) to take care of the arrangements. This is most helpful in situations concerning cremation, where a person dies locally and has multiple children who are living across the country. In arrangements such as cremation, signatures are needed from all children before we can start the process. Without the designated agent in place, if one person were to object to the cremation, the cremation cannot be done. However if there were a designated agent form in place, there is only one signature needed and all others are non-consequential to the arrangement process. Kindness Challenge Spreading kindness one act at a time, the students and staff at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District participated in the Great Kindness Challenge from January 23rd to 27th. To kick off the event, the students watched a video challenging them to complete as many kind acts as possible featuring words
of encouragement from administrators, teacher, custodians, secretaries, support staff and even their parents. Throughout the week, students were tasked with creating a culture of kindness within their building, community and at home. Using the checklist of 50 kind acts, they started the challenge
by decorating the hallways with messages of positivity. Virtual Field Trip Fifth-grade students from Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District took a virtual field trip across the U.S. when they participated in a Skype session with a park ranger from Yellowstone National
Park on January 25th. The students learned many interesting facts about the world’s first national park such as how it has more geysers than anywhere else in the world. It also has iconic and charismatic
fauna, plants that rely on fire to reproduce and many other secrets that make it a place of wonder. During the program, students discovered the interwoven nature of the park’s ecology, geology and human history.

Winter Break Programs Learning about nature through fun events is on the Winter Break menu at Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Educational & Cultural Center this month with two great programs. First there’s Morning of Nature: Music and Storytelling for kids ages 3 to 5 from February 20th and 21st, 10 to 11:30 a.m., with Johnny (“Mr. C”) Cuomo who will include singing, dancing, creating and moving to music followed by storytelling. This program is geared toward children of all abilities
with their caregivers as well as those children with special needs. Johnny is local teacher, musician and naturalist who specializes in programming for children in early childhood through young adulthood. Cost is $65 pp for all 3 days (Per day pricing: $35 pp) 15 person minimum; 20 person maximum. The second program offered is Teepee Ted of the Traveling Wilderness Museum for ages 6 to 9 from February 21st to 23rd, 10 a.m. to 12 noon and includes learning about how Indians lived
as settlers on Long Island, wilderness survival, how to use bow and arrows, making the tools and toys of native children and stringing jewelry. Recycling Collection Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island, in partnership with the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, is collecting used bicycles and sewing machines on Saturday, April 1st (rain or shine) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Ethical Society, 38 Old Country Road in Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the water tower). Items collected will be refurbished by the international project Pedals for Progress & Sewing Peace and sent to developing communities overseas. Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition or a working portable sewing machine is urged to donate the item. The program does not accept “bikes for parts,” disassembled bikes or tricycles. It costs $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle. This is the 14th bike/ sewing machine collection organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island and the second time it has been cosponsored by the Ethical Society. Huntington resident Kathy Williams-
Ging was the first to suggest a bicycle collection to the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island. She learned of Pedals for Progress from a friend in New Jersey. Kathy says:” I lived in Peru as a Peace Corps volunteer for two years in 1971 and 1972 without a vehicle. I learned first hand what it was like to depend on public transportation all of the time. Having a bicycle makes life easier in many ways: getting to work or school, going to the market or reaching the clinic.” Since beginning this collection, RPCV of LI has collected 1294 bicycles and 100 sewing machines. Floral Park’s Alison Pratt, who is the coordinator of the drive at the Ethical Society in Garden City, says the collection is an expression of the values of the Ethical Society to do what we can to help people to live their best lives. “Donating a used bike or idle sewing machine is an easy way to make a huge difference in the life of someone who doesn’t have the resources we do,” she says. Pedals for Progress collects bicycles and sewing machines annually and transfers this material wealth to those more needy. To date, more than 149,000 bicycles and 3,500 sewing machines have been shipped to developing countries in Latin America, Africa and
Eastern Europe. In these countries the bikes are reconditioned by partner agencies and distributed at low cost to poor working adults. These bikes provide reliable transportation for commuting to work, transporting product to market and accessing health care and other services. Sewing machine shipments help initiate educational programs and generate income opportunities that may otherwise remain out of reach for many people. Steady employment for adults is vital to the development and success of struggling communities.
