An Ode to Driving on LI By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow ﬂy off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Stay tuned next week as Buddy the Betta celebrates his much-anticipated 1st Birthday in the bowl and offers his take on this thing called “Valentine’s” Day.

Two students were given an egg to hold, one egg in a plastic bag and the other secured in a special “egg helmet.” The students simultaneously dropped the eggs. While the egg in the plastic bag was broken to pieces, the egg in the helmet was safe and unharmed. With assistance from Stony Brook nursing students, kindergartners dressed in a hairnet, facemask and rubber glove, treated their “injured” stuff animals and dolls. The kindergartners completed a form that identiﬁed the toys’ name, injury and how many hugs the toy needed to feel better. Using bandages and medical wrap, students mended their toy’s injuries.

Copiague Kicks Off Copiague High School students attended this year’s kickoff event for the 2016 FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and hosted by Stony Brook University.

They gathered with more than 40 participating high schools on Saturday, January 9th, at Stony Brook University’s Jacob Javits Lecture Center for a presentation and simulcast broadcast from New Hampshire. After the presentation, each team received a kit of parts, which they will use along with other materials to

build a 120-pound robot in support of the program’s STRONGHOLD™ theme and challenge. The 51 teams set to participate in the competition have six weeks to construct the robot before the main event at Hofstra University on April 1st and 2nd.

Parenting in the Digital Age In an effort to help parents become more knowledgeable about the types of digital media their children are using, Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District recently hosted a parent workshop entitled, “Parenting in the Digital Age.” The purpose of the workshop was to identify dangers associated with Internet usage, indicate ways parents and

guardians can protect their children from these dangers and how children can protect themselves on the Internet. During the workshop, parents listened to individual presentations led by private investigator Jonathan Tisk, Principal Scott Bullis, Assistant Principal Rose Hutcherson and school guidance counselor Kimberly Balducci. Prior to the workshop, a school-wide survey was conducted that identiﬁed

the popular apps students at Park Avenue are using. To help familiarize parents with these apps, members of the Edmund W. Miles Middle School National Junior Honor Society explained how the apps are used and the dangers associated to them. “It is important for parents to be aware of what their kids are doing on the Internet and social media so they can monitor and keep them safe,” said Balducci.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined Town Councilman Tom Donnelly, Town Clerk Carol Quirk, and Town Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to induct the newest members of the Town of Babylon Youth Court. The Youth Court oath was administered by Supervisor Schaffer to the new inductees in attendance. The goal of the Youth Court is to reduce juvenile

delinquency through positive peer inﬂuence while allowing ﬁrst time offenders of violations or misdemeanors under the age of 16 to be heard by a jury made up of those close in age to them. The Town of Babylon Youth Court Class of 2016 consists of 22 members between the ages of 14 and 18 who have completed a multi-week program.
