New Officers Elected America’s Boating Club and the Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has elected its new officers for 2018 at their annual meeting on January 26th, 2018. John P. Pergola, AP, of Patchogue, has been elected as Squadron Commander. Elected to serve with Commander Pergola, is James M. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace, who will be Executive Officer; Kathy Matheson, P, of West Islip, as Administrative Officer; Marie Wallach, S, of Commack, as Educational Officer; James F. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace as Secretary; and Steve Potestio, P. of Holbrook, as Treasurer.

Each month, Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District recognizes a different character trait to highlight to its student body. Good judgment was the character trait for January and students in Ann Marie Byrnes’ third-grade class put on a short play for the school

to demonstrate good judgment on Jan. 26. Students spoke to their peers and performed short skits about following the rules, being responsible, using kind words and making good choices. They reinforced the idea that “the choice is yours” when it comes to good judgment. Deauville Garden East

guidance counselor Lysa Mullady works with students throughout the school on different character traits. Students are given “character counts” cards when they are caught doing a kind act and recognized during the monthly assemblies.

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. You can visit their website at www.HopeChildrensFund.org or contact Kevin Mann at KevinMannMail@gmail. com to learn more and view photos of these children. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days. Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. Lastly, Hope Children’s Fund will host their first gala at East Wind in Wading River on February 18th. “I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!

Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various ﬁelds of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we

see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added signiﬁcance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken

School District for 11 years, was nominated for the award for her use of technology in the classroom by Copiague School District’s director of technology Kelly Urraro. “My students are incredibly motivated by technology,” Palladino added. “They enjoy using the Smart Board, reading on EPIC and completing assignments in Google Classroom. They have also begun to work using our district’s ZSpaces, which provide them with realistic 3-D opportunities. I feel extremely fortunate to be teaching in 2018 with such a vast array of technology at my ﬁngertips. I have seen my teaching evolve as technology continues to advance. The school is participating in the worldwide movement – the Great Kindness Challenge – from January 22nd-26th. Students from all across the world are

joining together in the challenge. After watching a short video created by Susan E. Wiley Elementary School Assistant Principal Kristina Biamonte on how random acts of kindness can go a long way, students received a checklist of acts to complete throughout the week.

Staff members, students, their families and friends all participated in the weeklong challenge in hopes of inspiring others to be kind. The class that completes the most kind acts at the conclusion of the week will receive a kindness celebration.

Robotics Competition The robotics club at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District recently took part in its ﬁrst competition. The Amityville Robot Warriors competed against teams from across Long Island at the Lego First event at Great Neck Middle School in Nesconset on January 21st. The team ﬁnished ninth out of 15 teams. Amityville students spent approximately 20 hours working after school in the three weeks leading up to the competition. They had to build robots, then program them to complete missions without any human intervention.

Teams were given a problem facing communities and incorporate a solution into their designs. This year’s theme was hydro dynamics, and students had to explore the location, use, storage and movement of water. Amityville also received Judges Award, a special recognition given to a team that stand out for reasons other than the performance of its robot, such as perseverance, dedication and overcoming adversity. Team members included seventh-graders Wilnory Bouzy, Jose Hernandez, Hasslyn Hurtado, Luca Mazzilli and Kaya McCloud,

and eighth-graders Alex Hargrove, Randy Jerez and Jiovani Saint Jean, under the direction of their coach, technology teacher John Rodriguez. “The team worked extremely hard and dedicated themselves to the process,” Mr. Rodriguez said. “Each team member enjoyed the experience as the competition hall was buzzing with excitement and activity. There were teams that have been competing for years, and the Amityville Robot Warriors ﬁnished ahead of six more experienced teams. The community should be proud.”

Memory writes on every page of the calendar - here a birthday, there a holiday, further on a wedding date. The Virtual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program gives individuals who meet the income requirements the opportunity for free tax assistance, rather than seeking help from companies who regularly charge high rates for the same service with minimal returns. Evaluations are prepared off-site and returned to participants within a matter of days. According to Sanin, many individuals who qualify for VITA are also eligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which paid out tens of billions of dollars across the country last year. “We hope as many people as possible take advantage of this free program, and by doing so, save money up front on tax preparation services and check their eligibility

for the EITC.” Sanin said to a group of seniors who gathered at the center to learn more about the program. At the conclusion of the event, Sanin and Tommi-Grace Melito, the director of VITA, answered the seniors’ questions and handed out information about the program. Recently-elected Town Clerk Gerry Compitello helped coordinate the partnership between the Town of Babylon and HWCLI. She cites her past work with senior residents as the inspiration to provide them with a free,

comprehensive service like VITA. “We are so proud to be able to offer this service to our residents, especially our senior citizens,” said McSweeney. “Thank you to Rebecca and the rest of HWCLI for this great opportunity,” he added. History of the American Venice The American Venice was created by real estate developers Victor Pisani and Isaac Meister in 1926.
