Northwest Students Celebrate Winter’s Wonders With a chill in the outside air, families flocked to Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on Jan. 16 for the annual Winter Wonderland event on an evening that

certainly felt like winter. There was a strong turnout for the annual family fun night, as Northwest’s first, second and third graders were joined by parents as well as older and younger

siblings for winterthemed activities. Winter Wonderland started with a sing-along in the cafeteria followed by bingo. Instead of numbers, bingo cards were filled with winter words.

In classrooms, students participated in fun learning activities with assistance from members of the National Junior Honor Society at Edmund W. Miles Middle School.

They combined glue, saline solution, baking soda, blue food coloring and glitter to make slime. The experiment combined math and science as students measured

and mixed ingredients. Teachers read winterthemed books and children were able to personalize their own mugs to take home.

LESSONS IN HISTORY FROM DR. KING - Using technology, third graders at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District engaged in lessons about Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 16. Students in Ms. Spadaro’s class used the nearpod.com website to take an interactive, virtual tour of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and viewed virtual protests around the world. Students spoke about what they learned from his legacy. In Ms. Moosbrugger’s class, the third graders watched videos about Dr. King and created a trifold brochure outlining many of his beliefs. LEARNING CODING BASICS - Students in Maryanne Basso’s third grade class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District are learning the basics of programming using Ozobots. The small robots can identify lines, colors and codes on both digital surfaces, such as an iPad and physical surfaces, such as paper. The students worked collaboratively to build their paths on paper for the Ozobots to follow. They worked together to troubleshoot their programming and fix any errors in the path. Structural Designers Challenged the students were tasked with taking on the role of structural engineer. They learned that no structure is entirely immune to damage from earthquakes but it’s the job of the structural engineer to construct strong buildings that can survive the shaking. The second graders first completed drawings of the structures before constructing a building out of marshmallows

and toothpicks that could handle a simulated earthquake. After each student completed their respective building design, the structures were put to the test in a pan of gelatin. They placed the buildings in the gelatin and shook it vigorously back and forth to mimic the movements of the earthquake. If their structures fell, the students had the opportunity to redesign and retest them.

Copiague School District recognized and celebrated the accomplishments of its top 20 students in the Class of 2020 with a luncheon on Jan. 24 in the school’s cafeteria. Board of Education members, central administrators, invited faculty members and the students’ family members joined the top 20 students for the event. Each top 20 student had the opportunity to invite one special teacher from the district who had a positive influence on them. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta welcomed guests and thanked the family members for their support of the top 20 students. “I have a little advice for you as you move forward from here,” he said. “What matters foremost in life is that you be someone special; not

just do something special. To make a difference in the world, you have to be not only a great person but great in what you do and great in who you are. As you move from high school to college and continue your education, I encourage you to challenge yourself to become a great person. Get involved in all that life has to offer. Never be afraid to try something new. Always surround yourself with people who make you want to be a better person and bring out the best in you.” Mr. Agosta then offered a brief biography of each student, noting their accomplishments, awards and future goals and endeavors for college and their career. Remember when you were younger and in school and the teacher made you answer the questions?

Who? What? Where? When? How? And WHY?

When someone we love discovers they have cancer, dies suddenly, or is killed in an auto accident, we never really get the answer to the question WHY? Of course, we can answer the question Who? Our mother, father, spouse, sibling, child, relative or friend. What? Death or terminal illness that will lead to death. When? Is answered by a date and time. How? Is answered by the medical examiner or doctor telling us the heart, brain or lungs stopped functioning. Buy Why? Why now? Why not me? WHY? WHY? WHY? The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! What to expect in a 10-week curriculum: Each 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection and contribution.

TESTING LIMITS OF FORCE - Third graders in Jeannie Mullins’ class at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned just how much force it takes to make a watermelon explode during a hands-on science experiment on Jan. 16. The students began the lesson on forces using rubber bands around their hands to feel the push and pull of force. Using a watermelon, the students placed rubber bands around the center and made a prediction about how many rubber bands it would take to make the watermelon explode. Working in pairs with groups of 10 rubber bands, the students – wearing their goggles – learned the answer to their experiment: 200 rubber bands equals one exploding watermelon. Inspiration can take many forms. But for Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School junior Kiran Ahmad, inspiration came from a combination of a book and a teacher who taught her a deeper love for reading. Admittedly, Ahmad said English isn’t one of her favorite subjects, nor does she have an affinity for reading. That was until she was placed in Mr. Miles’ English class this year. The class recently read J.D. Salinger’s “Catcher in the Rye” and somehow, she just made a connection. “Mr. Miles is very enthusiastic about the book, which kind

of made me enthusiastic about reading it,” she said. “And when we started to analyze the book, it really got me thinking about some of the characters.” It got Ahmad thinking so much so that she decided to travel to Princeton University’s library, on her own, to read some of Salinger’s unpublished works, most notably:” The Ocean Full of Bowling Balls,” the prequel to “Catcher in the Rye.” The short story explains why the book’s main character is the way he is, and since the story won’t be published until 2060, Ahmad wanted to share

what she learned with her teacher. “I started writing an email full of all the details to Mr. Miles immediately after I left the library,” she said. “I wanted to retain everything I could about the story.” The purpose of her journey to Princeton was to share her knowledge with the teacher who inspired her. “Mr. Miles is an inspiration and he always tells me that I inspire him,” she said. “I never even liked to read and he made me fall in love with books. And when he replied to my email about my trip, it just made my day.”
