Copiague School District’s Board of Education recognized 27 students from the district’s six schools during a special ceremony held at Copiague Middle School on January 22nd. The student recognition awards are presented twice a year to students for their noteworthy accomplishments. Sweet Treats Members of the Copiague Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park on January 19th. The Copiague students prepped and baked a
few dozen brownies and cookies for the families staying in the house. The students toured facilities and learned how the Ronald McDonald facility helps families whose children are being cared for at Cohen’s Children’s
Medical Center. National Junior Honor Society advisers Paul Harvey and Francesca Walker, along with Copiague Middle School teacher Karen Kazlauskas, led the trip.
World Heritage International Student Exchange Program is seeking representatives to work with volunteer host families and international exchange students in your community. World Heritage provides academic year and semester exchange programs in the United States for high school students from around the world. Students are 15 to 18 years of age, have passed a series of academic and character requirements and are awaiting an opportunity to embark on their American adventure. World Heritage representatives have the opportunity to support American high school students through this transformative year abroad. tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. “Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

Helping to guide students in their future goals, Copiague School District held a College and Career Day on January 12th. Administrators and staff dressed in attire featuring their alma maters to show the many different college options. At the district’s elementary schools, students dressed in their aspirational professional career paths. Future doctors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, artists and even astronauts filled the hallways and classrooms. Students
wrote about why they want to choose their career paths and shared their choices with classmates. At Great Neck Road Elementary School, fourth-graders listened to college students who spoke about their experiences. Secondgrade students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School became geologists for the day, mining for rocks and minerals and learning about their properties. Teachers spoke to Copiague Middle School students about their college experiences and students took surveys about
potential career paths based on their interests. Students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School listened to Copiague alumni speak about college living, the application process and navigating their way through the first year away from home. In addition, staff members participated in a Dollars for Denim Day, donating the money raised to the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Scholarship Fund sponsored by the Copiague COLLEGE & CAREER DAY - Copiague School District held a College and Career Teachers Association. Day on January 12th, giving secondary students the opportunity to explore different career paths and learn about experiences firsthand from Copiague alumni and staff. A Winter Twist More than 100 students, along with family members, came out to the Winter Wonderland family learning night at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on January 18th. Children participated in literacy, math, science and art activities. The program began with a group singalong before students
went into classrooms to work on various projects. They made snowman thermometer crafts and ornaments filled with fake snow, with help from volunteers from the National Junior Honor Society at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Teachers read aloud winter-themed books and led snowman math games on the Smart Board.
Each student was able to take home a goodie bag and a free book, in addition to their crafts. Parents left with educational resources so they could do reading and math activities with their children at home. The evening was coordinated by the Winter Wonderland committee led by librarian Christine Bloom, social worker Debra Lee and art teacher Lydia Robinson.

Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.” And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form. Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time. To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once
nostalgic and slightly weary of them. As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor. “Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?” We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!” As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures. As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to
capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling. Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed. “Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???” Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement. “That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.” Beauty. The designated agent form is one of the most important pieces of paperwork in the funeral process. This form is filled out before the deceased has passed away, designating one person to take care of the funreal arrangements. Most people believe that documents such as health care proxy or power of attorney take care of these measures and give the named person power to make funeral arrangements. This is a common misconception. These documents are null and void when the deceased person has passed on. The right of funeral arrangements would then pass to the closest next of kin, and in the case of multiple children it gets evenly distributed. The designated agent form resolves this issue by signifying one person (kin or not) to take care of the arrangements. This is most helpful in situations with cremation, where a person passes away having multiple children spread across the country. In cremation, signatures are needed from all children in order to have the process completed. If one person objects, cremation cannot be done. With the designated agent form, only one signature is needed from the designated person. This makes the arrangement process go much smoother. Senior Jada Roberts said the breakout activity made her feel like a part of a television crime show, and it has her considering a career in forensics. Classmate Argelio Reyes said it brought the classroom lessons to life, such as when he had to take fingerprints. “It was interesting to find all of the clues,” said junior Zainab Mujeeb. “I felt like a real forensic scientist.”

Bringing Kindness Students teaching students was the basis of a character education lesson that recently took place at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. A group of about 30 ninth-graders from Edmund W. Miles Middle School made the short journey to Northwest on January 12th. They split into teams and visited third-grade classrooms to present their Positive Interactions program. The middle school students emphasized friendship,
integrity, kindness and respect to their younger peers. The presentation included videos on bullying and cyberbullying. The ninth-graders also led small-group discussions in which they presented various scenarios to the third-graders, and talked about how to handle each situation. The scenarios were circumstances that could happen inside or outside of school, and included topics such as how to deal with being teased, how to handle
untrue rumors and how to stick up for friends. The program was organized by ninth-grade social studies teacher Jack Zider and third-grade teacher Jennifer FlyntzZider. Student facilitators were chosen from the National Junior Honor Society and from teacher recommendations. Ms. Flyntz-Zider said the hope is that the message will stay in the hearts and minds of the students as they get older so that they “treat each other the right way.”
