The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $10,000 grant from The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for the Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) Student Assistance Program. Funding for the program will help to support the ongoing operation of this evidence based-program designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. This prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. “We are so grateful to The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for supporting this important program. For the first time, Walter G. O’Connell High School in the Copiague Public School District hosted a Copiague’s Got Talent talent show where students and teachers performed their unique talents in front of peers, friends, family and members of the community. The high school student council and its coadvisers, Cheryl Feldman and Jean Ann Kohn, were instrumental in orchestrating the newly formatted talent show.

Modeled after the popular television show, “America’s Got Talent,” each act received a “gold ticket” in auditions to secure a spot in the performance. The two-part talent show consisted of more than sixteen acts with seven judges critiquing performers to determine the winners of the inaugural show. Fifty-five student performers and stage crew along with thirty faculty and staff members brought the production to life with

spotlights, dance routines, musical performances and more. The show concluded with the judges’ final results presented by student council president Mariahelena Ruiz. “This type of event provides students with leadership and community service opportunities,” Kohn said. “It’s a chance to come together as a community to showcase the talents of the high school in a family friendly way.”

Holbrook as Secretary; Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook as Treasurer; and Jimmy Milton, AP, of Islip Terrace as Asst. Educational officer. The Change of Watch Meeting, installing these officers, will be on Friday, February 27th, at the RusyBohm American Legion Post, Nassau Avenue, Islip, beginning at 8 p.m. Commander-elect Mora is a Squadron Advanced Pilot, of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Administrative Officer over the past year. Learning About Disability In an effort to raise awareness about people living with disabilities, students at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague Public School District participated in a Disabilities Awareness Program on January 13th and 14th. The Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO) provided students

in kindergarten through third-grade with the opportunity to meet people who live with blindness, deafness and other developmental challenges. Through the use of interactive activities, students rotated to seven different stations where they experienced real world tasks people living with disabilities encounter. During a 40-minute

period, students were educated on physical and developmental disabilities, assistive technology, guide dogs and therapy dogs. “The hope is that children will understand that although we are different in some ways we are the same in the sense of our needs and what we need to do in society,” said Danielle Grandin, special education teacher.

Community Service Continued From 22 members from both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses began their winter break with a visit to a Habitat for Humanity site in Breezy Point, a neighborhood in Queens, New York that suffered significant damage due to Superstorm Sandy in

2012. The group was able to rebuild a porch railing for an elderly woman and paint basement walls to renovate a home. The following day, the group continued to work in Breezy Point, where they painted and spackled walls for homes that were damaged in the storm. The third day of work

brought the group to the St. John’s Bread & Life Soup Kitchen in Bedford-Stuyvesant, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. There, they joined a team of volunteers to help serve more than 1,000 plates of breakfast and lunch to the hungry. In addition, they were able to fulfill

the pantry requests of approximately 125 people, wash dishes and prepare food for mobile meals unit. “For me the most powerful thing was to be able to help people still rebuilding after Superstorm Sandy,” said Angela Vetere ’18, freshman at the Long

Island Campus of SJC. “Finding out two years later that people are still rebuilding was a humbling moment, but seeing that Habitat for Humanity of Westchester County is still dedicated to getting people back in their homes made me proud to be working with this organization.”
