During the visit, professionals shared information about their career and answered students’ questions. To educate them on the types of responsibilities they will face at the college level, students were instructed to create

In addition, Copiague alumni visited high school students to share their experiences in college and gave advice on visiting and applying to colleges. To show unity and school spirit, teachers in each department at the high school decorated a bulletin board to represent the college and career readiness theme. To commemorate the celebration, each student in grades K-12 received a string backpack with the district’s College and Career logo, which reads, “Who will be college/ career ready, I will!”

Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity

to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

enough to drive my fins into a frenzy. Add to that the hazards of commuting, and it’s no wonder humans have so much anxiety at the first forecast of a flake. Me, I have trouble navigating around my plant when the water gets a little cloudy. I have the frayed fins to prove it. I understand this may be only the beginning of the winter weather. So far, not so bad. I’m just keeping my fins crossed that there are no major storms headed this way for February 16th – my very first betta birthday in my human’s home. I expect a big turnout for my party… and presents… and extra flakes of course… Just not of the snow variety.

At the January 13th meeting of the Board of Education, the Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education supported a resolution to hold a public vote on Tuesday, March 8th to improve and expand district facilities through a bond. The process began in early 2014 with a demographic, enrollment and facilities study by Western Suffolk BOCES and the district’s architect. Studies showed that student enrollment in the district is projected to increase over the next 10 years. While other districts on Long Island are seeing a decrease in enrollment, Amityville is one of the few where enrollment is projected to increase. “This presents an enormous challenge to our district,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary Kelly.

just one part of improving our district for the children of Amityville.” To study the district’s facility needs, the district formed a community committee, comprised of community residents and administrators. The committee met throughout the summer and fall and ultimately presented its recommendations to the Board of Education in mid-November. The proposed bond includes a number of infrastructural improvements to buildings throughout the district that have met or exceeded their life span, such as HVAC systems, masonry and windows. The plan also calls for building expansions at both Northwest Elementary School and Amityville High School to accommodate current and future enrollment needs. “The proposal would allow us to restructure the grade levels within our schools and convert Northeast Elementary School to a full-day prekindergarten center for the community,” said Dr. Kelly. “It would also allow us to move the ninth grade back to Amityville High School, a huge benefit to students and the entire Amityville community.” The total cost of the bond proposition is approximately $69.9 million; however, the district would receive 55.7 percent of the project’s total cost through New York State building aid. The Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youths & Adults (HKNC) jump-started its annual Helen’s Run/Walk this week with a kick-off breakfast at its Sands Point headquarters. Dozens and dozens of community residents and participants from previous years gathered to brainstorm and collect registration materials for this year’s Helen’s Run/ Walk, which will take place on Sunday, April 17th, at the Sands Point Preserve. Mikaiya Moore, a senior at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School and captain of the girls’ varsity basketball team, joined an elite group of seven female athletes who have scored 1,000 points or more while on the Copiague girls’ varsity basketball team. During a dueling game against West Babylon on December 12th, Moore scored her 1,000-point basket. Beginning her basketball career on the varsity team in eighth-grade and now as a captain, Moore has been a valued player and leader

for her teammates. As a result to an unfortunate ACL injury, Moore missed one and a half basketball seasons. Over the span of the three athletic seasons she played, Moore has scored 1,182 points with that number continuing to grow. Her overall points put her in sixth out of the seven other female athletes who completed this feat. In addition to her exceptional athletic skills, Moore is a dedicated student in the classroom, taking challenging Advanced Placement courses with an overall 85 average.

“I am honored to coach such a hard working and dynamic young lady,” said Copiague girls’ varsity basketball coach Carole Olsen. “Mikaiya is a great stretch-four who can drive and finish at the rim. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground.
