for volleyball matches on January 12th. The games were a fundraising effort for the Parent Teacher Associations and fifthgrade committees at both schools. Students

from Susan E. Wiley and Deauville Gardens East came out to support and cheer on their teachers. In all, the fundraising efforts yielded close to $300 for each school.

Being college and career ready was top of mind for students in the Copiague School District as the district celebrated College and Career Day on January 13th. From the elementary schools all the way up to the high school, faculty and administrators proudly dressed in their alma mater. Students at Great Neck Road Elementary School opted to dress as their future career choice with a slew of doctors, veterinarians, police officers and lawyers

throughout the building. One elementary class set up its room as a bakery for the day. Dressed as aspiring chefs, the students baked and sold cupcakes and cookies to learn about business model. Students at Copiague Middle School learned about the many opportunities offered during the college years, such as traveling abroad and meeting new people. Teachers shared their college experience and spoke about the endless career choices that college

can offer. Military personnel, local businesspeople and Copiague alumni visited Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School to offer insight and information about the college experience. Many alumni spoke about budgeting, dorm life, financial aid and navigating through the first year both academically and socially. Throughout the district, students sported their blue and white “College and Career Day” bracelets to support the event.

I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after

“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to

the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

The Ever Present Absence

When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of every day. We mourn. We cry. We learn to cope with the loss; of their physical presence, their encouraging words, their love and support. During the first year we are without our parent, spouse, sibling or child, we are aware of their absence every day. But, during special events such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc., we are intensely aware of their absence to the point the entire event can be saddened because of our grief. But, as time goes on, we learn to cope with and accept our loss. However, the absence of our loved one remains with us forever. It may be five years or fifty years after our loved one has left us, but we are still conscious of their absence from our lives and we acknowledge their absence in so many different ways; a silent prayer, a private thought or a tear we blame on allergies or the wind. But as we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, our sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here”, acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives. Not despairing, for we hope to meet again... just in that moment, realizing their ever present absence from our lives. 320507N0125

We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are

still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not

being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.

Fourth-graders in Nicole Antz’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District spent the first week of January conducting science experiments related to how energy works.

Using the district’s new hands-on science kits, the students worked on a lesson exploring potential vs. kinetic energy using inclined planes (ramps) and marbles. They learned that the marbles at rest contain potential energy. When

they are released at the top of the ramp, energy turns from potential to kinetic or energy in motion. After several experiments, the students started making connections in relation to potential and kinetic energy.
