Park Avenue AP The Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education appointed Melissa Wiederhold as assistant principal of Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School, which serves the district’s fourth- through sixth-grade students, effective January 11th. Ms. Wiederhold, of Wantagh, joined the district in December 2015 as Park Avenue’s instructional coach. In that capacity, she has helped develop the building’s master schedule, supported the

implementation of Teacher’s College Reading and Writing workshops, provided professional development opportunities for teachers, and helped organize events to encourage family and community participation. Ms. Wiederhold has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and psychology from Hofstra University, a master’s degree in literacy education from Touro College and certificate of advanced studies in building and district leadership from the College of Saint Rose. “Ms. Wiederhold knows our students, our faculty and our staff very well,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary T. To learn about the mathematical concept of scale, sixth-graders at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District built models of famous landmarks from all over the world. The projects were done as part of the measurement unit. Students worked in groups and used cardboard from cereal and tissue boxes to create their replicas of landmarks, which included the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Empire State Building, Canton Tower and Burj Khalifa. They based their models off of the actual height of the buildings. Oldest Tree The oldest living tree, 4,700-year-old “Methuselah” grows in White Mountains, Calif.

Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County. “Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.” The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.” As he rolled his overﬂowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged. “It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel. I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game. I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks. I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a ﬂight of stairs into my apartment. I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands. Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

The Ever Present Absence

When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of everyday. We mourn. We cry. We learn to cope with loss; of their physical presence, their encouraging words, their love and support. During the first year we are without our parent, spouse, sibling or child, we are aware of their absence every day. But, during special events such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc. we are intensely aware of their absence to the point the entire event can be saddened because of our grief. But, as time goes on we learn to cope with and accept our loss. However, the absence of our loved one remains with us forever. It may be five years or fifty years after our loved one has left us, but we are still conscious of their absence from our lives and we acknowledge their absence in so many different ways; a silent prayer, a private thought or a tear we blame on allergies or the wind. But as we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, or sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here,” acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives, not despairing, for we hope to meet again, just in that moment realizing their ever present absence from our lives. 337650N0124

Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. Neighbor Pets’ Place

Helping to guide students in their future goals, Copiague School District held a College and Career Day on January 12th. Administrators and staff dressed in attire featuring their alma maters to show the many different college options. At the district’s elementary schools, students dressed in their aspirational professional career paths. Future doctors, lawyers, police officers, firefighters, artists and even astronauts filled the hallways and classrooms. Students wrote about why they want to choose their career paths and shared their choices with classmates. At Great Neck Road Elementary School, fourth-graders listened to college students who spoke about their experiences. Secondgrade students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School became geologists for the day, mining for rocks and minerals and learning about their properties. Teachers spoke to Copiague Middle School students about their college experiences and students took surveys about potential career paths based on their interests. Students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School listened to Copiague alumni speak about college living, the application process and navigating their way through the first year away from home. In addition, staff members participated in a Dollars for Denim Day, donating the money raised to the Walter G. “Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Exploring Health Care Students who participated in a summer medical program were recognized at the Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education meeting on January 12th. Ten Amityville Memorial High School students attended the two-week Health Careers Academic and Readiness Excellence program through the School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. HCARE is designed to give high school students an introduction to various professions in the health

care field. HCARE administrator, Erik Flynn, attended the board meeting to present certificates and white coats to the participants. He then led the students in the white coat oath. Jason McGowan, adviser of the high school’s Warrior Awareness Club, commonly known as the WAC PAC, gave a presentation on Awareness Weekend. The overnight activity, attended by about 100 high school students plus a dozen chaperones, included guest speakers and bonding activities.

Several participants shared their experiences as well. Dr. Lois Etzel, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and Carole Polney, the assistant superintendent for technology and administrative services, presented data from the New York State Education Department’s report card. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly updated the board on several academic and athletic accomplishments.

Inspiring Young Writers When children work on writing assignments at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, they follow the same process used by authors. They received some inspiration when popular children’s author and illustrator Chris Soentpiet visited the school on January 11th. During presentations for each grade, Soentpiet discussed how he comes up with ideas for stories

and how he works with other authors to create illustrations for their books. He explained that he uses real children as models for his book characters, and drew some quick sketches based on Northwest students. He ended with a simple message to students: “Follow your dreams and believe in yourselves.” The young writers, who are taught to think of themselves as authors during Teacher’s College

Writing Workshop activities, then were able to pick his brain during question and answer sessions. “This gives students something to aspire to,” said Lorie Beard, the instructional coach at Northwest, who coordinated the author visit. “Mr. Soentpiet’s visit brings the writing process to life from someone who does it for a living.”
