Let’s Take In Some Culture This Weekend “Give every day the chance to become the most beautiful day of your life.” - Unknown When was the last time you took in a nice play, or a concert in an intimate venue? Perhaps an art gallery showing, featuring some local up and coming artists, or a museum exhibit? I don’t know about you, but culture really feeds my soul. A weekend spent entrenched in the arts or science or history can feel akin to a mini-vacation, and makes me feel connected to my humanity and the world around me. Come to think of it, a nourishing hobby can do the same; whether it is volunteering at your local animal shelter, jewelry making, horseback riding (my personal favorite) or rockclimbing. It could be just about anything. I can’t speak for everyone, but for those of us who are often entrenched in the routine of grocery shopping, play dates, errands and preparing for the
week ahead, we can sometimes lose sight of the opportunity that each weekend holds for us. As I edit the Coming Events Around Town calendar each week for the newspaper, I see so many interesting and culturally enriching events taking place throughout Long Island. I will admit, I have been guilty of thinking, “Note to self. You have to go check this out,” and then I’ll get sidetracked and forget to go. I’ll let myself get so swept up in life that the days will get away from me. It happens to the best of us. But the twenty-four hours that we are granted each day are filled with endless promise, and we owe it to ourselves to make the most of them whenever possible. When it comes to squeezing every ounce of opportunity out of each weekday in terms of career, I’m batting a thousand. But I’ve been slacking a bit on squeezing every ounce of life and enjoyment out of the 48 hours between Friday night and Sunday night. Let’s make this a collective challenge! Each weekend, let’s
comb through What’s Happening Around Town in South Bay’s Neighbor as well as other local Long Island newspapers. Look at everything the area has to offer, from movie screenings and crafting, to classes, lectures and music events. Next time something catches your eye, stop in your tracks, make plans and get tickets, or simply make a reservation. Incidentally, you would be surprised at the amount of free activities around town. Feeling like a homebody this winter? Invite a bunch of friends over for a Saturday night potluck dinner and classic movie screening. Share laughs, memories and great food. Then take in some classic films in your living room. Maybe even break out a board game or two. Do something that will have you skipping back to work or school, or the Monday routine, with newfound vigor. I’m holding myself to this one too. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Brides who want to tone up can speak with a fitness instructor at a nearby gym to learn various ways to firm their arms, chests and backs in advance of their wedding days.

ouples are increasingly bucking long-established trends to make weddings uniquely their own. One of today’s more popular tradition-busting trends is not adhering to gender roles when couples select friends and family members for their wedding parties.
According to The Daily Mail, over the past year, weddings across Australia and other areas of the world have seen a rise in “groomswomen” and “bridesmen.” These new modern roles are blurring the lines of wedding traditions past.
Until recently, the vast majority of wedding couples selected members of the same sex to fill the roles needed for the ceremony and reception.
Couples have often said that choosing whomever they desire to stand beside them during their wedding is more authentic than separating people simply because of gender.

Another possible snag is with bachelorette parties and bachelor parties. A solution to this dilemma may be to simply organize a getaway weekend for the entire bridal
party, and not separate parties for each side. Couples are increasingly deviating from tradition for their weddings by looking beyond gender when picking wedding party members. In a recent story on TheKnot, written by Carrie Anton, wedding planner Alex Chalk stated that with abandoning traditional gender roles in wedding parties, brides or grooms “get to be surrounded by the ones you want by your side,” regardless of gender. Supposing the brides closest friend and confidante happens to be male, or the groom’s closest pal just happens to be female? It’s becoming more and more accepted to bestow bridal party designations as the bride and groom so desire. The article goes on to state that these modern bridal party roles obviously require new name designations, hence bridesman or groomsmaid. But let’s not forget the anticipated special designations of bride’s best man or groom of honor. It’s your special day to create a celebration that fits your preferences, lifestyle and to celebrate with those nearest and dearest to you. If there were ever a time to make your own rules, this is it!

Tying the knot can be an expensive endeavor. According to The Knot 2017 Real Weddings Study, which surveyed nearly 13,000 brides and grooms in the United States, the average cost of a wedding was more than $33,000. Cut back on entertainment
Customizing experiences for guests is a major reason why today’s couples are spending so much more per guest than in generations past. Couples may want to give their guests unique experiences, but should not stretch their budgets or go into debt to do so. Don’t underestimate the basics: great music and dancing, and delicious food.
Tie the knot in winter
Summer and fall were the most popular wedding seasons of the last two years, and that does not figure to change anytime soon. Couples can take advantage of those trends by getting married in winter, a slow season for wedding venues and vendors, who might be more flexible with their prices. The most popular months to tie the knot were September, June and October, so couples who don’t want to wed in winter but want to avoid paying top prices should avoid those three months.

As we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, our sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here”, acknowledging their ever present absence from our lives-not despairing, for we hope to meet again, just in the moment realizing their ever present absence from our lives.

A love of language brought Letizia Cazzaniga nearly 4,000 miles from Milan, Italy to Amityville Memorial High School. The senior said she is thoroughly enjoying her year as a foreign exchange student and her immersion in American culture. Growing up in Italy with a mother from Lebanon, she learned to speak both Italian and Arabic as a child. Since then, her linguistic interests have grown and Letizia is now fluent in five languages including English, French and Spanish, along with a little Portuguese. “I really like languages,” she said. “Being here and studying here for a year is good for my skills.” Several of her courses foster her language development including dystopian literature, journalism, college French and Advanced Placement Spanish. She is taking algebra, plays the violin
for the orchestra and sings in the chorus. Letizia was excited to participate in the winter concerts. She noted that schools in Italy typically do not have instrumental music instruction. She said two differences about going to high school in the United States are the earlier start time and changing classes. There is also a greater emphasis on critical thinking while in Italy the focus is learning material and studying for tests. When she returns home, she will have one more year of high school remaining. Letizia hopes to attend college in Paris or the Netherlands and said possible majors include architecture or interior design. Her host family in Amityville and the students at the high school have been very welcoming, she said. Letizia spent much of her holiday break visiting sights in New York City

Amityville Memorial High School welcomed 39 students from East Islip High School, who made the 15-mile journey west on Jan. 7 to take part in the Cultural Exchange program. East Islip students were warmly greeted by their peers from Amityville shortly after 7 a.m. The groups gathered in the auditorium for breakfast, light conversation and icebreaker activities to explore common interests. Each East Islip student then attended classes with his or her Amityville buddy from the Warrior Awareness Club before everyone reconvened at the end of the day for lunch. “I just love the new connections that are made,” said Jason McGowan, advisor of the Warrior Awareness Club and coordinator of the Cultural Exchange program. “It doesn’t end today. Testing Their Strength Fifth-graders at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District were challenged to be architects and engineers during a recent library class.
After reading the book “Twenty-One Elephants and Still Standing,” which tells the story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge, the students were tasked with creating their
own bridges. Working in small groups, the builders used 42 Citi Blocks to create their own bridge, strong enough to hold a water bottle and with room to pass below the bridge.
