An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Principal Named The Amityville Union Free School District has named Kathleen Hyland as the new principal of Northwest Elementary School, which serves the district’s first-, secondand third-grade students. She has been the assistant principal since August. Ms. Hyland, of Bay Shore, has been with the district since 2004, serving as a math and science teacher at Edmund W. Miles Middle School and Park Avenue Elementary School. She has held several leadership positions including a site coordinator for the 21st Century BEST Program at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School and a site coordinator for the Summer Enrichment Academy at Northwest. She has also served as a gradelevel subject leader and mentor for other teachers. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Hofstra University, and a master’s degree and advanced certificate

So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we

realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run. Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently. Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who

either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter. Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

But, also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Christmas joy to all year round. Because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile!

National Wear Red Day The American Heart Association is uniting with companies, community organizations, families and friends to “Go Red” and “Glow Red” on Friday, February 3rd to spread the message that heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined.
