BACCA High School Art Show exhibition will be open from Friday, January 26th, 2018 through Friday, February 9th and shows the work of students from grades 9 to 12. Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Artist reception will be held on Saturday, February 3rd from noon to 2 p.m. and is open to the public. The second show is the Children’s Art Exhibit of work from grades K-8. This exhibit is open for viewing on Wednesday, February 14th, 2018 through Saturday, March 3rd. Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but will be closed on Monday, February 19th. The Artist reception for the Children’s Show will be held on Saturday, March 3rd from noon to 2 p.m. and is open to the public. The Town of Babylon History Museum at Old

Town Hall will also be open during these shows. Come and explore the history of the Town of Babylon, including its formation, the Town Seal, and the building of Old Town Hall. There is also a special exhibit room with interactive media displays. Currently on display is the Veterans exhibit, “Our Veterans Brave and Noble,” and on the lower level are the historic jail cells that are not to be missed! Exhibit hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is a notfor-profit arts organization bringing theater, music, fine arts and cultural events to the residents of the Town of Babylon. realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

Students Mean Business Seven students from Amityville Memorial High School’s chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of America participated in the Suffolk County Regional Competition on January 3rd at Suffolk County Community College, with four advancing to the state championship. Ana Candia in the Human Resource Management Decision Making category, Eddie Marrero and John Quinone

in the Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making category, and Gemma Rojas in Apparel and Accessories Marketing will compete against students from across New York State in Rochester from March 7th-9th. Other participants from Amityville included Kimone Green in the Job Interview category, Deonte Palmer in Sports and Entertainment Marketing, and Laurie Herard in Principals of

Business Management and Administration. DECA is a nationwide, business-themed organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. This is the third year of the chapter at Amityville Memorial High School, which is advised by business teacher Jennifer Schweigert.

Love of Tech Tech-savvy students are getting the opportunity to try their hand at coding using different computer languages thanks to Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s Coding Club. With attendance ranging from 20-25 students, the Coding Club meets every Tuesday throughout the school year under the advisement of business

teacher Diana LaSpina. Members spend the first half of the meeting working together on a project and break away for their free time during the second half. They have participated in Hour of Code and are currently learning JavaScript in the Khan Academy. Students use resources such as Coding Wizards, Code.org

and Dojo to build their coding knowledge. “The Coding Club gives students an opportunity to fuel their love of technology and coding outside of the classroom,” LaSpina said. Each time they complete a new skill, they get a badge and certificate to show their coding progression.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people however suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider, also orphaned or troubled children who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year. Please don’t get me wrong, I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people. But, I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome. And this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February. So if you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you; but also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Chrismas Joy to all year round, because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile! 337376N0117
