FOURTH GRADE PROJECTS INSPIRED BY AUTHOR’S ARTWORK During their reader’s workshop, the students in Ms. Spizuco’s fourth grade class at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District studied different memoirs. In particular, the students learned about author Lois Ehlert and the inspiration for her artwork and illustrations in her books. Ehlert only uses scraps and items she can find around the house or outdoors and creates her art using only these scraps. Additionally, the center is expanding its educational programs to reach schools not only on Long Island but in Florida and Puerto Rico, expanding knowledge of marine ecosystems and inspiring young people to

participate in conservation efforts. “The New York Marine Rescue Center is protecting Long Island’s marine life, while also educating and empowering children and adults to take steps to conserve our oceans,” said Marc Perez, President, Bank of America Long Island. “These efforts are crucial to Bank of America’s commitment to drive progress on important challenges facing society, including our work to address climate change and preserve Earth’s natural resources.” “The flexible funding provided through the Neighborhood Builders program will allow us to expand our capacity to rehabilitate marine animals, build a more diverse staff and board, and assist with emergency situations that may arise, particularly as the cold stun season approaches

The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective. The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.

Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Begins 20th Anniversary Year By Awarding Nearly $1 Million Research Grant To Feinstein Institutes For Medical Research

toward new treatments.” A team of scientists led by Jeremy Koppel, M.D., Co-director of the LitwinZucker Research Center at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, have recently found an association between the distribution of abnormal tau proteins in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients as visualized with advanced

PET neuroimaging and psychotic symptoms. A previous discovery made by the team linked impairments in the processing of facial emotion with the onset of psychosis in Alzheimer’s. This, together with new PET scan evidence of abnormal tau in brain regions believed to be critical for this faculty led investigators to the hypothesis that tau disrupts

networks in regions of the brain necessary for reality testing. Investigators believe that this may result in psychosis and aggression. “The funding provided by AFA made our work possible; and the ongoing support is critical, allowing us to do the necessary research to translate these discoveries into safe and effective treatments for patients and caregivers,”

says Dr. Koppel. The next five-year phase funded by the new AFA grant aims to target these symptoms through the development of immune therapies in the form of antibodies that bind to pathogenic tau. Researchers will conduct a study comprised of three types of participants— those with both Alzheimer’s and psychosis, those

with Alzheimer’s but without psychosis, and healthy controls between the ages of 65 and 85. Participants will undergo a battery of cognitive and electrophysiologic testing, with levels and location of tau quantified in each group with new tau PET imaging technology. The goal is to identify which areas of the brain correspond to specific symptoms, so that they

can be targeted through antibody treatments. AFA is able to award research grants such as this through the generosity of individuals and organizations. The Value Of Activity-Driven Fundraisers Fundraising is vital to the survival of many nonprofit organizations. Charity watchdog groups like Charity Navigator suggest nonprofits should aspire to spend less than 10 percent of their budgets on fundraising. That can be a tall task and underscores the need for charities to find creative, cost-effective ways to raise funds. Nonprofit organizations raise funds in various ways. Some organizations partner with local businesses and receive a portion of the proceeds participating establishments earn on certain days, while other organizations may cold call prospective donors during times of the year when giving

to charity tends to increase, such as the holiday season. Activity-driven fundraisers are another popular way for nonprofit organizations to raise funds, and these endeavors can be highly effective. What are activity-driven fundraisers? Activity-driven fundraisers focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds. The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activity-driven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow

suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Additional examples of activity-driven fundraisers are runs and walks in which participants solicit donations from supporters that increase with each mile they walk or run. The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk and fun run is one popular activity-driven fundraiser that annually attracts sizable numbers of participants and donors. Are activity-driven fundraisers effective? The sheer volume of activity-driven fundraisers

makes it more difficult to gauge the success of these events. However, a recent study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people are inclined to contribute more when the experience is painful and labor-intensive. That suggests that activity-driven fundraisers like charity runs can be highly effective and lucrative ways to raise money. Indeed, various estimates suggest the Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $220 million worldwide. Nonprofit organizations raise funds in myriad ways. Activity-driven fundraisers are among the more engaging, and often successful, ways to raise money for a good cause.
