Two Seniors Awarded QuestBridge Scholarships recognized as Match Scholarship Recipients. This is the highest number of Match Scholarship Recipients to date for QuestBridge. The Match Scholarship is offered as part of a financial aid package provided by the college that covers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and travel expenses. Altenbakji is ranked No. 17 in his graduating class with a GPA of 101.31. He is a Presidential Scholar nominee and a SUNY Farmingdale Smart Scholar. He is a student ambassador at the high school and has been a member of the science research program since ninth grade. Altenbakji plans to study neuroscience at Boston College. Ranked No. 3 in the
graduating class, Alara boasts a GPA of 104.25. Some of her science honors include first place at the SAWAA Science Research Competition, honors award at Long Island Science Congress Science Research Competition, and high honors at Long Island Science Congress Science Research Competition. Alara has participated in numerous summer academic programs including the STEM Prep Summer Institute at Brookhaven National Lab, Rising STEM Scholars Program at Brookhaven National Lab, High School Research Program and Internship at Brookhaven National Lab and CATALYST Academy at Cornell University. She plans to study mechanical engineering at Duke University.

All Around The World For The Holidays Third graders from Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District are taking a virtual trip
around the world as they learned about different countries and their holiday traditions in December. For the holidays around
the world lessons, students created their passports to get ready for their flights. They located different countries on the map and
then pretended to take flight on a plane to their destination. The third grade teachers donned their pilot hats and
scanned passports prior to takeoff. After reading articles, the students kept travel journals about each of the seven countries
they visited. They learned about what languages they speak, holiday traditions, population and life expectancy.

Two Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School seniors – Rebecca Alara and Mohamad Altenbakji – have been named QuestBridge Scholars. QuestBridge’s National College Match is a college scholarship application process that helps outstanding high school seniors gain admission and full four-year scholarships to the nation’s most selective colleges. Alara has matched with Duke University and Altenbakji with Boston College. Out of more than 20,800 applicants, QuestBridge selected 6,683 finalists to be considered for the QuestBridge National College Match Scholarship. This year, QuestBridge’s 50 college partners matched with 2,242 finalists, who are

Award-Winning Authors On Display During Family Literacy Night

It was lights, camera, action for Family Literacy Night at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District on Nov. 30. Students came dressed in their Hollywood best attire as they walked the red carpet for their grand entrance to the school building. In the classroom,
the literacy component featured readalouds by award-winning authors including “Knuffle Bunny” by Mo Willems for kindergarten through second graders and “Amelia and Eleanor Go for a Ride” by Pam Munoz Ryan for grades three through five. The students played literacy games tied into their Fundations lessons
including some of their trick words. There was also a math component tied into the night where students designed their own paper airplanes and measured their distance. Each student went home with a popcorn container full of games and book of their own.

Suffolk Top SUNY School In Cyber Competition Suffolk County Community College students Ryan Riazi, Jose Miguel Mancero, Wilson Pineda, Justin Trieu, Enoch Gomez, Manuel Gomez and Dylan Zagal recently competed in the Fall 2023 National Cyber League Competition, finished 50th overall in the nation, were the fourth highest ranked community college team in the nation and the top SUNY school in the national cyber security competition. The competition featured participation from 8,583 students from 802 high schools, colleges, and universities nationwide, representing all 50 states. Overall, Suffolk placed: · 50th in the Nation · Top 10% of all competitors

students achieved comes from transforming the knowledge gained from the high caliber curriculum at Suffolk and executing those skills in a realworld scenario. Being amongst the dedication and enthusiasm of this group of students is amazing,” said Cybersecurity Club Advisor Jon Sadowski. The NCL Competition is a biannual event that enables students to prepare and test themselves against practical cybersecurity challenges that they will likely face in the workforce, such as identifying hackers from forensic data, pen testing and auditing vulnerable websites, recovering from ransomware attacks and additional cyber skill sets. Students that participate in the NCL receive valuable performance data through individualized Scouting Reports, which aligns their experience to industry certifications and government standards. The reports enable students to showcase tangible evidence of their technical skills to employers.

Long Island State Parks To Host 29th Annual Winter Run Series The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will host its 29th annual Winter Run Series beginning January 2024. The series will begin Sunday, January 14 at Heckscher State Park with an 80’s theme. Additional runs will be held January 21 at Robert Moses State Park with an
