SECOND GRADE SCIENTISTS STUDY MATTER - The second graders at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District are learning all about water cycles and the different states of matter this December. Students in Ms. Orlando’s class conducted a science experiment, filling a clear bag with water taped on the window. Each day, they observe the changes in the water line. Students in Ms. Bennett’s class built structures using different blocks to represent the different particles that make up matter. Another group worked with mystery bags, using their senses to hypothesize what was in each bag. In Ms. McCormack’s class, students worked on their Chromebooks to study different stages of matter. Northwest Gamers Bring Holiday Stories To Life

“Every video game begins with a story,” Lori Heavey told her third graders at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District to begin a seasonal technology activity in the days before the holiday break.

Students wrote holiday stories, then created video games based upon these stories using the Bloxels app on mini iPads. Ms. Heavey explained the essential components of video games including a hero, a villain and obstacles. The young programmers

were able to select their characters, background, coins and other features to make custom games on the touchscreen devices. Games also had to include story boxes that related back to each student’s original writing piece.

SHOWING OFF IROQUOIS TRADITION - Fourth graders in Jennifer Spizuco, Katie Zecha and Karina Cranmer’s classes at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School in the Copiague School District designed and built longhouses as an extra credit assignment after completing their English language art’s module on the Iroquois. Students read and studied nonfiction texts to learn about what life was like for the BRINGING HOLIDAY STORIES TO LIFE - Northwest Elementary School third Iroquois people during traditional times. Students gathered different materials of graders, from left, Kialie Jones, Kirsten Lewis and Jacob Thesatus used the Bloxels app their choice to give their longhouses a natural look. The YMCA of Long Island is a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors,

Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y!
