obstacles she faced growing up in Brooklyn, born in Puerto Rico to parents who didn’t speak much English. She spoke about her educational journey and the struggles she faced. But, she said, when she took the job as a leave replacement in Copiague, she knew she had finally found her calling. “I found teachers I can look up to and aspire to be like,” Marcedo said. “I learned that it’s fine to make mistakes. I have found a career that I am

passionate about and I learn every day from my colleagues and my students.” Her advice to the students: find your passion and your purpose and find lessons in the failures. After a brief question and answer session, the students worked in teams and reflected on the lessons learned. Each team created a poster board and shared their thoughts in a brief presentation with their peers.

They were joined by members of the district’s administration, faculty members and past honored speakers. The day began with a powerful rendition of Alicia Keys’ “Girl on Fire” by the women’s Madrigal Choir, led by choir director Gina Occhiogrosso. Walter G. February 2016. During that time, he has spearheaded several initiatives to grow the department, including the addition of competitive cheerleading programs at Amityville Memorial High School and Edmund W. Miles Middle School, and girls lacrosse at the high school. This spring, a girls lacrosse team will debut at the middle school. One of Mr. Farkas’ goals has been to increase awareness of Amityville athletics within and beyond the community. That has been accomplished with the creation of a website, www.amityvillewarriors. com, an increased presence on social media and a new weekly newsletter. During his tenure, Amityville has captured four state championships. The boys basketball boys team and boys soccer team each won titles in 2018, and there were individual state champions in wrestling and track and

SNOWFLAKES GALORE - Copiague School District’s monthly theme for December is community and the second graders at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School are working hard to donate back to their school community. The students in Mrs. Gaertner’s class and Mrs. Daniels and Mrs. Smith’s class crafted hundreds of snowflake ornaments using popsicle sticks. The classes then donated the ornaments to the school’s Parent-Teacher Association for their holiday fair to give to students who may not be able to shop for their families. Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family

Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Students Play Santa partnership with nonprofit organization Christmas Magic to help grant the wishes of children across Long Island. Every year, the organization provides the WAC PAC with Christmas lists for dozens of children along with funds to purchase the gifts. With a budget of $60 per child, the students made three trips to Target to shop, then returned to the high school to wrap the presents.

Mr. McGowan said that this is not the first time they have provided toys for Amityville children, but it has been several years. It meant a lot to the high school students to know their efforts were helping youngsters in their own community. “I love doing this,” senior Isabella Mohan said. “It’s great to give back and we’re giving back within the district.”

Amityville Students Connect With Long Island Peers Amityville Memorial High School students and their peers from across Long Island are exploring issues affecting society through the Breaking Borders program. This is the second year Amityville has partnered with high schools in other districts, including Freeport, Levittown, Oyster BayEast Norwich and Syosset, to spark meaningful and productive conversations about serious topics. Each school hosts a gathering of students, who bond over a pizza lunch

before splitting in smaller groups to talk about the topic of the day. Every group is led by a student facilitator who introduces discussion prompts. When Amityville hosted, the topic was “How does racism affect our society?” Sophomores Alexia Gordon and Carlos Reyes began the program by introducing their guests to Amityville and its diverse student population. Amityville social studies teacher Matthew Tomasi explained that the premise of Breaking Borders is to

give students a chance to interact with their peers from different backgrounds. He said that when people step out of their comfort zones, it makes the world more inclusive.
