with Jamie Lynn Ryan Step by Step “In wisdom gathered over time, I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.” ~ Ansel Adams I’ve recently taken to listening to the weekly podcasts of an old college friend, centered on the practice of positive psychology and the various methods we can use to incorporate these measures into our daily lives. Topics have ranged from finding our individual purpose in life to reaching long term goals to increasing our kindness toward others and minimizing our natural tendency to be judgmental. Each episode is broken into three segments - “Science Says,” based on a recent scientific study and the research generated by it; “Life Hack,” helpful tips to incorporate the findings of said study into everyday habits; and “Practitioner’s Corner,” a conversation with

a professional in the field, drawing on his/her experiences in putting positive psychology into practice. Outside of a couple of psychology courses in high school, I can’t say I’ve ever delved into this area too deeply, much as it does interest me to analyze peoples’ behaviors and how they contribute to our societal mentality. Generally, when one thinks of psychology, it is in a medical context; but this fresh angle has shown that there are plenty of other avenues to explore. As I listened to the latest episode on my way to work one recent morning, I was particularly struck by the sentiment it touched on - that, too often are we focused on looking ahead, planning for the future, reaching goals… and seldom do we take the time to appreciate the present, to savor the current situation in the way we should. It may

not be where we desire to ultimately wind up; but it is somewhere, and that should count for something. Taking a moment for yourself, whether by observing the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, unwinding with a glass of wine and a book, listening to a favorite song, even spending time decompressing via yoga or meditation, can make a world of difference in your own universe. There will always be obstacles to overcome; but the more positivity you fill your life with, the easier the negatives will be to navigate. Simply finding this particular podcast has done wonders itself; taking that 30 minutes weekly to listen to the musings of those on a path to selfdiscovery can only benefit those who are open to receiving their messages. Every day is an exploration; may we enjoy the discoveries each one uncovers along the way.

The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts is proud to have joined with Project9Line in presenting “Active about the Arts,” an art and photography exhibition open to Active Duty Military and Veterans on Long Island. The exhibit ran from October 16th to October 26th at Old Town Hall, 47 West Main Street in Babylon Village. There was an Artists’ reception that was open to the public on Thursday, October 26th. BACCA was honored to showcase the artistic talents of the men and women who have served our Country. Also joining in this exhibition were photographers from the

Vet Center in Babylon. Project9line focuses on bridging the communication gap between Veterans and civilians. Through “Outreach, Communication and Purpose,” this positive approach enables all Veterans to express themselves uniquely through many forms of art. The arts have inspired these men and women to use their creativity and to allow the healing process their talent affords them, to enrich their lives. BACCA Board President Shawn Cullinane and Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon presented the artists with proclamations at the Artist reception. The success of the show would not have been possible without the support of National Endowment for the Arts, The Town of Babylon, and NYSCA. Marge Ryan, Project9line Executive Director, worked with BACCA to create this special show. Carol Wirth, Executive Director, and Wendy Correa, photography teacher from the Vets Center in Babylon, exhibited the work of their photographers. Anthony D’Avino, an artist from North Babylon, was the curator for this show. On the evening of the reception, Ernie D’Alessio, who is the Music Director for Project9line, played guitar for all to enjoy. BACCA is well known for its support of the arts in the Town of Babylon. This event was a way of honoring the brave men and women who have served our Country, and it was thrilling to see the inspired works of our truly creative Veterans and Active Duty Military.

Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations. They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room,

building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties, and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. Once in a while as I ride in my car down Montauk Highway My mind goes back to Seabury Street on a crisp Autumn day Eight years old, I would cycle with my friends Down its road and around its bend Shingled houses and large oak trees Would grace this passage from end to end Although only six blocks long and quite narrow The charm it exuded seemed like a lone sparrow Avenues are wider and more prominent now But that vision of Seabury Street remains unbowed
