New Campaign Launched great strides have been made in reducing the number of uninsured children throughout the State,” said Pam Hassen, Fidelis Care Chief Marketing Officer. “We’ve been proud to be part of this concerted effort, and now, we’re strengthening our commitment to reach families in need. Our grassroots, community-based outreach has always been the heart of the Fidelis Care mission.” According to the Children’s Defense Fund–New York, over 97 percent of the more than 4.5 million children in the State have health coverage, which is the highest level in history.

Even with this positive statistic, approximately three percent, or about 135,000 children, remain uninsured. Reaching this population is the goal of Fidelis Care’s campaign. The new campaign features TV, print, radio, outdoor, and digital advertising, video and social media promotion, as well as hundreds of “Every Child Covered” community events across the State where parents can find resources and information, ask questions of Fidelis Care Representatives, and receive help enrolling in a plan. Fidelis Care is also engaging its partnerships with

the NY Liberty of the WNBA and New York City Football Club of Major League Soccer in the campaign, with players from each team featured in a TV spot promoting the “Let’s Get Every Child Covered” message. Lifestyle expert and Fidelis Care brand ambassador Evette Rios is also featured, reflecting upon her personal experience as a mom and her understanding of the importance of routine and preventive health care for kids. “With regular checkups, immunizations, vision and dental care, and a primary care provider who knows their health history, children with

health insurance are more likely to receive the care they need,” added Fidelis Care Chief Medical Officer, Vincent Marchello, MD. “We want to be at the forefront of building healthier futures in the lives of our youngest members.” Many parents may not be aware that quality, affordable coverage is available through the State’s Child Health Plus program for kids under 19. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Copiague School District recognized its finest artists and student achievements during a special ceremony held prior to the June 19th board of education meeting. District administrators, faculty and board members gathered with invited students and their guests in the Copiague Middle School auditorium to celebrate their successes. Chosen by the Copiague Board of Education, the Student Recognition Awards highlight students for their outstanding achievements in their academic, fine arts or community service. They are presented twice a year to a small number of students for their special accomplishments.

“Publicly recognizing excellence is our way of celebrating some of the great successes of the Copiague schools’ programs and, at the same time, enabling us to showcase outstanding role models to our school community,” said Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon. Twenty students were honored during the ceremony, as board members read a brief description from teachers and principals on why the students were chosen for the award. The 2017 Superintendent’s Art Gallery inductees and Fine Arts Festival crowd favorites were on display

for the audience to enjoy. Now in its 21st year, the Superintendent’s Art Gallery began when the Copiague art teachers selected several pieces of student artwork to display. Over the years, the collection has grown to provide a showcase of student artwork in corridors and offices in each of the schools. Each of the framed pieces is identified by a brass plate noting the student-artist’s name, grade level and year the piece was completed. Crowd favorite art pieces – four in total this year from the elementary, middle school and high school – are also chosen by the Copiague community during the annual Fine Arts Festival.

Starting a New Chapter More than 400 eighthgrade students from Copiague Middle School in the Copiague School District celebrated the end of their middle school days and the beginning of their high school years during two moving up ceremonies on June 21st at the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School auditorium. With central administrators, board of education members, families and invited guests in attendance, the future Class of 2021 proceeded into the ceremony to “Pomp and Circumstance” played by select members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and gathered on the stage to celebrate the culmination of their

middle school careers. Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon offered words of advice and encouragement to the future high schoolers. “Take advantage of all the high school has to offer,” she said. “Your middle school teachers have prepared you well for the next chapter. Continue to work hard and put in the effort and you will continue to be successful. I challenge you to join the clubs, musical groups or sports that interest you. I encourage you to get involved in high school.” Copiague Middle School Student Council president Aniyah Woods addressed her fellow classmates

Another milestone was celebrated at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) when its inaugural chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) inducted 19 new members this year. These students, attending LIHSA from throughout Long Island, were recognized not only for their skill on the dance floor but also for their academic achievements and leadership. “These are highachieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,” said Lead Dance Instructor Dina Denis-Paolucci, who spearheaded efforts to launch the LIHSA chapter of the NHSDA. “I’m really proud of all of you,” she told her students at the induction ceremony. “This is a huge accomplishment for our program.” The LIHSA NHSDA members were directly involved in the development of their new chapter and helped plan the ceremony. Class Day Celebrations Fifth-grade students throughout the Copiague School District celebrated their academic accomplishments and reflected on their elementary school years as they move up to Copiague Middle School in September at their respective Class Day celebrations on June 15th and 16th. Administrators, faculty, parents and invited guests gathered to celebrate as the fifth-grade students marched in to “Pomp and Circumstance.” Student council officers greeted their classmates at each of the ceremonies and remembered the memories

shared over the last six years. Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon offered words of encouragement for the fifth-grade classes at Susan E. Wiley and Great Neck Road elementary schools, while Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Jeanette Altruda addressed audiences at Deauville Gardens East and Deauville Gardens West elementary schools. At each of the Class Day ceremonies, the fifthgraders were recognized with awards for academic

merit, leadership, principal’s awards, Presidential Awards for Educational Excellence and Educational Improvement, and citizenships awards. The fifth-grade teachers and principals at each of the four elementary schools facilitated the presentation of diplomas. Students also showed off their musical talents by performing a variety of selections, including their elementary class songs for the final performance. Students and guests gathered for a celebration following each of the ceremonies.

Annual Meeting

The Child Care Council of Suffolk’s (CCCS) 2017 Annual Meeting – recently held at Touro Law School, Central Islip, New York – featured a keynote address by Lawrence Levy, executive dean, National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, who spoke about “The Changing Demographics of Child Care.” Levy discussed the dynamic demographic shifts that are altering the face of suburban Long Island as well as suburbs across the nation. Martinez as the “2017 Outstanding Child Care Advocate.” Martinez described the award as “one for the heart for me.” As a former principal and the sole former educator on the legislature, Martinez recognizes that there is “a lot of work to be done on the New York State level” and stated her “full support to advocate for children.” The CCCS Annual Meeting additionally featured the presentation of “Staff Anniversary Recognition” Awards and the reelection of the CCCS Board of Directors Officers:
