Regional FRC participants shared experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program. After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components - and only limited instructions. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics

The snooze button. That wonderful option to roll over and drift back to sleep for just a few more minutes, or hours, apparently. Hence, why it is now 5 p.m. on deadline day and I am just beginning to formulate a column. Well, some semblance of one anyway. So what has everyone been doing this winter to keep occupied now that the holiday rush is officially over? Catching up on a little reading, maybe? Some TV series binge watching, perhaps? I, personally, am guilty of both vices, having

made it my mission to complete the entire five volume series of Game of Thrones before the next season premiere, which… well, let’s just say, at nearly 1,000 pages per volume, is looking a bit overly optimistic at the moment. Of course, if I didn’t spend every spare hour binging on old episodes of Gilmore Girls on Netflix, all seven seasons of it, that would probably speed the process along, but… there’s just something about reliving the innocence of my high school and college days whilst living the madness of being an adult. (Speaking of, I don’t think people use terms like “hence”

and “whilst” quite enough, don’t you agree? A column topic for another time.) In any case, winter isn’t so bad if you know how to fill your time. And if vegetating on the couch is the best option, go with it. The long, dark nights, the bonechilling temperatures… all great reasons to curl up with a giant mug of hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows) and a blanket. Just try not to let the hours get away from you, as, before you know it, the birds begin chirping and it’s time to rise and shine and do it all again. Of course, there’s always the snooze button if you need a few extra minutes.

On March 19th at Adelphi University in Garden City, 178 original works of art will be auctioned to benefit the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program. These pieces are “Creative Cups” - ordinary bras that have been turned into folk art. The inspirations for the Creative Cups are many. Artist Richard Vaux of Lloyd Neck evoked autumn with his design “Wishful Landscape II.” Girl Scouts from Troop 3648 in Farmingdale made “Girl Scout Cookies” to honor the memory of Girl Scout Founder Juliet Gordon Lowe, who died from breast cancer. On January 7th, staff members of South Bay Sports & Physical Therapy presented their donation of non-perishable foods to Our Lady of Grace in West Babylon. The food collected by

staff and patients at South Bay Sports & Physical Therapy throughout the month of December will help feed families in need in the town of Babylon. After the holiday season, food donations tend to

decline while the demand for food remains the same. South Bay Sports & Physical Therapy believes the extra food for the less fortunate in the community will make a difference.

Sharing The Season The holidays are a wonderful time of year, a time to enjoy our family and friends. For the children and adolescents at South Oaks Hospital, the season was much brighter through the generosity of the Massapequa Kiwanis Club. On December 23rd, Kiwanis Club representatives Kathleen Behan, Rick Falta and Susan Febbraro arrived at South Oaks Hospital’s

Valentine Hall weighed down with toys, pajamas, slippers and games for all the kids. The gifts were selected by the members of the Kiwanis to meet the unique needs and ages of the children and adolescents. “The excitement and smiles on our children and adolescent faces will be invaluable. Through the kindness of the Kiwanis Club and their mission of community service, our

kids will feel firsthand the magic of the season,” said Christine Moran, vice president of behavioral health services. The Kiwanis Club of Massapequa made a real difference and the hospital thanks them for their generosity, care and concern and wishes each member of the Kiwanis Club and their families a very happy, healthy New Year.

Passing The Torch On January 12th, the Copiague School District Board of Education accepted the resignation for the purposes of retirement of Superintendent of Schools Charles A. Leunig, effective August 31st, 2015, while simultaneously appointing Associate Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Bannon as his successor. During Mr. Leunig’s seven years as superintendent, Copiague’s Regents Diploma rate rose to 93%, the Advanced Placement Program was nationally recognized by the College Board three times in the last five years, including being named Small School District of the Year in 2012, and student academic, athletic and extracurricular programs were expanded, with the inclusion of a science research program at the high school and middle school. He joined the Copiague School District in 1994, serving as the Director of Personnel, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administrative Services and Deputy Superintendent before being named Superintendent of School in 2008. The Board of Education considered their options regarding the selection of the next superintendent, carefully analyzing the professional qualities and personal characteristics that would be ideal to lead Copiague into the future. Following many internal

discussions, the Board decided the clear candidate was already serving the district, and unanimously voted to appoint Dr. Bannon to the position of Superintendent of Schools, effective Sept. 1, 2015. By appointing Dr. Bannon, who has worked closely with Mr. Leunig in her role as a central administrator, the Board continues to

as an elementary school principal in the Valley Stream UFSD #13, Dr. Bannon returned to Copiague in 2001 to serve as Principal of the Great Neck Road Elementary until her promotion to Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction in 2005. She was appointed to Associate Superintendent in 2012. Dr. Bannon holds a Bachelor of Arts in comparative history from SUNY Old Westbury, a Master of Science in elementary education from Dowling College, a professional diploma in educational administration from Dowling, and a doctorate in educational administration from St. John’s University. “The Board of Education takes great pride in our ability to hire from within to fill management positions with the district,” said Board of Education President Brian J. Sales. “We are fortunate to once again find an exceptional candidate within the ranks of our current administration to lead our district into the future. Christmas and New Years are here and gone! All the hustle and bustle of the holidays have left many of us exhausted. We now begin to pack away all the decorations and begin planning for next year. Friends and relatives came together in the spirit of love and kindness and are returning to the grind of everyday normal life. Alas, the old cliché shall be spoken often in the next few weeks, “Why can’t the Christmas Spirit last all year long?” Something we should all be aware of is the “Post-Holidays’ Blues Syndrome.” We all suffer from this syndrome to some degree. Some of us just seem a little down and cannot get our act together. Some of us refuse to put away the decorations. We tend to blame the feeling on exhaustion, or being too busy, but it is a form of the BLUES. Some people however suffer very severely from this syndrome. Consider the person who just lost a loved one recently and suffered through another such season. Consider, also orphaned or troubled children who are lavished with gifts and attention for the holiday season and feel unloved and forgotten about for the rest of the year. Think a moment about those who are unable to get out of their houses and have visitors for 20 days in December, but do not see anyone for the rest of the year. Please don’t get me wrong, I think it is very important and wonderful the spirit of Christmas that touches so many people. But, I just want to point out a few reasons why some people suffer from severe Post-Holiday Blues. There are many other reasons why some people may suffer from this syndrome. And this syndrome may be the beginning of a more severe depression which may grow, especially during the bleak and dismal months of January and February. So, if you suffer from a mild case of Post-Holiday Blues, be secure in the knowledge that it is normal and that many people suffer along with you. But, also be aware that some people suffer from a very severe case of this syndrome and they should be watched. One of the best remedies to cure your “Blues” is to seek someone out to whom you can bring a little Christmas Joy to all year round. Because nothing cures the “Blues” like making someone else smile!
