Bethpage Water District Celebrates Finalists Of This Year’s Water Conservation Poster Contest

The Bethpage Water District (BWD) recently honored the winners of this year’s annual water conservation poster contest with a ceremony, held on June 15, at the Bethpage Public Library. A yearly tradition, in partnership with the Bethpage Union Free School District, all of the Bethpage community’s fifth graders were invited to design posters depicting different ways members of the community could conserve water. The District received more than 220 submissions from students this year for this creative and fun activity that serves to teach the importance of protecting and preserving Long Island’s sole-source aquifer. “All of us at the District were so impressed with the students’ submissions during this year’s water conservation poster contest that it made picking winners very difficult,” said BWD

Commissioner Theresa M. Black. “Their creativity is inspirational and we are truly proud that the youth of this community understand the ways to conserve water so well. Water is our most precious natural resource and something we all too often take for granted, but every student that participated gives us confidence that the future of our water supply and the protection of our aquifer is in good hands.” The winners for the poster contest are as follows: Central Boulevard Elementary School • 1 st Place Angelina Dunn • 2 nd Place Manveer Singh • 3 rd Place Haris Cenanovic Charles Campagne Elementary School • 1st Place Eva Rojas • 2nd Place Christian Tararache

• 3rd Place Amrit Manda Kramer Lane Elementary School • 1st Place Blake Valente • 2nd Place Jake Wu • 3rd Place Leyna Nguyen The District’s Board of Commissioners deliberated on the many poster submissions and selected the finalists based on creativity, design, and the overall water conservation message. This year, the District selected first, second and third place winners from the three elementary schools within the District. Each winner received a trophy and personalized certificate for their winning poster designs. “We’ve been doing the water conservation poster contest for years now, but this year has certainly been one of the best turnouts we’ve had,” said BWD

Chairman John Coumatos. “We have to give all the credit in the world to the school district’s leadership for making lessons about the importance of water, where it comes from and everything that happens in between pulling it from the ground to the delivery to homes, part of the curriculum. The Bethpage Water District looks forward to building upon this positive relationship to ensure the youth of Bethpage continue to have the opportunity to understand all that goes into providing them high-quality water each and every day.” The overwhelming participation in this year’s poster contest was achieved through a focused partnership with the Bethpage Union Free School District that helped integrate many lessons into the existing curriculum surrounding the water cycle and related topics. The BWD and the school

district first partnered up earlier in the year for an effort that provided every fifth-grade student with an opportunity to tour a state-of-the-art water production facility and learn how each of the treatment components worked as well as other lessons about water conservation and preservation. “Bethpage schools have been working alongside our important community partners at the Bethpage Water District to help educate our students on the importance of clean water in our community and the intense lengths our Bethpage Water District goes through to ensure clean drinking water for all,” said Bethpage Union Free School District Superintendent David Schneider. “Our 5th grade students recently visited Plant 6 for an interactive field trip to extend the learning experience on our Water Cycle Unit from the

classroom into the real world.” “We’re very inspired by the interest the school district has had in partnering with us, but even more so with the engagement from the students,” said BWD Commissioner Scott Greco. “There really was a sense of pride and accomplishment in the fact that we could see the lessons learned during the plant tours being reflected in so many of the poster submissions. A New-Look ‘Mikado’ Comes To Bethpage “The Mikado: A Long Island Fantasy,” a new approach to the classic comic opera, will appear for one night only in Bethpage when the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island brings its 2022 production of the beloved show to Bethpage Public Library on Wednesday, July 6, at 7:00 p.m. Directed by Tony Tambasco, with music directed by Stuart Watarz, this all-new “Mikado” recasts the most famous of the Gilbert & Sullivan operas to be set on Long Island’s Gold Coast in the 1920s, the era of Prohibition, the flappers, silent movies and “The Great Gatsby.” “I have attempted to recover the spirit of Gilbert & Sullivan’s intentions with a production that holds a mirror up to the present day, while also engaging in light-hearted fairy-taletelling,” Tambasco said. “Setting `The Mikado’ on

a fantasy Long Island of 100 years ago allows us to activate the `Gatsby’ mythology that is a part of the cultural heritage of Long Island in the service of telling Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic fairy tale of a community overcoming the nonsensical cruelty imposed on its people.” The score for “The Mikado” is packed with famous songs, including the lovely ballad “The Sun, Whose Rays Are All Ablaze,” the rattling patter song “I’ve Got a Little List,” the ingenious trio “I Am So Proud” and the wistful “Titwillow.” The story is a merry farce that’s as funny now as it was in 1885, when the show premiered, and virtually defines the idea of “fun for the whole family.” The cast includes more than a dozen of the company’s finest singers and dancers, more than meeting the challenge of “The Mikado.” Richard Risi plays Nanki-Poo, the

wandering minstrel who’s secretly the son of the allpowerful Mikado (Lloyd Baum). Sabrina Lopez is Yum-Yum, Nanki-Poo’s secret love, with Gayden Wren as her guardian Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner. Tamara Shyngle and Delaney R. Page play Yum-Yum’s schoolmates PittiSing and Peep-Bo, with Kenneth Kopolovicz as the pompous Pooh-Bah and Henry Horstmann as the wily Pish-Tush. Patricia Gallagher plays the fearsome aristocrat Katisha, who claims NankiPoo in marriage and won’t take “No” for an answer. “The Mikado” is a Gilbert & Sullivan opera unlike any other, satirizing English society through a lens that consisted of Japan in the original production and 1920s Long Island in the current show. The Suozzi Scholarship for Excellence is granted by the Morgan Park Summer Music Festival and rewards a student who has demonstrated excellence in music performance and plans to continue studying music in college. Owners of OUR HOUSE CHILDCARE I and II, Loretta Petronzi and her daughter Mary Petronzi Todd, are expanding and opening a brand-new location, OUR HOUSE MONTESSORI SCHOOL at 192 Broadway in Bethpage this September. Our House Montessori School has three intimate classrooms. Each classroom will be taught by certified Montessori teachers. Their school will offer enrichment programs that include yoga, sign language, music & movement, Spanish and Mandarin. Loretta was born and raised in Bethpage. Her father, Raymond Hickey was an engineer at Grumman and helped build the Lunar Excursion Module. The Bethpage Post Office was dedicated after her brother, Brian Hickey FDNY Captain of Rescue 4 in Queens, was lost on 9/11. She married her High School sweetheart and built a home in Bethpage where she raised her 4 daughters. Loretta student taught at West Side Montessori School when she became a certified Montessori teacher. She received a dual master’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education. Mary PetronziTodd received her master’s degree in Literacy from Hofstra University and did her undergraduate in Early Childhood Education. She ran Our House I until opening Our House II. Mary lives in

Kaitlyn O’Connell Named NYSSMA All-State Alternate The Bethpage School District congratulates Bethpage High School senior Kaitlyn O’Connell for her selection as an AllState Wind Ensemble alternate by the New York State School Music Association. The selection process for All-State is extremely rigorous, but O’Connell is an extraordinarily versatile and accomplished musician. She plays clarinet, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax and has been a leader in the high school band. In addition, O’Connell studies music privately, has played in the high school pit orchestra and performs with the Nassau-Suffolk Concert Band. She has participated in many

NYSSMA solo festivals and has been in the Tri-M Music Honor Society for many years at the high school and John F. Kennedy Middle School. O’Connell was the recipient of the 2022 John Philip Sousa National Band Award and received the 2022 NYSCAME Music Leadership Award. She plans to study civil engineering and environmental engineering at the University of New Haven and intends to continue her involvement in music in the marching band, concert band and jazz ensemble. The district thanks O’Connell for her outstanding contributions to the culture of Bethpage High School and wish her the best of luck in the future.

On June 12, 2022 the Catapano Family celebrated three amazing events. In 1922 Carolina and Michele (Michael) Catapano arrived from Ottaviano, Italy and settled in the Bethpage / Hicksville area, where 4 generations still live and celebrated this milestone together. The family also celebrated the 100th Birthday of Anna Catapano Aleixo (6/14/22) and her younger brother Gaetano (Tommy) Catapano’s 90th Birthday (6/13/32). Anna and Tommy are the children of Carolina and Michele and they both still live in Bethpage! The Catapano Family, who originally were local farmers, later owned and operated Catapano Bros. Nursery for generations on the site of their former family farm. Many family members still live and work in the area, as the fifth generation of Carolina and Michele continue to carry on their American Dream!

Letter from the President, As we start the Summer of 2022, it was great to see so many people come together in the community to salute our veterans on Memorial Day. The parade on May 30th, down Broadway in Bethpage, was a huge success and very well attended. This year the chamber added posters of Bethpage veterans on poles throughout the town. The program provided an additional salute to our local heroes.

Another year, and another excellent class of students will be graduating from Bethpage High School. The Chamber has awarded scholarships to four graduating seniors: Nicholas Arrabito, Julia Donnelly, Ashlynn McGrorty, Daniel Skupinsky. The Chamber wishes all the graduates great success in the future. This summer the Chamber is excited to bring back “Music on Broadway” with 2 great shows. Saturday, July 30, 8 pm will feature Endless Summer - a Beach Boys Tribute Band Saturday, August 20, 8 pm will feature SouthBound - Long Island’s Country and Classic Rock Band Both shows will kick off at 7pm on Broadway in Bethpage. Please come out for the shows and remember to support all of our local businesses.
