Bethpage High School Seniors Earn Statewide Science Scholarships Bethpage High School seniors Ava Zingone and Taebin Son were recently selected as winners in the New York State Science Honor Society Scholarship Program. Third place was awarded to Zingone, who earned $250, and honorable mention was awarded to Son, who earned $100. The purpose of the state’s science scholarship program is to encourage an interest and understanding of science and science-related careers, in addition to recognizing the academic achievement in science of high school students. Members of the science honor society are commended for their enthusiasm about research, participate in science-related activities, have demonstrated achievement in science learning, are serviceminded and present excellent personal character. Bethpage’s National Science Honor Society was launched at the start of the school year. Twin Sisters Named Valedictorian, Salutatorian At Bethpage HS Bethpage High School seniors and twin sisters Suchitha Channapatna and Ruchitha Channapatna were named as valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, for the Class of 2022. Suchitha finished with a grade point average of 110.9, while Ruchitha earned a grade point average of 110.5. “I feel very grateful and very lucky, because I know our grade is very intelligent and talented in their own ways,” Suchitha said. “It was a pleasant surprise and I’m grateful to be a part of this district and for all of the opportunities that they provide for us.” Growing up together, the Channapatnas have been best friends to each other and pushed themselves to excel in everything. Both agreed that their personalities are different, which compliments each other. “It was nice for us to have this honor together and it was really nice for us to see all of the hard work we put in starting to pay off,” Ruchitha said. Both scholars take part in many of the same clubs and organizations that includes the high school’s Regal Eagles Robotics team,

science research and music, among other activities. Ruchitha said that those programs expanded their horizons and showed them that the possibilities are endless. “I think it’s been more fulfilling than challenging to participate in so many clubs and groups, because we enjoy everything that we do,” Ruchitha said. Suchitha agreed and added that each activity gives them something to look forward to. “Even though we spend a lot of hours on things like our science research project, it’s that goal of going to a competition and competing with the best that makes it all worthwhile,” Suchitha said. “We always keep a goal in sight so that it’s not a difficult task.” The twins thanked their friends, family, teachers and high school Principal Nicholas Jantz, district Director of Science Chris Pollatos, Director of Technology Andrew Choi and Robotics Club team adviser Leon LaSpina. They both plan to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall. Suchitha plans on studying mechanical or aerospace engineering, and Ruchitha plans on studying biomedical engineering.

The 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe will be the featured armor vehicle during this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island, on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank veterans to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary and participating in an oral histories project that memorializes their experiences. In addition to the Sherman, the weekend will feature military reenactments presented by the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and a parade of operational armor vehicles that comprise the museum’s extensive collection. The Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated,

“The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us.” Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the world.” Admission is $15 adults; $12 children 5 - 12 (under 5 are free); and $12 seniors, (60+) volunteer firefighters and veterans (Please provide ID). Bethpage Hospital Gets Patients On Their Feet

“A step in the right direction” is the message a staff-led walking program at Catholic Health’s St. Joseph Hospital is sending to its patients on the Surgery Unit (S Unit). The Step & Stroll program is an initiative that encourages patients (who are physically able) to get out of bed and walk, with assistance from a clinical staff member. For those who are unable to ambulate safely, the team provides wheelchair strolls through the unit so all patients may partake in the activity. Naomi Rufian. “Even with two years of COVID-19 postponing the event, I still feel like we’ve really grown as a team and I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished so far.” The Regal Eagles were also the recipient of the coveted Engineering Inspiration Award, which is given to a team that “celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s school or organization and community.” As a result, NASA covered the registration costs for the Regal Eagles’ participation at FIRST World Championships. “While I’m extremely proud of what this team has accomplished and how passionate they are about STEM and robotics, I’m really excited that they had the opportunity to compete at the championships,” said District Director of Technology Andrew Choi. Choi also commended team advisers Leon LaSpina and Dennis Costa on another successful build season and competition season. Samar Singh, another member of the Regal Eagles, said it was

an honor to be part of this team knowing the history of this program. “It’s great to know that while the same people aren’t here, we’re still able to build quality robots and host amazing events,” Singh said. Other team members of the Regal Eagles echoed Singh’s comments on the team’s overall success. “No matter who graduates or who joins the team, the culture of the team is always emphasized,” said Regal Eagles member Ruchitha Channapatna. “I feel like that’s been the key to our success over the past six years.” The Regal Eagles described robotics as a three-season sport. In the offseason, they pick up where they left off with the last robot they were working with from September to November. This coincides with the team’s structured training activities which starts in the fall from late October to January. Build season begins in January where they start brainstorming ideas and they have six to eight weeks to complete their project for the regional

competition. Rufian, who oversees outreach, contacts roughly 200 companies to get sponsors before build season. “In terms of outreach, it’s really nice to support other teams and their initiatives as well,” Rufian said. The team also puts together monthly newsletters, they regularly update their website and take part in districtwide activities such as STEM Night to spread awareness of the program. Additionally, the Regal Eagles plan to launch a STEM-related summer camp this year for middle school students. Students will learn skills unique to FIRST Robotics Competition to emphasize the importance and interest of STEM at elementary schools. “It’s helpful that we have them learning at an earlier age,” Singh said. “Maybe they build an interest in middle school so that by the time they get to the high school, we’ll have more talented people on our team. I hope this program also helps to show that this team is more than just robots, and that we celebrate all aspects of STEM.”
