After years of claims and negotiations over water contamination emanating in part from US Navy and Northrop Grumman properties in Bethpage, NY, the Bethpage Water District (BWD), the United States, and the Northrop Grumman Corporation filed a proposed Consent Judgment in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York resolving the matter. As a result, Bethpage Water District will receive $49 million from the United States and Northrop Grumman to treat contamination from plumes tied to the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant Bethpage and the Former Grumman Site. “We appreciate the good faith negotiations on all sides that led to this historic settlement,” said John F. Coumatos, Chair of BWD Board of Commissioners. “This is

with contaminants threatening our water supply, but it does provide real relief to a budget strained by the enormous costs associated with removing contaminants found in the plumes. Thanks to everyone who helped us arrive at this day.” As part of the settlement, Northrop Grumman will use Plant 4 to continue to do its part of the remediation of the plumes by operating Plant 4, and BWD will be able to use the funds to pay for Advanced Oxidation Process treatment for 1,4-dioxane at Plants 5 and 6, and to develop a replacement well outside the plume for Plant 4. “This is how it is supposed to work,” said Matt Edling and Katie Jones of Sher Edling LLP, who represented Bethpage Water District on this matter. “The Bethpage community stood up for itself and

demanded accountability. That led to tough, honest, and wellintentioned collaboration and negotiation. And that brought us to this announcement. Congratulations to Bethpage Water District, and thanks to all parties for putting in the work to get here.” Once the court reviews the filing and enters the judgment, BWD will be able to receive settlement funds according to payment terms laid out in the agreement. “As a lifelong resident of Bethpage and proud Water District Commissioner, I am honored to be a part of this team that has been steadfast in the pursuit of these results that our residents needed and deserved,” said BWD Commissioner Theresa Black. “Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff, Bethpage residents have had access to the highest quality drinking water

despite the challenges of removing contamination from the plume. Councilwoman Vicki Walsh named Victoria as one of the top three winners in the town’s poster contest, “How Plastic Pollution Harms our

Waterways.” The town, in partnership with Friends of the Bay and The WaterFront Center, held the poster contest to raise awareness of environmentally sensitive issues and how they impact Mother Nature and the local community. Students were encouraged to best illustrate what the theme means to them. Victoria, of Mrs. McGarvey’s fourth grade class, was recognized for her creativity in portraying how plastic pollution affects the waters and marine life. Irish Cultural Society Honors 10 Bethpage High School Students

Ten Bethpage High School students were awarded for their excellence in the 2022 Martin J. Kelly Writing Contest hosted by the Irish Cultural Society. Bethpage’s honorees include a first- and second-place winner along with eight honorable mention students. This

year’s contest challenged students to write a creative description of each of the 11 iron workers on a beam as shown in the iconic photograph, “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” by Charles Clyde Ebbets. The annual writing contest is named in honor of Martin J. Kelly, a founding member of

the society and its past president for 23 years until his passing on July 2, 2015. The Irish Cultural Society aims to bring together people with the common goal of learning about their Irish heritage and supporting Irish culture and research.

Spring is here and in just a few short weeks, many—if not all—of the irrigation systems at residents’ homes within the Bethpage community will come online. The Bethpage Water District is here to remind residents that water usage during the spring and summer months in the community nearly triples when compared to the colder months. This increase is almost exclusively tied to residential irrigation systems. With approximately half of the water used to water lawns and gardens is wasted due to inefficient watering practices, the BWD would like to remind residents of some simple, yet effective, water conservation tips. “Our region only has one source of water and in Bethpage, with many

wells currently offline as they receive treatment for contamination stemming from the Northrop Grumman/Navy Plume, it is upon all of us in the community to make a concerted effort to conserve water this spring and summer,” said BWD Chairman John Coumatos. “For most, the cost of water is not prohibitive, which leads to many being unaware of just how much water they are using. We hope that this reminder as well as these tips can help our residents keep more water in our aquifer and help reduce the stress our treatment and distribution systems face during this peak time of year.” One of the most effective ways to conserve water is by swapping out

a standard irrigation timer for a smart irrigation controller. Smart controllers connect to local weather stations via Wi-Fi to continuously adjust water schedules based on the previous, current and future forecasts. The controller automatically ensures that the lawn gets the proper amount of water, about one inch of water per week, and

reduces overwatering and unnecessary water waste. “We are not telling our residents to stop irrigating, we are just asking that they be a little more conscious of the amount of water they are using or unnecessarily wasting during this time of year,” said BWD Commissioner Theresa Black. “By slightly watering daily watering habits and taking

advantage of technology at their disposal, we can collectively save millions of gallons of water this year. That is a good thing for our environment, our operations and our residents’ pocketbooks.” Bethpage residents are also urged to follow the Nassau County Lawn Watering Ordinances, which provide the optimal times to water your lawn. The ordinance states that even-numbered homes can only water on evennumbered days, and odd-numbered homes can only water on oddnumbered days. Nonnumbered homes follow the even-numbered homes schedule. No lawn watering can be done between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on any day. “Following these

long-established County regulations as well as installing water-saving technology can have a massive impact on residents’ water use and, therefore, their bills,” said BWD Commissioner Scott Greco. “Third quarter bills are always the highest of the year because they account for the months when water usage is at its peak.
