The Bethpage Chamber Board hopes that everyone is having a cozy winter and enjoyed the amazing Bethpage Holiday Catalog for December & January that was mailed out to our residents and businesses with fun activities and articles to entertain our community by our friend Nicole Sims at South Bay’s Neighbor. We loved the fantastic story about our 2023 Business Person of the Year Gus Tsiorvas and his family photo and featured article on them and the Embassy Diner.

Our volunteers do their best to share local happenings but our current members have the reserved privilege of being promoted directly to our followers and subscribers so visit your favorite company’s social media pages for updates. Encourage them to renew or join even if they can’t attend meetings at least they’ll get the beneﬁts. Please help our members and support them so we can return the favor with community events sponsored by them and the chamber. January is the perfect time to join our 11714 in 2024! Speaking of that, we’re busy planning the year ahead already and are excited to participate with our friends at the Bethpage Fire Department and Central Park Kiwanis again. ethpage students from Kramer Lane Elementary School recently received a special visit from Bethpage High School graduate,

professional musician and music writer Gabi Rose Feliciano. Feliciano attended Kramer Lane as a young student and graduated from Bethpage

High School back in 2013. Fresh off touring the United States and Canada with the popular music group, the Jonas Brothers, the skilled saxophonist and flautist

returned to her former elementary school where she was warmly greeted by Kramer Lane Principal Kerri McCarthy, her former teachers and staff. During the visit, Kramer Lane third graders and fifth graders visited the school’s all-purpose room to hear Feliciano’s story. Along with playing her saxophone for the students, Feliciano spoke about her

personal journey through the Bethpage schools, her positive experience in the district’s music program and how her Kramer Lane fifth grader teacher, Linda Swartz, encouraged and inspired her to write. She reunited with Mrs. Swartz, now a third grade teacher at the school, during her visit with the grade. Principal McCarthy, who was Feliciano’s principal

when she attended John F. Kennedy Middle School, remembered Feliciano fondly and enjoyed having her back in Bethpage to share her story with students. “It was great to see her again,” Ms. McCarthy said. “It is so nice to see a student who is so successful and pursuing their dreams in an area that they love so much.”

GC Tech Cosmetology Students Prep Broadway Stars For Gala Fundraising Performance

It was all part of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) special performance to raise funds for the school. BRIGHTENING UP THE HOLIDAYS! Once again this year the Bethpage Federal Credit Union sponsored and worked with the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce at the Annual Holiday Lighting on December 3, 2023. During this event, close to 100 Bethpage children and friends stopped by the BFCU Workshop located inside Century 21 Catapano Homes, where they took time out from the festivities, petting zoo and other Holiday activities to create and decorate Holiday cards for local Veterans. The cards were delivered by BCC Past President Teri Catapano Black in early December to the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in East Northport, where they were delivered to Health Systems Specialist Joseph Sledge. Their loving cards were distributed to the veterans as they came for care in the Primary/Specialty Pavilion. Thanks again to the children of Bethpage and the Bethpage Federal Credit Union for helping to brighten up the holidays for our local Heroes!

A Brief History Of American Football

lmost two-thirds of adults in the United States say they currently watch National Football League games. But American football is no longer relegated to the boundaries of the United States, as it is becoming a global sport. According to the International Federation of American Football, there are 80 countries with organized federations governing the game. Plus, thousands of youth and adult leagues exist all over the world. Even though soccer has long been a global sport, it seems the other kind of “football” is quickly catching up. The sport known as American football was borne out of the English sports of association football (soccer) and rugby. During the late 19th century, elite Northeastern colleges took up the sport, playing a soccer-type game with rules adopted from the London Football Association.

Intercollegiate matches began to spring up at schools such as Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, and McGill University. Rugby-type rules became preferential among players and spectators. Walter Camp, known affectionately as the “Father of American Football,” transformed the rugbystyle game into the one that resembles American football today. Camp brought two key innovations to the game. The opening “scrummage” was eliminated, and a rule was introduced that required a team to give up the ball after failing to advance down the field a specific yardage. Camp also developed the quarterback position, lines of scrimmage, and the scoring scale used in football today. Early games were controversial because of the high rate of injury. Even President Theodore Roosevelt stepped in to ask collegiate teams to revise

regulations to make the game less brutal. The committee overseeing the rules would later become known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Thanks largely in part to the popularity of college football, professional football began to gain traction with the public.

The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. That league would later become the National Football League. The first televised NFL game occurred in 1939. Eventually, American football’s popularity would explode. Cheerleaders were

introduced to the game in the 1960s. Currently, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are the most famous squad. Six teams in the NFL do not have cheerleaders: the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Green Bay Packers.

Football games typically last around 3 hours. The average attendance for an NFL game is 66,957 spectators. American football has become a multibillion-dollar industry. What developed on college campuses has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.

Senior Honored As 2024 Scholar For Outstanding Research

he Bethpage Union Free School District is pleased to announce that Ankur Raghavan, a senior from Bethpage High School, was recently recognized as a 2024 scholar in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, a program of Society for Science. He is among 300 students to be honored in the science and math competition for his exceptional research project. This year’s scholars hail from 196 American and international high schools and homeschools in 36 states and China. Raghavan was selected for his project “The Reduction of Agricultural Water Consumption Through the Utilization of Wireless Sensor Arrays.” His research looked at ways to reduce the amount of water that is being wasted on farms. Raghavan developed a cost-effective soil moisture sensor that would replace farmers going out in the field to

He began his research in August 2022, started building his project a few months later and completed it in December 2022. “I am extremely confident that Ankur will have a successful career in the STEM field, due largely in part to his ability to think critically and tactfully about problems,” Raghavan’s science research teacher

Nicole Dulaney said. “As demonstrated through his research project, Ankur successfully designed a solution to an essential global issue by thoroughly engaging in the engineering design process.” Raghavan’s application was among 2,162 submitted into the competition this year from 712 high schools across 46 states, Guam, Puerto Rico and ten other countries. According to Society for Science, scholars are selected based on their “outstanding research, leadership skills, community involvement, commitment to academics, creativity in asking scientific questions and exceptional promise as STEM leaders demonstrated through the submission of their original, independent research projects, essays and recommendations.” Raghavan will continue in the competition with the

hopes of being named one of the 40 student finalists who will participate in final judging. Finalists are expected to be announced on Jan. 24. These finalists will then continue to

compete for more than $1.8 million in awards during a week-long competition in Washington, D.C. in March. “We are extremely proud of Ankur and all his

accomplishments in our school district,” Director of Science K-12 Chris Pollatos said. “Thank you to all the staff at Bethpage, mentors, and family that helped him achieve this great honor!”

alentine’s Day sparks one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year. Though it might not inspire the masses like Black Friday, Valentine’s Day compels millions of people to find gifts for that special someone in their lives each February. The National Retail Federation’s Annual Valentine’s Day Spending Survey found that the average person expected to devote $175 to Valentine’s Day spending.

Facts About St. Valentine

aint Valentine is the patron saint of lovers and engaged and married couples. He also is the name behind the holiday that inspires images of red hearts and rose petals in the middle of February. Not much is actually known about St. Valentine because records are sparse. However, these facts have emerged.

Any heartfelt gift can light up a sweetheart’s smile on Valentine’s Day, but certain items are more popular than others on February 14. Though Valentine’s Day shoppers can always go their own way when shopping for their sweethearts, some of the more traditional gifts remain wildly popular. In its survey, the NRF found that these go-to gifts maintained their status as the most popular items for individuals to show their love for that special someone:

• St. Valentine could be one of at least three individuals who were martyred. In fact, some believe there were about a dozen St. Valentines.

• Candy: Fifty-six percent of survey respondents indicated they planned to buy candy for their sweetheart on Valentine’s Day. Though candy can suffice, chocolates inside a heart-shaped box are especially popular in mid-February.

• Of course St. Valentine is known for presiding over lovers. However, he’s also the patron saint of epilepsy, watching over those who experience seizures associated with the disease.

• Greeting cards: Greeting cards will likely never go out of style, as 40 percent of respondents indicated. • Flowers: The appeal of a bouquet is undeniable, prompting 37 percent of shoppers to give flowers on Valentine’s Day. • A night out: A romantic night out is perhaps as meaningful as ever in a world still emerging from the pandemic. So it’s no surprise that 31 percent of respondents indicated they planned to take their sweethearts out for a night on the town. • Jewelry: Though it might rank below the others on this list, jewelry remains a go-to gift on Valentine’s Day. And with total Valentine’s Day spending on jewelry estimated at more than $6 billion, this could be where most Valentine’s Day dollars go this February.

• Visitors to the Basilica of Santa Maria in Rome can find the flower-adorned skull of St. Valentine on display. Other parts of St. Valentine’s skeleton are on display in the Czech Republic, England, France, and Ireland. • Some people think Geoffrey Chaucer may have invented Valentine’s Day. In his “Parlement of Foules,” he speaks of a tradition of courtly love with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day. This association became more established after Chaucer’s poem had received widespread attention.

Directions: Preheat the oven to 325 F. Make a graham cracker crust by mixing the melted butter with the crumbs and sugar. Press into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan. Mix the ricotta, sugar, egg yolks, cream, espresso, coffee liqueur, lemon zest, and salt until creamy. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Carefully fold the egg whites into the ricotta mixture. Stir in the chocolate morsels and pour onto the prepared crumb crust.

Cheesecake Makes A Decadent Valentine’s Day Treat

Bake the cake for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until just set in the middle. The cake will still seem wobbly but will be lightly browned and cracked around the edges. Remove the cake from the oven and cool on a rack for 30 minutes. Refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 6 hours or overnight before running a sharp knife along the edge of the cake and removing the pan. Cut into wedges to serve. Garnish with shaved chocolate and strawberries, if desired.

Certain dishes have long since staked their claim on the game watch dinner and snacking tables, and nachos certainly need no introduction to football fans. Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer. Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired.

United States Navy Blue Angels, Which Headlined Very First Bethpage Air Show In 2004, To Headline 20th Anniversary Show Taking Place May 25 - 26, 2024

ethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are very pleased to announce that the United States Navy Blue Angels, which headlined the first Bethpage Air Show in 2004, will headline the 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and Sunday, May 26, 2024. It was also announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention today that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the A-10 Demo Team will perform in 2024. Civilian performers announced at the convention include Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot; the world-famous Skytypers; Warbird Thunder Airshows and the American Airpower Museum Warbirds. Additional 2024 performers will be announced shortly. “We are thrilled to welcome the United States Navy Blue Angels back to Long Island for our 20th Anniversary show, said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. “For the past 20 years, we have had the distinct pleasure of producing a show that has grown to

medium zucchini, diced (7 to 8 cups)

plum tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped, (about 1 cup)

tablespoons tarragon or cider vinegar

tablespoons minced fresh basil

teaspoon salt, or to taste

Cook the bacon in a soup pot over medium heat until the fat is released and the bacon bits are crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the onions and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are a light golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the zucchini, cover the pot and cook until the zucchini starts to become translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the broth, tomatoes, tomato puree, and vinegar. Bring the soup to a simmer and cook until the vegetables are very tender and the soup has developed a good flavor, 15 to 20 minutes. Add the basil to the soup, and season with salt and pepper. Serve in heated bowls, garnished with cheddar rusks.

Students Learn From Successful Illustrator And Author

tudents in grades K-5 from the Bethpage Union Free School District recently met Chris Soentpiet, an awardwinning children’s book illustrator and author.

Mr. Soentpiet visited Central Boulevard, Charles Campagne and Kramer Lane elementary school to discuss his work and share his art process with students.

During his presentations, he showed students some of his book illustrations and the steps he took to bring them to life. This included photographing real people to serve as

models for his illustrations. To give students a better idea of how he begins his illustrations, he invited one student to the stage and began sketching them. The classes watched in

amazement as he worked his magic. Mr. Soentpiet also spoke with students about being an author. He highlighted the importance of research when writing a story and

how he creates storyboards. The special visit allowed students develop a better understanding of what an author does and how an illustrator works.

wenty-nine students from the Bethpage Union Free School District’s John F. Kennedy Middle School took the stage on Jan. 9 to compete in a schoolwide spelling bee. The annual event was held

after school in the John F. Kennedy Middle School auditorium. Family and friends cheered on the students as they showcased their impressive spelling skills. One by one, students walked up to the

microphone and were given a word to spell. If they spelled their word incorrectly, they were eliminated. As the competition continued, 29 spellers dwindled down to 25, 15, 10, and then eventually the final two.

Sixth grader Elaina Gardikas was crowned the spelling bee champion and eighth grader Connor Cavalieri was named the runner up. Both students will take a written exam during the week of Feb. 5

to qualify for the regional competition. The top 40 students in the area will be invited to the Long Island Regional Bee which will be held on March 21 in the Half Hollow Hills School District. The winner will

then advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C. The Bethpage Union Free School District wishes Gardikas and Cavalieri the best of luck as they progress in the competition.

Spaghetti Is The Star Of This Casserole

Rich and savory dishes that warm from the inside can chase away the chills of winter weather and bring the entire family together around the table. Spaghetti is often paired with meatballs and covered in marinara sauce as an ideal comfort dish. But there’s much more to this pasta, and it can be enjoyed in many different ways. In this recipe for “Chicken Spaghetti” courtesy of Ree Drummond, known as the “The Pioneer Woman,” on Food Network, spaghetti is paired with several ingredients and baked into a tasty casserole that can easily accommodate a crowd.

Chicken Spaghetti 8 servings cups cooked chicken into two-inch pieces cups spaghetti, uncooked and broken

cans cream of mushroom soup cups grated sharp cheddar cheese cup finely diced green pepper finely diced onion 4-ounce jar diced pimentos, drained

cups reserved chicken broth from pot teaspoon Lawry’s Seasoned Salt

er teaspoon to 1⁄4 teaspoon cayenne pepp Salt and pepper, to taste cheese cup additional grated sharp cheddar

Directions 1. C ook one cut-up fryer chicken and pick out the meat to make two cups. 2. C ook spaghetti in the same chicken broth until al dente. Do not overcook. When spaghetti is cooked, combine with remaining ingredients except an additional 1 cup sharp cheddar. 3. P lace mixture in a casserole pan and top with remaining sharp cheddar. Cover and freeze for up to six months, cover and refrigerate for up to two days, or bake immediately: 350 F for 45 minutes until bubbly. (Cover with foil if the cheese on top starts to get too cooked.)
