West Babylon Union Free School District fourthgraders joined their music teachers at the 5th Annual SCMEA PEAK (Parents, Educators and Kids) music festival at Northport High School. Ghosts Of Christmas Past By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

HOLIDAY HELP - Babylon Memorial Grade School’s student council members helped to brighten the holiday season for several local families by coordinating a weeklong food drive. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the school’s students, faculty and staff, many nonperishable canned and boxed items were donated to the worthy cause. All donations were made to the districtwide food collection effort to benefit local families in need.

The West Babylon School District has been examining the impact of declining enrollment. On Tuesday, January 7th, 2014, a study group comprised of community members and staff will present factual information to the Board of Education with regard to maximizing the utilization of school facilities in the future. The Board of Education meeting is scheduled to take place in the high school performing arts center at 7 p.m. Other items that have been under study include an analysis of current efficiencies and costsaving measures and the feasibility of a Pre-K program. All community members are invited to attend.

North Babylon High School student-musician Kevin White has been chosen to participate in the highly selective SCMEA All-County Instrumental Jazz Ensemble. Kindness Counts Recognizing that the best way to stop bullying is to foster positive interactions and acts of kindness among individuals, Babylon Elementary School adopted the mantra “kindness counts” to encourage and celebrate acts of kindness within the school. As part of the yearlong campaign, students have

taken a kindness pledge, promising to speak and act in caring ways, and received silicone bracelets that read It’s Cool To Be Kind and Kindness Starts With Me. To reinforce the messages of the program, teachers addressed each of the points noted in the pledge through readalouds and targeted roleplaying scenarios.

Additionally, students and staff members have been recording acts of kindness displayed by others on leaves and placing those on a kindness tree in the main lobby. Students who are caught being kind throughout the year will also receive “It’s Cool to Be Kind” stickers.

As part of the Common Core module on human rights, fifth-grade students at North Babylon’s Woods Road Elementary School studied the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and read the fictional story Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. Set in California during the Great Depression, the story tells the riches-to-rags story of Esperanza, who learns the valuable lesson that there are more important things in life than money. During their study, the fifth-graders sketched and paraphrased the articles of the UDHR and compared them to the story of Esperanza and her family. Taking their lesson on social studies one step further, teachers Denise Casale and Darren Lotter challenged the students to create skits from the novel. Working in small groups, the students drafted their skits, created scenery and

A winter tradition continued as the kindergarten students at North Babylon’s William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School participated in the annual reading of Chris Van Allsburg’s The Polar Express. “I am your conductor and today I am going to take you on a trip to the North Pole,” said Superintendent of Schools Patricia Godek. Dressed as the conductor from the novel, with Principal Norann McManus dressed as Mrs. Claus, Mrs. Godek read the story aloud as the kindergartners gathered together in their comfiest bathrobes.

After the story and a surprise visit from Santa Claus, the students worked with their parents to make gingerbread houses. Using milk cartons as a base, they created their houses using their imagination, plenty of

icing and candy. Afterwards, the students returned to class, where they discussed the plot, characters and setting of The Polar Express as part of the stories domain they’re currently studying.

To culminate a Common Core Learning Standards module on human rights, the fifth-graders at North Babylon’s Parliament Place Elementary School recognized the United Nations’ Human Rights Day on December 10th. Leading up to this day, the students studied the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and learned how those rights are demanded in some

countries and violated in others. “The module taught us that everyone has the right to a house, an education and affordable medical care,” said Matthew Kendall, a fifth-grader in Staci Manning’s class. “It’s important everyone has these rights because you need education to learn, a house for shelter and medical care in case you get sick.”
