Safety & Respect Suffolk County Police Department Officer Jeanne Osias visited Robert Moses Middle School in the North Babylon School District to discuss internet safety, cyberbullying prevention, and the importance of respect. In an interactive forum, Officer Osias conducted a PowerPoint presentation and spoke to students about becoming
model citizens and the responsibilities that come with it. She urged students to make smart decisions in an increasingly unpredictable digital age, and provided them with efficient methods to avoid online dangers. Officer Osias’ visit served as another important lesson in Robert Moses’ SAFETY & RESPECT - Suffolk County Police Department Officer Jeanne Osias ongoing character visited students at Robert Moses Middle School. The Staff of
My Night Before Christmas It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,

becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with
perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Testing Their Minds In an effort to further study just how powerful the human mind can truly be, Babylon Junior-Senior High School students enrolled within Dr. Mark Malaszczyk’s recently reintroduced Advanced Placement Psychology course were treated to a special visit from certified hypnotherapist and Babylon JSHS parent, Eileen Berry. During the workshop, Mrs. Berry shared information pertaining
to hypnosis, saying that most clients utilize hypnotherapy in order to change negative behaviors and maximize skills. Such factors that a client might need help with are assistance with quitting smoking, weight management and stress management. “A common misconception of hypnosis is that a person will be able to be controlled entirely,” said Mrs. Berry. “However, this is not true, as the
conscious mind will not allow an individual to do something that they know to be wrong.” After taking part in an activity that asked participants to concentrate on the swinging of a handheld pendulum, the class was asked to participate in a soothing mediation session to help ease their minds and prepare them for the rest of the day.

As part of the “Adopt A Police Officer” program, Suffolk County Police Officer Jeanne Osias visited with kindergarten students at South Bay Elementary School in the West Babylon School District for the second time this year. Officer Osias will be visiting once or twice a month throughout the school year to encourage
positive police interactions and develop a trusting relationship. During this visit, Officer Osias talked about her job and then read one of the students’ favorite December books, “Gingerbread Friends.” Following her visit, the students wrote stories and drew pictures about it in their journals.

Literacy Techniques Babylon Elementary School was recently selected to host a collaborative workshop for six educators from the Tuckahoe Common School District and share information about the district’s robust teaching techniques and approaches to literacy instruction. “Learning is a lifelong process,” said Babylon Elementary School Principal Travis Davey. “This collaborative meeting afforded our staff
the chance to collaborate with colleagues, offer perspectives and ideas, as well as spark a deeper conversation about the ways in which students learn.” Throughout the workshop, Babylon teachers modeled classroom lessons, met with the Tuckahoe representatives and shared information about how the district is working to strengthen literacy instruction at the
kindergarten through second-grade level. “Babylon is very enthused to share our instructional successes with other school districts,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “Hosting such visitations is a testament to the authenticity of the workshop model and to our staff’s commitment of delivering a well-rounded literacy experience to all children.”

In honor of International Human Rights Day, fifthgraders at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District wore decorative T-shirts that they created and participated in a silent
march as a culminating event to their lessons about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The fifth-graders depicted a variety of the 30 Articles, while students in lower grades around
the school watched them march. The activity served as a way for the students to learn, promote, protect and reaffirm these human rights with their peers.

Drance incorporated several students in the performance by breaking it up into eras. Each era featured a different duo of students playing Andy and Melissa, which served to give them each an opportunity to showcase their outstanding talents. “Within these letters, we learn about how their [Andy’s and Melissa’s] relationship grows and changes over time,” said Drance. “We also see a battle between writing and telephoning, each
form of communication personifying the characters and influencing the course of their relationship. I broke up the couple’s relationship into temporal chunks; the diversity of these pairs shows one universal truth: love endures over time.” Andy was played in different eras by Jason Valverde; Jacob Lesko; Anthony Perry; C.J. Boell; Noah Odige; Joshua Gibson; Jordan Bux; and Kriston Williams. Melissa was portrayed in different eras by Molly Battaglia; Kaitlin Meyers; Renée Agent; Amanda Zweibel; Annalise Dankenbrink; Christina Cotignola; Sofia Kachurka; and Kristina Scheid. “Love Letters” not only spotlighted students’ and staff members’ commitment to theatrical excellence, but also served as a riveting and entertaining showcase of their talents.
