Local artist Todd Arnett has been using his creativity on the grounds of Camp-Pa-Qua-Tuck by creating a wooden sculpture near Kaler’s Pond. The unnamed sculpture was carved out of an eleven-foot tall, 800-pound black cherry tree and made into a Phoenix. It was placed on a 5,000-pound illuminated base on November 10 at the camp. The sculpture was inspired by the ideas of Gail Saetta and Matt Russell, Bradstock Music Festival volunteers who have been organizing the festival at the camp annually and have been installing lights throughout the camp for the past two years. When it looked like Bradstock would no longer continue because another music venue was not able to present the festival any longer, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck offered to

hold it on their grounds three years ago. During that time, Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell became acquainted with the camp’s staff and volunteers and learned about its mission. They then began donating lights and installing them on the camp’s grounds. “One spring day when we were installing lights, Matt and I thought that adding something new to the camp would be a good idea in order to stimulate more creativity,” Ms. Saetta stated. “We thought about different types of objects and eventually, decided on a large sculpture.” Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell proposed the idea to Bridget Costello, the camp’s director. Ms. Costello concurred that an innovative, artistic sculpture would enhance the camp. They approached Mr. Arnett in June with ideas to incorporate a sculpture

into the camp after hearing about his immaculate wood carving abilities from a close friend. Mr. Arnett, Ms. Saetta and Mr. Russell began exchanging ideas about what type of sculpture

to create. After many conversations, the idea of a phoenix emerged. “The Phoenix sculpture symbolizes the rebirth of the music festival at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck and

Winter Walking Tips Falls account for more than one million injuries in the U.S. annually. There are four types of walking accidents with the most common being the slip and fall. That’s the type of fall that happens when you fall due a surface not cleared of snow or ice. “Every winter the hazards of driving in snow and icy conditions are noted, but rarely is walking

on snow and ice addressed,” said Martin B. Tirado, CAE, Executive Director of the Snow & Ice Management Association. “Slipping and falling while walking accounts for a large number of winter-related injuries and can have an impact on the quality of life for the injured person.” SIMA, the national nonprofit organization representing the snow

removal industry, has some tips on safe winter walking. TIP #1: Wear proper footwear. Proper footwear should place the entire foot on the surface of the ground and have visible treads. Avoid a smooth sole and opt for a heavy treaded shoe with a flat bottom. TIP #2: Accessorize to see and be seen. Wear sunglasses so that you can see in the reflective light

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will host a full-day Anger Management Workshop on Saturday, December 21st, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the agency’s Mineola office. The workshop provides participants with practical steps to address their triggers and learn how to manage their frustration in stressful situations. Throughout the month of November, 40 staff members from North Babylon High School and Robert Moses Middle School helped raise money and awareness for prostate cancer by participating in the annual Movember Charity Drive. Organized by high school teachers Michael Goetz and Victor Manzella as well as Richard Del Gaudio, the district’s mathematics curriculum associate, each participant donated $10 to become involved in the monthlong mustache-growing event

while also gathering donations from friends and family members. “Last year a few of us participated individually in Movember, but we decided this year to come together as a large group and raise funds for a good cause,” said Mr. Manzella. According to the U.S. Movember website, the charity encourages men to get involved in their health and aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, ultimately reducing the number of preventable deaths.

Noticing the new facial hair on their teachers’ faces, the students at NBHS and RMMS were excited to get in on the action and learn about the cause. To include the students in its fundraising efforts, each school sold fake mustaches on November 27th. In total, the Mo-Bros and Mo-Sistas collected more than $900 for the cause, which was donated in the name of NBHS teacher Diana Simulcik, whose son battled and beat testicular cancer.

volunteers - many of whom have served in the armed forces or who have family in the service - they were able to create care packages that included water flavoring, packages of mac & cheese, canned beef stew, instant mashed potatoes, popcorn, candy, writing paper and pens, and feminine hygiene products. The care packages were assembled over several days at American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon. Funds were raised to mail them to a specially-created address at the headquarters

of the 48th Fighter Wing in England, where they will be forwarded to their units’ base in Afghanistan. Local politicians from the Town of Babylon came out to support the drive and assist in the project. The Town of Babylon presented Post 1634 and the Sagtikos District with a proclamation recognizing their service and good deed to the service and the community. The district plans to do this annually, with the hopes of sending 500 care packages to an army unit overseas in 2014.

CHORES FOR CHARITY - Girl Scout Troop 2780 in North Babylon recently did a “Chores for Charity” activity, doing various chores at home to earn 25¢ to 50¢ for each over 2 to 3 weeks. With the total money collected by all the Girl Scouts in the Troop, they went on a scavenger hunt at Pathmark in North Babylon to complete the clues given to them by the Troop leaders, Carol Schierle and Melissa Beck, for items needed at the food pantry. The girls searched out the best prices so that they could buy the most items. Once all was collected and paid for, they donated all items to the North Babylon Town Food Pantry.
