One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet. I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough. But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and

the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week. Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters. And the stores. We all know

there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators. It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it. When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly? January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

Here is a beautiful little X-mas tree!” The child exclaimed and stroked the tree. “This is just the right size for me!” With a shovel, the two cut carefully loose The frosty earth around the spruce. They took it to their modest home. To be honored and cherished it had come.

CANDLELIGHT BALL - AHRC Suffolk held its 55th Annual Candlelight Ball on November 13th at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Roger Blaugh and Michael Forestano of Corcoran Real Estate were the honorees for the evening. It was a great success and fun was had by the over 400 guests present. The Candlelight Ball is AHRC Suffolk’s most profitable fundraiser raising vital funds for the programs and services they provide for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Suffolk County.

The Art League of Long Island invites artists from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens to submit entries to the upcoming juried competition “Motion in Art and Art in Motion” showing in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery March 28th through April 24th, 2016. An art work may incorporate actual motion; that is, the artwork itself moves in some way. Kinetic art is live movement that displays actual motion

state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars. This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured. I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster. It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming. The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time. Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end. If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today. If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles. The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum. Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history. I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school. Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard? Now, my school has changed a lot. Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.

Perfecting the Process Fourth-grade students in Ms. Montuori’s class at Parliament Place Elementary School in the North Babylon School District performed a mock trial before special guest Judge James McDonough of the Fifth District Court. Prior to the students’ presentation of the trial, Judge McDonough spoke

about his profession and answered questions. With each student playing a role in the trial, the class presented a case based on a story they read entitled “A Burst of Autumn Anger,” and presented the trial to a jury consisting of Judge McDonough, Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach and

Parliament Principal Drew Olson. The mock trial served as a way for students to exhibit what they have learned about the importance of a fair trial, court proceedings and the purpose of the different roles of law enforcement.

Cadettes. This ceremony represents a combined effort of over six hundred hours of volunteer work throughout the village and Town of Babylon. Among the volunteer projects were the planting of a garden at the Babylon Youth Center, organizing

and holding a walk to school day, collecting food for a local pantry, recycling markers, and collecting Halloween costumes for families in need. Deputy Supervisor Martinez thanked the scouts for their service and wished them well in their future endeavors.

In order to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout, candidates must satisfy a number of challenging requirements, chief of which is the service project. Therefore, for his service project, Jacob organized an impressive effort to increase the resilience of the area by planning three thousand beach grass plugs along the bulkhead. After taking root, these plants will help prevent future sand loss, in addition to adding a pleasant aesthetic element to the landscape. “Jacob is to be commended for his work, and Babylon Village is

stronger because of it,” said McCaffrey. “Although it has been 3 years since Superstorm Sandy ravaged our community, a lot of work still remains. In large part, it is because of innovative leaders like Jacob that we have been able to rebuild what was lost. New Partnership Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) announced that it has entered into a new partnership with the nonfor-profit BroadHollow Theatre Company in East Islip. The new program will be a symbiotic relationship between the Theatre Company and FREE wherein the theater will receive valuable help with their day-to-day operations and the individuals supported by FREE will gain valuable experience in the community. As part of this partnership, persons with disabilities will be offered the opportunity to explore and develop their full vocational potential. “We are so excited to enter into this partnership with the BroadHollow Theatre Company, who has long been a friend to FREE,” said Robert S. Budd, CEO for FREE. “We are pleased to be able to offer individuals

who participate in our theatre day program with opportunities to gain real world experience. It really shows them that anything is possible. I’m proud to be able to give them hope and help in making their dreams come true.” Participants in the program will have the opportunity to engage in local community interactions/relationships with merchants, and working on opportunities that enhance their skills. Training will focus on helping FREE’s men and women enhance their job skills through a community based initiative and at the same time allow FREE to support a local theater. The BroadHollow Theatre Company will benefit by enhancing the theater going experience for the community. A number of FREE’s men and women have been given the opportunity to work

as actors as a result of the training at BroadHollow Theatre. “Our partnership with FREE aligns itself well with one of the key points in our mission statement – ‘extending a helping hand to those charitable organizations assisting the communities that we serve,” said Robert O’Neill, Executive Artistic Director, BroadHollow Theatre Company. “Our collaboration enables those individuals with an interest in theatre arts to continue to develop their performance skills as well as job skills for opportunities behind the scenes. Eighth Graders at SSCM have ample opportunity to flex their creative muscles while developing teambuilding skills and learning to work cooperatively within a group. Mrs. Judy Keeler, veteran SSCM Middle School teacher uses a studentcentered reading strategy called Literature Circles. Student teams work together to select a book that they will read and then each student takes on a specific role in the “Lit Circle”, allowing the group to work together to analyze the story line and present

their take on the piece of literature they’ve read. Mrs. Keeler introduces the concept to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, the students’ presentations surely gain momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are in the reading process,

something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the works they are reading. Further, for these students preparing to make their way to high school within the coming year, the process also allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and take ownership of the outcomes of their study habits and collaborative work — life skills they will take with them for the long haul.

Business-Minded West Babylon Senior High School students Luis Alvarado-Rodriguez and Melanie Wolff, who are also enrolled in Western Suffolk BOCES’ Wilson Tech Program, recently placed first in the Huntington Chamber of Commerce’s annual

Business Leadership Competition. The two-member advertising and graphic design team competed for Wilson Tech against 350 entries from across Long Island and won for their creative logos, professional branding concepts and

poise. The high school seniors were tasked with designing a brand identity for Vammia, a fictitious new upscale women’s clothing company geared to ages 18-30, and presenting their design scheme to Long Island business leaders.
