Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living.

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options Mental Health Residential Programs provide supportive housing opportunities for Long Island residents recovering from serious mental illness under the auspices of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH). Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction.

Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the U.S. Options operates more than 50 scattered units of supportive housing for people living with HIV/ AIDS and provides additional Ryan White funded case management services for this vulnerable population. Affordable housing linked to services – provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people with the help they need to stay housed and live more independent, healthy and fulfilling lives. Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and household cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.) When to Abandon the “Thinking” Mind One cannot accomplish anything of great significance with the thinking mind in the way. As I sit down to write this week’s column, I notice that I am in my head, which will not do, so I turn my attention to Miles Davis’ Blue is Green song playing on my phone. The soothing rhythmic sound of jazz takes me out of my thinking mind and places my energy back to that intangible place where creativity is born. It’s between the dream-state consciousness and waking consciousness, where anything seems possible, and we do not question the validity of our ideas. While it’s true that our brain is the machine that powers and processes the application of practical knowledge, those magic “aha” moments that hit us seemingly out of nowhere and have the supernatural ability to transform our lives, make themselves known when we are doing just about anything other than “thinking.” If you’ve experienced this even once in your life, you surely know what I mean.

A 2016 article in The Atlantic, titled, “The Trippy State Between Wakefulness and Sleep” states, “There is a brief time, between waking and sleep, when reality begins to warp. Rigid conscious thought starts to dissolve into the gently lapping waves of early stage dreaming, and the world becomes a little more hallucinatory; your thoughts a little more untethered.” It’s that untethered state, when we forget about time and space, and who we are supposed to be, that we do not judge our ideas or our creative impulses. It’s similar to a young child’s state of consciousness, before they learn to be self-conscious and selfcritical. A January 2018 Wall Street Journal article titled, “For Babies, Life May Be A Trip,” states, “Fascinating new neuroscience research suggests that when adults dream or have psychedelic experiences, their brains are functioning more like children’s brains. It appears that the experience of babies and young children is more like dreaming

or tripping than like our usual grown-up consciousness.” She goes on to say, “Like most adults, I spend most of my waking hours thinking about getting things done. Scientists have discovered that when we experience the world in this way, the brain sends out signals along the established, stable, efficient networks that we develop as adults.” The part of the brain where adults tend to spend most of their waking hours will help keep you safe, get to work on time, and remember to pick up the dry cleaning, but it’s not your friend when it comes to living outside the box or taking creative risks. In order to experience life in a more dynamic, passionate and creative way, we need to develop strategies for breaking us out of the thinking, critical mind so that we are able to tap into the higher collective consciousness from where all creativity and inspired ideas flow forth. The object of Music Lovers Club, a non-profit organization founded in 1925, is to share an interest in and appreciation of music; to extend to others the pleasure derived there from, and to provide scholarships to outstanding musicians who are seniors in high school, residing in the townships of Babylon and Islip, for the purpose of fostering the continuation of their musical development.

The next free concert will be held on Monday, January 28, 2019 at 2:00 PM featuring “The Staller Trio.” All are welcomed after the concert to meet the artist(s) and enjoy light refreshments and a light food assortment. The event will take place at United Methodist Church, located at 350 Main Street/ Church Avenue in Islip. Music Lovers Club is always looking for new members. Membership is $35

Music Lovers Club for the year. Applications are available after each concert. Join Music Lovers Club for the scholarship concert competition early in the year. High School Seniors in the townships of Islip and Babylon compete, and monetary awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize winners. The celebration will follow on a Sunday some time thereafter at a moderate cost that is donated towards scholarships.

Annual Run for the Warriors loved ones and others who wanted to honor the sacrifices made by the members of our military overseas. A number of wounded veterans participated in the run, which included three routes of varied distances

(10K, 5K and 1 mile), by riding hand and foot cycles. Many participants honored loved ones in the military, some of whom gave the ultimate sacrifice, by carrying signs and American flags as they completed the course.

ANNUAL RUN FOR THE WARRIORS - Several local elected officials attended and even participated in the race, including Suffolk County Legislators Kevin McCaffrey and Tom Donnelly. Donnelly, a former Town of Babylon Councilman, organized the race during his time with the town. Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Clerk Gerry Compitello and Lindenhurst Village Mayor Mike Lavorata were also in attendance.

Babylon Students Shower Veterans with Love In an effort to showcase their admiration and respect for the nation’s veterans, Babylon Elementary School recently hosted their annual, music-filled “Patriotic Sing Along” in the school’s gymnasium. With assistance from Babylon Elementary School music teacher Eddie Storey, students

of all grade levels raised their voices in unison to sing their hearts out to patriotic anthems as Mr. Storey accompanied them on his guitar. During the course of the assembly, the students were joined by U.S. military veterans, Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini, district administration as well as students’ parents.

Additionally, the attendees were treated to a special surprise as they exited the gymnasium and entered the “Hall of Heroes,” as the school’s lobby was filled with decorative banners listing the names of family members who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
