Students in grades 4-7 throughout the North Babylon School District were treated to a special presentation of classic holiday play “A Christmas Carol” by Theatreworks USA. The performance, held at North Babylon High
School, was aligned with the English Language Arts curriculum as it is required reading for seventh-graders. In addition, students were provided with study guides containing vocabulary, the play’s historical contexts and thought-provoking
questions to consider. The district’s cultural arts funds covered the cost of the play. The performance was a fun and educational way for the district to ring in the holiday season and supplement classroom lessons.

Giving Thanks
Students in Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s 4th and 5th grades participated in an 8:30 a.m. Mass the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, gifting the community with their song, lecturing, reciting Native American poetry and more. They also collected pantry items so important
to families in need, especially at this time of year, when everyone wants to be able to celebrate the holidays as best they can, during a time when gratitude is so crucial to finding everyday happiness. The food items contributed by classrooms throughout the school will go to SSCM’s Parish
Outreach Program in Deer Park. Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social ministry on Long Island, where across the county, combined parish ministries include thousands of volunteers and serve as many as 75,000 people in need each year.

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so
much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.
And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

Through a fresh and current approach using tools such as music, videos and their new book “Decode Your Future,” they are able to reach a new audience of young women. “Senator Phil Boyle is the very first official that immediately grasped the urgency of implementing breast health education into schools and entrusted us with a grant to do so,” stated Donna Cioffi and Linda Bonanno, First Company Pink Cofounders. “Women of all ages in our Country will greatly benefit from it. Thank you is not enough for a man of his caliber; instead we will let our actions speak for us!” The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) is a nonprofit volunteer organization dedicated to various breast and gynecological cancer concerns. Founded in 1993, the BBCC continues to be a grass-roots organization, providing an array of patient support services, education and advocacy programs. One of their main missions at the BBCC is their “Lend a Helping Hand” program (LAHH). This program helps women and men diagnosed with breast and gynecological cancers, while in treatment, with assistance in transportation, medical bills, whatever the primary need may be. Karen Kunkel, President of the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition stated, “We love Senator Boyle’s passion for helping to fight the fight against breast cancer, we can really feel his true desire from within to help. It takes more than a village, sometimes it takes a township to help our Coalition strive. Only together can we accomplish our goals.” The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition was founded in early 1992 by Lorraine Pace after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Realizing that 20 people she knew, all of whom lived in her West Islip neighborhood, south of Montauk Highway, also had breast cancer. That spurred her crusade to call attention to breast cancer

Signing On As a result of their unwavering commitment both in the classroom and on the athletic field, four Babylon Junior-Senior High School seniors were recently selected to continue their athletic journeys at some of the nation’s premier schools this fall. In recognition of this honor, the seniors were joined by proud family members, district administrators and staff members as they put pen
to paper and signed letters of intent this November, whereby committing themselves to play collegelevel sports. “These young men and women are wonderful examples of today’s students who can effectively balance their academic studies while pursuing their athletic talents at a collegiate level,” said Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “We are very proud of
these fine young people representing Babylon High School.” Amongst those students who recently made their college commitments were Montana Craft (LIU Post/lacrosse), Gwendolyn Donaldson (SUNY Oneonta/softball), Kenneth Gordon (Flagler College/baseball) and Shaun Kaminski (SUNY Old Westbury/baseball).

Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s Joseph Traverso was the 2016 graduation “Class Speaker” and is currently enjoying his freshman year at St. Anthony’s H.S. in Huntington. Reminiscing over his time at SSCM from when he stepped through the doors of the school for his first day of Pre-K ten years ago, Joseph reflected upon how SSCM had prepared him, since day one, for the exciting
challenges ahead at St. Anthony’s. In Joseph’s own words, “SSCM’s teachers have taught me life skills I will never forget...even sacrificing their own afterschool time to help us prepare for our high school entrance exams.” Among an impressive list of accomplishments, Joseph was recognized during SSCM graduation, for excellence in science. He received awards for Altar Service and participating in School Band. He was the recipient of the Monsignor Rooney scholarship, a Parents Association scholarship, SSCM’s Senior Club scholarship and was the winner of the SSCM 2016 Cyrilian Award.
While exceeding academic expectations throughout his time at SSCM, Joseph simultaneously poured himself into a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Honor Band, Children’s Choir, Altar Service, Breakfast with Santa volunteers, holding leading roles in the school’s Drama Club and Shakespeare Festival performances and competing in SSCM’s Cross Country Team. A model student all around, Joseph’s academic history to date proves his formula for success to be Science + Shakespeare + Service + SSCM.
