Babylon Village is beautiful year round thanks to the efforts of our village, our highway department, the Beautification Society and the businesses that call the village home. The Christmas season is my personal favorite, as the village is transformed into a winter wonderland of lights, wreaths and garlands. During the many festivities, let us not forget the meaning of the celebration and particularly our neighbors in need. There is a wonderful program called The Giving Tree, sponsored by our village Chamber of Commerce. Stop by either Healthy Alternatives or Ooh-La-La

between December 6th and December 15th and choose an ornament containing a holiday gift wish from someone in a family less fortunate than many of us. Buy your special gift, and bring it to either location by December 20th. These are never extravagant wishes, but they will make someone’s holiday a time of joy! Healthy Alternatives also has their “Black Bag Fundraiser” underway. You can stop in to donate $15 for a children’s bag, or $20 for an adult bag. You will receive a surprise bag filled with goodies valued at least as much as your donation, and perhaps as much as $50! All proceeds go to the sponsored families!

Don’t miss the Dickens’ Winter Wonderland & Gingerbread House Contest on Friday, December 15th! Costumed Dickens characters and carolers will roam the village, spreading holiday cheer. Enjoy holiday classics on two giant screens. Visit with Santa & Mrs. Claus for a great photo session outside of Fitness Incentive on Deer Park Avenue. Don’t forget the Gingerbread House Contest. with Jamie Lynn Ryan Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog… so the slogan goes, stamped on every piece of Lindenhurst paraphernalia this side of Wellwood Avenue, and beyond. And it’s true. I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.

And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

as a mere dream back in September turned into victory parades through town and more recognition than any individual could have ever hoped to receive. Even still, it remains a team victory; no man above the rest, all united in their Lindy Pride. Browsing through some of the many videos shared on social media following the victory, I came across one that appeared to be posted immediately following, taken during the post-game meeting of coaches and players. As the head coach praised the outstanding accomplishments of the season, he made sure to mention the town, the people, the community they all called home - without them, he said, none of this would have been possible. And that, in the end, is the most humbling achievement of all. Seventeen years later, I remain a proud Bulldog. Always.

December Artist Babylon Village Arts Council is proud to present its December artist Susan Gromatsky at Sterling National Bank located at 180 West Main Street. The artist currently known as Q” obtained her pseudonym from the nickname “Susie Q.” When not painting, she creates other, useful art: hand painted seashell soap dishes; hand crocheted ponchos, shawls, and afghans; and beaded jewelry. “Q” grew up in the Philadelphia area and moved to Long Island over 35 years ago. She has lived in Dix Hills and Huntington, and now resides in Amityville. Her father still paints, and serves as a huge inspiration. He taught her to use oils at a very young age; after dabbling in airbrush, pen and ink, and colored pencil, she has also picked up acrylics after missing the feeling of holding a brush. See her exhibit at the bank during the month of December. BVAC is a 501c(3) organization.

Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. Café only offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Rosemarie mentioned that she values passion over experience in these areas because experience can always be gained! First graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park managed to fit in plenty of work and play in the short Thanksgiving week. They participated in a video conference on what it was like for the Pilgrims to sail to America on the Mayflower. It gave the students insight into what life was like in Plymouth and what skills they needed in order to survive. The class found it both interesting and informative and they rounded out their learning with some related hands-on activity, making

beaded bracelet the way Native American Indians would have long ago. SSCM held its annual Thanksgiving Feast for the students, and Mrs. McGerald’s first grade class was on the ready with a little added treat of their own, as they spent the morning working on Thanksgiving turkey cookies, complete with candy corn feathers! That afternoon, the students turned their attention to other animals, as the class science topic of the week centered around

amphibians, reptiles and fish! From reading to math to nature to cookie-crafting, the students enjoyed a very full week, indeed! Their next big venture will be continuing preparations for the annual pre-Christmas school Mass that the first grade presents each year. They’ve been practicing their readings and songs and will be ready to roll in time for their Mass on December 19th. On behalf of SSCM, we hope you all had a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving!
