“Slime Time,” “Strawberry DNA” and “M&M Survival.” Brookhaven National Laboratory conducted a microscope activity and Mad Science performed dry ice experiments with small groups of students. “Be An Einstein” station let students decorate their own lab coats to wear for all their STEM activities. In the technology wing, the National Technology Honor Society and Robotics Club showed off their robots, 3-D printers and printing pens, and woodworking capabilities. In the lobby, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County had a small pool with marine creatures in touch tanks for the students. All of the proceeds from the evening are used toward student scholarships.

Don’t wait until it’s time to go to bed to try and pray... • Make friends with Godly people. • Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand. • Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good “Thank You God.” • Laugh • Laugh some more! • Take your work sersiously, but not yourself at all! • Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).

Scientific Studies students reinforced skills that they will draw upon in subsequent labs this year, such as observations of physical characteristics of the lake and inferences regarding issues related to water quality. Additionally, forensics classes recently put the lessons they learned in the classroom to use as they were challenged to execute proper crime scene processing techniques to solve a mock murder in the courtyard. Under the guidance of Babylon School District Director of

Science Melissa Callahan, the students engaged in the hands-on activity while employing their critical thinking skills and deducing reasons to determine the parameters of the crime. Now in its 13th year, the school’s College Forensic Science course allows 11thand 12th-grade students to earn four college credits from Syracuse University. The course also provides students with a practical application of science as it pertains to analyzing criminal cases.

On Saturday, November 4th, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey attended an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Troop 1’s Patrick and Ryan Gaffney at the West Islip American Legion Hall. The ceremony focused on the efforts made by Patrick and Ryan Gaffney as well as their family, friends and fellow scouts to help the candidates achieve this honor. They were presented proclamations for their achievements by Legislator McCaffrey and Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez.

This process necessarily involves formulating a project idea, determining the required human and material resources and demonstrating unwavering leadership throughout the process. For his project, Ryan beautified the grounds, statue and sign at the St. Joseph’s Church in Babylon. For his project, Patrick completed a book drive at several locations over the span of two months to supply a new library and study center at St. Luke’s Church in Brentwood.

Food Tasting Recognizing the importance of a strong home-to-school connection, the Babylon School District Food Service Department recently held a “Parent Tasting” event at Babylon Elementary School to introduce the many current and future menu items that district students can enjoy courtesy of the

in-house chefs. “Food Service Director Nancy Pedrone and her team of chefs did an outstanding job in the preparation and presentation of sample menu items which were enjoyed by a good turnout of district parents,” said Babylon School District Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi.

After the tasting, an informative question and answer session was held, as the parents were able to inquire about the samples offered. Parents left the event feeling wellinformed about the healthy and delicious food being served throughout the district daily.

I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle. To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig. To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process

of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection. Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors. (And now, you, dear readers.) It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within. Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks. The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own. However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters.
