Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will. Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at

times, shouting in exasperation. “JUST PUT YOUR JACKET ON!” In reality, the thought of him getting sick, or even what the bus driver or teacher would think of me were my motivating factors for my panic. It was my own discomfort about the situation. What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that

you’re aware of how the whole process works.” He stared at me and let out a sheepish giggle. Slowly, he reached inside his backpack for his hat and placed the hat on his head for warmth. Then, as if to say, “I’m not doing this because you want me to. It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold. In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

Project Description: The Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR), an office of HCR’s HTFC, is responsible for the direct administration of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) CDBG-DR program in New York State. GOSR proposes to provide $1,285,000 of CDBG-DR funding to the Town of Babylon for Shoreline Stabilization and Road Improvements – Oak Beach Project, located at 144-221 Oak Beach Road, Oak Beach, Suffolk County, New York (the “Proposed Project”). Oak Beach Road is a single-entry road which becomes impassable during flood events due to its proximity to the inadequately protected shoreline. During Superstorm Sandy, part of the western edge of the road collapsed due to the destabilization of the shoreline and subsurface material. The Proposed Project includes the elevation and restoration of portions of Oak Beach Road. Two sections of the adjacent shoreline to the south of the road will be stabilized with stone revetments to prevent future erosion events from impacting the roadway. A planted soil berm will be constructed for stabilization between the roadway and the revetments. The berm will be connected to the stone revetment (using a geotextile fabric and armor stone) that will be anchored into a vegetated low sill bulkhead up to the mean high-water line. The two revetments are approximately 40 feet in length and total approximately 20,322 square feet. FINDING OF NO SIGNIFICANT IMPACT An Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Proposed Project has been prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and HUD environmental review regulations at 24 CFR Part 58. The EA is incorporated by reference into this FONSI. Subject to public comments, no further review of the Proposed Project is anticipated. HCR has determined that the EA for the project identified herein complies with the requirements of HUD environmental review regulations at 24 CFR Part 58. HCR has determined that the Proposed Project will have no significant impact on the human environment and therefore does not require the preparation of an environmental impact statement under NEPA. FINAL NOTIFICATION OF A PROPOSED ACTIVITY IN A 100-YEAR FLOODPLAIN This is to give notice that GOSR is conducting an evaluation as required by Executive Order 11988 and Executive Order 11990 in accordance with HUD regulations under 24 CFR 55.20 Subpart C - Procedures for Making Determinations on Floodplain Management and Protection of Wetlands, to determine the potential effects that its activity in a floodplain and wetland would have on the human and natural environment. There are three primary purposes for this notice. First, people who may be affected by activities in floodplains/ wetlands and those who have an interest in the protection of the natural environment have an opportunity to express their concerns and provide information about these areas. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently joined Babylon Town Officials and other dignitaries in honoring the commitment and ultimate sacrifice of Suffolk County Police Department First Precinct officers at the dedication and unveiling of a Police Memorial Monument in Lindenhurst. Spearheaded by Town of Babylon Councilman Terry McSweeney, the monument honors Suffolk County Police Department officers who served residents in the Town of Babylon and lost their

lives in the line of duty during their service. First Precinct Commanding Officer Inspector Kevin Kane, other police officers and representatives from the First Precinct, County and local officials and members of the public attended the unveiling on October 26th. The monument is housed in a colorful garden by a waterfall near the lake at Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst. Etched in stone on the monument are four Babylon police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during the 1970s: Detective Carmine

Macchia, Patrolman George Frees, Patrolman Frank Cataldo and Officer William DeRosa. “This beautiful public memorial is a demonstration of our appreciation and respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting the safety and well-being of our community,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I thank Councilman McSweeney for recognizing the need to honor these fallen officers, ensuring that they will never be forgotten.”

The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups.

The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations and financial donations are always welcome and The Book Fairies is in need of corporate sponsors. STEM DAY - Hands-on learning activities took place throughout the day on Nov. 13 when West Babylon Junior High School held its STEM Day during science classes. Select students helped to lead classroom lessons, defining vocabulary and sharing STEM-related activities in all grade levels. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can’t do anything about a situation, forget it. 12. Live within your budget; don’t use credit cards for ordinary purchases. 13. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc. 14. KMS (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble. 15. Do something for the Kid in You every day. 16. Carry something inspirational with you to read while waiting in line. 17. Get enough rest. 18. Eat right. 19. Get organized so everything has its place. 20. Listen to a tape while driving that can help improve your quality of life. 21. Write down thoughts and inspirations. 22. Every day, find time to be alone. 23. Having problems? Talk to God on the spot. Try to nip small problems in the bud. Don’t wait until it’s time to go to bed to try and pray...24. Make friends with Godly people. 25. Keep a folder of favorite scriptures on hand. 26. Remember that the shortest bridge between despair and hope is often a good “Thank You God.” 27. Laugh. 28. Laugh some more! 29. Take your work seriously, but not yourself at all! 30. Develop a forgiving attitude (most people are doing the best they can).

Babylon Beach House Residents Members of Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Distributive Education Clubs of America helped facilitate a pumpkin painting event held at the Babylon Beach House on October 20th. Under the direction of DECA member Erin Corcoran, a Babylon DECA member for three years as well as an active Girl Scout, the students helped residents decorate and paint pumpkins in celebration of the fall season. The students also

handed out snacks and drinks to the residents. DECA is a cocurricular, national business organization with more than 150,000 students which reinforces the skills students learn in their business classes, including, but not limited to, marketing, accounting, human resources, sales and other business subjects. Scott Lockwood, owner of the Babylon Beach House, graciously asked Babylon’s DECA students to return and participate

in additional community service events throughout the course of the school year. Additionally, Mr. Lockwood invited Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s accounting class to visit and get a behind the scenes look at the business operations of his successful business. DECA is Babylon’s largest extra/co-curricular club and has dedicated its time and resources to helping out in the community for more than 19 years.

Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.
