Day of the Dead
abylon School District students in Michelle Scharff’s, Laura Jayne’s and Marianne Shaw’s Spanish classes learned about and celebrated the Day of the Dead. Students made masks, crafted sugar skulls and created an “ofrenda,” an altar that honors a loved one who has passed away. The high school’s Spanish classes learned that Mexicans celebrate life through the holiday by honoring their deceased loved ones.

Student Spotlight TRAVELING BACK IN TIME TO THE 1920’S SUBMITTED BY: KRISTIN DITRANO, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
On October 27th, Fairfield School, also known as Massapequa Avenue School, turned ninety. The fifth and sixth grade gathered together and learned about our school and how special it truly is. At the end of the ceremony, the historical society unveiled an historical marker. Some things I learned about the early days of our school are: there weren’t houses surrounding our school like today; there were open fields with cows. I also learned the kids didn’t ride on the bus to school; they walked, rode a bike or road in a carriage pulled by a horse, if they were lucky. Fairfield School only had one room that held multiple grades. The last thing I learned was a classroom could have up to 30 children but only have one teacher.
An Ode to My Human “Tis the time of year to be thankful, and I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Human, as I’ve been told by many fans that I am far too tough on her, what with my lack of fancy accommodations and inconsistent feeding schedule. I suppose I have been a bit harsh in my criticisms. Us bettas tend to have one-track minds, you know. In truth, I do appreciate the love and attention she shows me – and she has been better of late with notifying me when dinner is going to be delayed. Speaking of, I hear there’s a large meal coming up – a Thanksgiving, I believe it’s called – where humans

Maybe if I sit at the table and stare at their plates, someone will drop a morsel into my bowl. One can only hope. There I go again, with my culinary obsession. Tiny brain, eyes-bigger-thanstomach. Typical fish. But seriously, a sincere thanks to all my loyal followers who constantly write in to my

As you can see, the 1920’s was a challenging time because of the crash in the stock market. This major event will be put down in history just like our school was on October 27th.

In the 1920’s, Sebastian Hilton invented a contraption that changed the life of many children. This contraption was invented in Chicago, where Sebastian and his mathematical father lived. The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Twenty-Nine (329) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the more than nine hundred (900) students in eight (8) NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than onethird of the total number of students selected for All State. Approximately nine hundred (900) students from high schools across New York State will perform in eight ensembles, and professional development related to music education will be offered to approximately 1,200 attendees. Several school ensembles will be featured, and Glenn Nierman, President of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) will deliver the keynote address. NYSSMA’s featured artist will be Triton Brass. Members of this exciting Internationally-renown musical quintet has been artists-in-residence at both the Tanglewood Institute and The Boston Conservatory, where each has served as on the faculty. “As NYSSMA celebrates its eightieth All State Conference, we are proud to partner with the city of Rochester for the eighteenth year in a row,” said Dr. David Gaines, NYSSMA President. “Music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals. Mighty Maya’s Story
Dear Community, I am writing this letter to ask for your prayers and any help you can give to beautiful “Mighty” Maya, who was born June 17th, 2015 with a rare neurological disorder called Hemimegalence phaly. This disorder causes catastrophic epileptic seizures that, in time, could severely debilitate Maya’s cognition and even kill her. Anti-seizure medi cation will not work to control her seizures. The only way to help Maya live a productive and fulfilling life is to have her undergo radical surgery, a hemisphe rectomy, that disconnects the “bad” half of her brain. Maya’s parents are asking for donations to be used toward the cost of everything associated with Maya’s journey, from travel, to medical needs, to physical and occup ational therapy, among other expenses. We know that Mighty Maya is stron g enough for the challenges ahead and we thank you for helping her get there by either spreading the word and donating to her cause. At the age of only four months, Maya had her brain surgery on October 28th, to disconnect the “bad” half of her brain , at Boston Children’s Hospital. After being in ICU for a number of days, Maya is now recovering in inpatient care, where she started receiving physi cal therapy soon after her brain surgery. I am writing this letter to ask you for your help for Mighty Maya and her parents. Stacking the Competition More than 600 West Babylon School District students joined hundreds of schools around the world as they participated in the 10th annual World Sport Stacking Association Stack Up Day on November 12th. Organized by members of the physical education
departments in each of the buildings, students signed up to take part in the event, which included 30 minutes of stacking in an attempt to set the new Guinness World Record for speed stacking cups. At West Babylon Junior High School, South Bay and John F. Kennedy
elementary schools, students stacked cups of all sizes in various assigned pyramids, went head to head against the clock to beat their fastest time, competed in relays and participated in a variety of fitness-related activities.
BOE Recognized During its November meeting, the Babylon School District Board of Education was recognized by students and administrators. In honor of New York State Board Recognition Week, members of the district’s Board of Education were offered unique and thoughtful tokens of appreciation. Babylon Elementary School Principal Jessica
Kemler presented the Board with a book filled with pictures and stories done by elementary students about their favorite places in school and why they love their school. Babylon Memorial Grade School Principal Steve Goldberg introduced a video showcasing the students’ artistic, research and technological skills. Grade school students
created a work of “heart,” which they then presented to the Board members. Babylon Junior-Senior High School Principal Al Cirone introduced flutists from the wind ensemble who played “Edelweiss” from “The Sound of Music,” while Babylon’s SEPTA made a donation to the Babylon Community Scholarship Fund in each board members’ name.

Day of the Dead Babylon School District students in Michelle Scharff’s, Laura Jayne’s and Marianne Shaw’s Spanish classes learned about and celebrated the Day of the Dead on November 2nd. Students made masks, crafted sugar skulls and created an “ofrenda,” an altar that honors a loved one who has passed away. “This is a Mexican celebration that perfectly exemplifies the Spanish
influence on indigenous traditions,” Mrs. Scharff said. “Our language classes are taught with culture infused into each lesson and this time of year, we teach level appropriate lessons on the traditional celebration of Day of the Dead.” The high school’s Spanish 4 classes learned that Mexicans celebrate life through the holiday by honoring their deceased

and staff interviewed veterans in their families and completed a brief biography page with details regarding the veterans’ military service. Deceased veterans were also included through family history interviews. The biographies were
hung in the school lobby to create a wall of honor. The school also collected items for the Long Island Blue Star Moms NY6 organization, which will be boxed and sent overseas to active duty members of the military.

Remembering Local Veterans West Babylon Senior High School students, staff, faculty and district administrators gathered with local veterans for a Remembrance Day ceremony coordinated by West Babylon High School librarian Patricia Neville on November 12th. Working together with their family and members of the local community to gather personal photos and memorabilia, students constructed a Wall of Honor for those who served in the military.
After handing out red poppy flowers to attendees, the ceremony began with West Babylon Senior High School student Paige Leddy singing “The StarSpangled Banner.” West Babylon Senior High School Principal Dr. Ellice Vassallo spoke to attendees about the importance of remembering Veterans Day. After high school student Louie Mazza recited the poem “In Flanders Fields,” students Gionna Second, Anthony Antonetti and
Niko Scarlatos spoke about the school’s alumni honor plaque, the Wall of Honor and the Veterans Tree. West Babylon High School student Lauren Prendergast closed out the ceremony with “God Bless America.” Last month, 10th-grade honors English classes interviewed veterans and wrote essays about their experiences. The essays were complied into a Veterans Day book, handed out to veteran attendees after the ceremony.
