Students Design LEGO Self-Portraits North Babylon fifth graders at Parliament Place recently discussed what it would be like to work as a designer at The LEGO Group. Students were challenged to be as creative as possible while still adhering to the LEGO figurine template.
Using colored pencils, crayons and markers, they transformed LEGO silhouettes into selfportraits by adding unique features, including hair, personalized outfits and accessories. Students also added backgrounds to their drawings to enhance their
self-portraits and bring them to life. Art teacher Christina Kampson was thoroughly impressed by the students’ creativity and imagination. “Great work by all our fifth graders,” she said.

The Babylon Beautification Society is accepting volunteers for their annual Holiday Lamppost Decorating, which takes place on Sunday, November 29, 2020. Decorating will take place from 10:30 a.m. – 3:00p.m The event takes place, rain or shine. All materials are provided, just bring a ladder. Most volunteers decorate between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Note: it takes approximately 30 minutes to decorate one lamppost Each year over 1,000 volunteers decorate the lampposts throughout Babylon Village and within a few hours, the village is transformed into a holiday wonderland. In the past, they have
fully funded the event, however, this year all of the fundraising events were canceled due to COVID-19. To offset expenses, there will be a nonrefundable cost of $20, per lamppost to decorate. The Babylon Beautification Society provides all of the decorations (tree roping, lights, red bows) and volunteers are required to provide their own ladder and holiday spirit. You must sign-up in

Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYork-Presbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty surrounding the

pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations, but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation of the way people donate blood has changed. The
convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of

The Ever Present Absence
When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of everyday. We mourn. We cry. We learn to cope with the loss; of their physical presence, their encouraging words, their love and support. During the first year we are without our parent, spouse, sibling or child, we are aware of their absence every day. But, during special events such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc. we are intensely aware of their absence to the print the entire event can be saddened because of our grief. But, as time goes on we learn to cope with and accept our loss. However, the absence of our loved one remains with us forever. It may be five years or fifty years after our loved one has left us, but we are still conscious of their absence from our lives and we acknowledge their absence in so many different ways; a silent prayer, a private thought or a tear we blame on allergies or the wind. But as we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, our sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here.” Acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives. Not despairing, for we hope to meet again, just in that moment realizing their ever present absence from our lives.

Operation New Dawn, Operation Enduring Freedom and for Active Duty Service Members. It’s not always easy to ask for help, but the benefits of doing so outweigh the fear. One military member who received help from this organizaiton mentioned the following, “For someone in the military like me, it’s hard to swallow my pride and ask for help. This was a safe environment to open up in. Similar to many other organizations, volunteers are the backbone of Pal-O-Mine. Please note, all students, volunteers and staff must complete, sign and submit a Health Screening Questionnaire prior to coming to Pal-O-Mine. Pa l - O - M i n e Equestrian is a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations that was founded by Lisa Gatti. Located at 829 Old Nichols Road in Islandia, Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week. This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with stateof-the-art footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.They also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Pal-O-Mine wants you to know just how they can help those who have served in our military, along with those who are still serving our nation. For more than four thousand years, horses have been an integral part of warfare. Today, horses are still playing an important role in war, this time in the recovery of military veterans who have suffered emotional and/ or physical injuries. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is an EAGALA Designed Military Program.This designation asserts that EAGALA Certified Professionals working with the military have specialized training and experience in the military community. Sessions at the farm are action, not talk and they offer individual, group and family sessions. Pal-O-Mine offers programs to Verterans from Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan and for Service men and women who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,

Enhanced Good Samaritan Pediatric Sleep Center Open To help children overcome sleep disorders, Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) Good Samaritan Pediatric Sleep Center in Babylon has reopened following an extensive renovation project. While most sleep centers in the nation see adults and pediatric patients in the same location and setting, Good Samaritan Pediatric Sleep Center is devoted to the treatment of children in need of sleep studies. A dedicated sleep center for adults is located on the campus of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. The 4-bed center now features new furniture, childfriendly artwork, freshly painted walls, colorful linens and an animal theme on the door of each room. Other amenities include a sleep area for parents, large televisions in each room, updated lighting and new window treatments. Dedicated to helping children who are experiencing disrupted sleep, experts at the Good Samaritan Pediatric Sleep Center said up to 5% of youngsters suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Common symptoms of OSA include snoring, pauses in breathing, mouth breathing, restless sleep, teeth grinding and bedwetting. Untreated,
OSA can impact proper weight gain and growth and lead to behavioral and learning problems. “Sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and early detection and treatment of sleep disorders is very important for a child’s health and well-being,” said the Center’s Pediatric Medical Director and Pediatric Pulmonologist Dmitriy Vaysman, MD. “Studies have shown that children who get an adequate amount of sleep regularly have improved attention, behavior, memory, and mental and physical health.” Dr. Vaysman said that the proper amount of sleep for children differs depending on age. For example, infants need 12 to 16 hours of sleep, school-age pre-teens need between 9 to 11 hours of sleep while teenagers need between 8 and 10 hours of sleep. Diagnosis of childhood sleep issues is done through a consultation with a Pediatric Center Sleep specialist and then an overnight stay for testing in one of the sleep center rooms. Parents stay with their child. No invasive equipment is used and the testing involves measuring breathing, brainwaves and limb movement. The most common treatment for obstructive sleep
disorders in younger children are removal of tonsils and adenoids to open the airway. If other comorbidities are involved, modes of therapy could include nightly treatment with a CPAP machine. “Most people only think of adults when discussing sleep services, but children should not be snoring on a nightly basis,” said CHS’s Director of Sleep Services Brendan Duffy, RPSGT. “Our Pediatric Sleep Center is available to Long Island families to allow our children to get the treatment they need.” For more information on the Good Samaritan Pediatric Sleep Center or to make an appointment call (631) 321-2100.
