Veterans Day in October? For a short time, according to Military.com, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October — the first being October 25, 1971. However, many people did not agree with this
decision, continuing to honor the holiday on the original date. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law that returned Veterans Day to November 11, beginning in 1978. Since then parades, memorial events, volunteer efforts and other celebrations revolving around veterans have been held on November 11.

Veterans Day begins with Armistice Day Veterans Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars.

Hundreds walked to support the fight against Alzheimer’s and raise funds for the 50,000 Long Islanders living with the disease at the second annual “Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park” hosted by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) and the Town of Babylon. The walk took place at the AFATown of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park at Babylon Town Hall. The walk raised more than $30,000 to support services for Long Island families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease, as well as research toward better treatment and a cure. AFA is currently funding Long Islandbased research projects at Stony Brook University, NYU Winthrop Hospital and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. “We’re extraordinarily grateful to everyone who took part in this event,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., President and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. “Seeing the enthusiasm and eagerness of all those involved in the walk was inspiring. A very heartfelt ‘thank you’ to our great partners at the Town of Babylon, the volunteers, sponsors and walkers for making a difference!” Students from Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Amityville and Half Hollow Hills School Districts served as volunteers at the walk. upon a tower building team Based upon a theory explained exercise in an effort to in a TED Talk by author Tom strengthen their problem- Wujec, students had 18 minutes solving skills. to build a tower with a limited number of supplies such as spaghetti, masking tape, string and marshmallows, with the objective to build the highest tower with the marshmallow resting on top. According to Mrs. Reilly, this exercise proved to be a lot of fun for the students, and simultaneously helped to illustrate how much work is involved in problem-solving and product development.

Students Practice Fire Safety
In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, Babylon Memorial Grade School participated in a series of workshops courtesy of the Babylon Fire Department. Followed by the talk, the students were led outside where they were greeted by nearly a dozen firefighters and took an up close look at the different tools they use during an emergency. As a special treat, they also watched as Assistant
Principal Lauren Fretto displayed her fearlessness by traveling up into the sky while standing securely in one of the fire engines’ aerial ladders. During the program the presenters also spoke about the importance of wearing a helmet while bike riding and demonstrated how the jaws of life are used to remove a complete car door during an emergency.

school’s marching band. Cheerleaders from eighth grade to seniors piled into the back of pickup trucks, while members of the different classes showed off their float creations. Members of the swim team, boys and girls crosscountry teams and the elementary schools were all represented in the parade. Prior to the start of the game against Hauppauge High School, senior football players and cheerleaders were escorted out to the field with their parents to be
recognized. Members of the homecoming court were announced and took to the field for a photo opportunity. It was Eagles verses Eagles in an evenly matched game with a score of 6-6 through the first half. Neither team scored in the third quarter and both teams went into the fourth quarter gearing up for the win. Ultimately, West Babylon came up a bit short in the end and was defeated 19-13. The halftime performance by the school’s marching band was themed “007” after

Senior High School hosted the homecoming dance later in the evening. The school’s king and queen – Jack Rankin and Emma Weis – were officially crowned at the dance.
