Taking the first steps to address the schools’ significant facilities and infrastructure needs, the Babylon School District Board of Education has unanimously approved a bond resolution outlining a major facilities improvement plan. With the Board’s approval, the $26.6 million project will now be put before voters on Tuesday, December 10th. If approved by the community, each of the district’s three schools will see aging building systems replaced or renovated. The plan includes upgrades to roofs, heating and ventilation systems, electrical systems, and numerous other areas of building integrity. Projects will also address significant health, security and safety needs, as well as ADA compliance factors. Instructional spaces, including science labs, technology workshops and art classrooms, will receive upgrades to meet the district’s curriculum focus on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. The high school’s antiquated band room, chorus room and ancillary spaces will also be completely renovated and major updates will be made to Rowe Hall, which is not only used regularly by students but the larger community. Locker rooms at the high school will be revamped and the gym spaces at the high school and grade school will also be addressed. Major upgrades to athletic fields are also included in the proposed project. “Funding for the types of repairs and upgrades needed districtwide simply are not possible as part of our annual operating budget,” said Board of Education President Roger Katz. “By packaging our needs together through a bond, we will not only be able to effectively address current realities but also do so through a means of prudent financing.” The total anticipated

Homecoming Celebration way. The high school marching band performed while the student floats made their way down the street. The senior and sophomore classes created a city landscape while the junior and freshmen classes made a beach and ocean landscape. Following the student floats were the members of the homecoming court, including Homecoming King John Modica and Queen Madeline Vasquez, and the West Babylon cheerleaders. The parade came to an end when it reached West Babylon Junior High School for the homecoming football game. First it was small groups of college Journalism students at my alma mater, then it progressed to high school newspaper staffs at an awards ceremony… and now add an elementary school newspaper club to my public speaking repertoire. Who would have thought? There was a time when the mere mention of the dreaded words, “oral presentation,” would strike a chord of fear deep within. As soon as the syllabus for the year was handed out back in high school and college, the anxiety began. What would I say? Would I use note cards and attempt to ad lib? Should I write out each word and read from it, never daring to glance up or make
eye contact with my audience? What if I just “winged” it, as they say, and worked it all out on the spot? Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college
students are these days. Me. Of all people. They must assume I can intelligently speak on things of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

On October 24th, St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center’s Therapeutic Recreation Department hosted their 20th Annual Haunted House. Staff from all departments dressed up in Haunted Memory Lane themed costumes to surprise and entertain the residents. Families, residents and staff explored the haunted maze while trying to avoid the snakes, spiders and ghouls. This is an annual tradition which the residents and staff look forward to every year. It’s the coming together of the staff for the purpose of giving the residents a special day which makes St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center a unique and special place to live.

and friends were invited to attend the ceremony and join in the fight against drugs. Everyone was asked to wear RED on this day to support this worthy cause, and to bring attention to the importance of this pledge. Throughout the week, the school is decorated and each day the students received takehome reminders about being drug-free. They encouraged the students to wear their JFK spirit wear or their favorite team apparel to help “Team Up Against Drugs,” on October 25th. The week was a success.

The Board of Education of Babylon Union Free School District, Suffolk County, New York, HEREBY GIVES NOTICE that a Special District Meeting of the qualified voters of said School District will be held at the Babylon Memorial Grade School, 169 Park Avenue, in Babylon, New York, in said School District, on December 10, 2013, at 6:00 o’clock A.M., Prevailing Time, for the purpose of voting by voting machine upon the proposition hereinafter set forth. Polls for the purpose of voting will be kept open between the hours of 6:00 o’clock A.M. and 9:00 o’clock P.M., Prevailing Time.
RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of Babylon Union Free School District is hereby authorized to reconstruct and construct improvements to school district facilities, including field improvements, as well as other site improvements, at a maximum estimated cost of $26,600,000, including costs incidental thereto; and that such sum, or so much thereof as may be necessary, shall be raised by the levy of a tax upon the taxable property of said School District and collected in annual installments as provided by Section 416 of the Education Law; and in anticipation of such tax, obligations of said School District shall be issued.

BVAC Events The Babylon Village Arts Council is excited to announce its November events, starting with its opening 2nd Thursday Concert on November 14th in its new venue: the American Legion Hall at 22 Grove Place. Featured group, Bobtown, draws on field hollers, gospel music, folk songs, pop melodies and bluegrass harmonies to the 21th century. Bobtown has reinvented choral music to create a unique and compelling blend of voices and instruments that move gracefully between elegy and celebration. This free concert begins at 8 p.m.
BVAC’s featured Rotational Artist at Astoria Federal Saving at 180 W. Main Street, Babylon is Kathy Cunningham, an artist/art educator who has lived in West Islip for 28 years. She recently retired from teaching art for 31 years in the North Merrick Public Schools. She also taught art at Taipei American School, Taiwan. She has been published numerous times in School Arts and Arts & Activities magazines and is a member of the American Press Association.
