Class of 1947). “Today’s honorees’ deeds and characters exemplify outstanding achievement in their life’s work and/or service to their communities,” said Babylon School District’s Superintendent of Schools Linda Rozzi. “We believe the recipients of this honor stand as shining examples for current, as well as future, Babylon generations and are looked up to as people to someday emulate.” Following the ceremony, the local community organizations joined together with the members of the Babylon School District for a homecoming parade filled with a sea of orange through the streets. The crowd cheered as the youngest members of the football and cheerleading organizations joined together with the members of the varsity squads. The homecoming royalty paraded through in convertible cars and

waved at the crowd. This year’s floats were themed to represent the elements – fire, water, wind and earth – and at halftime, the senior class was recognized with the best float award for their fire display. For the football game, the Panthers played host to Hampton Bays. The Baymen were able to secure one touchdown in the first quarter but after that, the game belonged to the Panthers. Babylon took the homecoming victory 41-6. The Babylon cheerleaders dazzled the crowd with their performance throughout the game and during halftime, followed by a performance by the members of the band. To conclude the halftime festivities, the members of the homecoming court were recognized. Luca Giammarino and Lily Hagan were crowned homecoming king and queen, respectively.

Beautiful fall weather ushered in the homecoming festivities for the Babylon School District on Oct. 23. Starting with a pep rally on Friday, the Saturday celebrations began with the Athletic Wall of Fame inductions of Robert Mayo, Hans Wiederkehr and the 1997 Long Island champion varsity football team. Following the athletic inductions, the fifth annual Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame celebration commenced at Babylon Junior-Senior High School’s Rowe Hall, where four new members were inducted. This year’s honorees included Wayne Horsley (retired NYS elected official/Class of 1968), the late Thelma “Butterfly” McQueen (actress and Daytime Emmy Award winner/ Class of 1929), Bert Pedersen (businessman and entrepreneur/Class of 1951) and the late Robert Weeks (U.S. Navy captain/

Students Learn About Fire Safety The West Babylon Fire Department visited John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District for Fire Prevention Month and conducted outdoor assemblies for all K-5 students on Oct. 19. Students were able to see how firefighters put on their gear. They learned about how firefighters use their trucks to fight fires. Students also learned about how firefighters use special tools like the jaws of life to save lives. Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Town Clerk Gerry Compitello recently gathered with Village of Babylon Mayor Mary Adams and Deputy Mayor Frank Seibert at the Babylon Village Pool as the Town of Babylon Department of Environmental Control (DEC) transplanted a batch of live hard clams into the Great South Bay. Throughout the month of October, DEC has been transplanting thousands

of live hard clams into the bay as part of the annual Hard Clam Program. The program, which began in 1986 is an annual initiative meant to restock the area of the Great South Bay known as Spawner Sanctuary. The location was picked based of a study conducted by Stony Brook prior to 1986 and the overall intention of the program is to place adult clams in specific areas where they will spawn. As such, a higher incidence of

fertilization will result in more clams. “The clam population is currently spread so thin that we don’t get the fertilization in the water that we used to get back in the day,” said Waterways Management Supervisor Brian Zitani. “Our goal is to try and manifest natural reproduction among clams with the hope of helping to increase the population size.”

Davey Takes On New Administrative Role

WEST BABYLON CELEBRATES HISPANIC HERITAGE - Students in Mr. Ruiz’s Spanish classes at West Babylon Senior High School recognized Hispanic Heritage month in October by competing in various educational games. Babylon School District has appointed Travis Davey as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. He began transitioning into the role during the summer but was officially appointed to the position on Oct. 18. Since 2016, Mr. Davey has served as the principal of Babylon Elementary School. Prior to that, he was principal at Bellport Middle School and Brookhaven Elementary School, located in the South Country School District. Mr. Davey holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Psychology, a Master’s of Arts in

TRAVIS DAVEY Education (elementary education) and a Master’s of Arts in Educational Administration, all from The University of Notre Dame. He also holds

certifications in New York State in School Building Leadership and School District Leadership. “I look forward to working in this new capacity with the administration, staff, students and families here in Babylon,” Mr. Davey said. “I feel extremely fortunate to be part of a district that collaborates and supports one another in the way that we do here to provide the best opportunities for our students. Copiague and Amityville Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire in Copiague. Under the command of Copiague Department Chief Dominick Nuzzi, Copiague 1st Assistant Chief Kyle Miller donned his gear and made entry to search for possible occupants. Chief Miller was met with advanced fire conditions, battling high heat, low visibility and no hand line yet in place to extinguish the blaze. Chief Miller successfully located an occupant within the structure and began his efforts to remove them. Chief Miller’s efforts were

aided by Copiague 2nd Assistant Chief Danny Broyles and Amityville 1st Assistant Chief Gavin Budde who together helped Chief Miller in successfully rescuing the occupant. Once the patient was deemed stable, Amityville’s ambulance crew transported them to a local hospital, and while in route, reported that they had an alert and breathing patient. Thank you to Chief Nuzzi, 1st Assistant Chief Miller, 2nd Assistant Chief Broyles and 1st Assistant Chief Budde for their heroic actions. The Town of Babylon is forever grateful!
