Starting with a pep rally the night before, students showed off their school spirit with dance and cheer performances. Even though the floats didn’t get to parade around the community due to the weather, all the hard work of the classes was still recognized in the high school lot on Monday morning.

In Our 32nd Year

Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms flailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very first dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

Art of Giving John LaVelle, a North Babylon High School Class of 2003 graduate and teaching artist, visited the district to lead a twoday, hands-on workshop designed to help students carve and paint pumpkins for a charity event. LaVelle, who collaborated on the project with art teachers Theresa Marchionna, Rose

Whalen and Veronica Murphy, visited Robert Moses Middle School the first day and the high school the second day. On October 21st, the Performing Arts Support Association will be sponsoring its first “Pumpkin Walk” at William E. DeLuca Elementary School. All

members of the school district and community are invited to take a fall stroll, play games and enjoy autumn treats while they bid on their favorite pumpkins. Admission is $5 per person, $4 for PASA members, and children 4 and under are admitted for free; all proceeds benefit art students’ scholarships.

Fifty-six current and former students from North Babylon High School have earned the prestigious designation of Advanced Placement Scholar from the College Board due to their outstanding achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement exams. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on a student’s performance on AP exams. One student was recognized as a National AP Scholar. Seven students were named AP Scholars with Distinction. Ten students were named AP Scholars with Honor, and 38 were designated as AP Scholars. National AP Scholar One student qualified for the National AP Scholar award by receiving an average of at least 4 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. This student is Alonzo Tabada.

AP Scholars with Distinction Seven students received AP Scholar with Distinction awards by earning an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Forum Held A s s e m b l y m a n Joseph Saladino joined Superintendent of Babylon Schools Mrs. Linda Rozzi, Village of Babylon Mayor, Nassau and Suffolk officials to protect children from sexual predators. The Sex

Offender Forum addressed the questions of more than 100 concerned parents. The Forum was held in response to Babylon Village officials recently learning that a level 3 sex offender was residing

across the street from two schools. By the time this information was received the individual had already moved. However, because he was no longer on probation or parole by law he was within his rights to

live near to the schools. This poses a great concern to the community and the elected officials determined to protect children from sex offenders. The Assemblyman participated on the panel

speaking of the specific legislation he sponsored and his efforts to support municipality’s rights to address sex predator issues directly within their communities. The Assemblyman urged

individuals to support his efforts by signing an online petition supporting his bill at http://tinyurl.com/ SexOffenderPetition2016.
