The Charity of the Month for October is

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was founded in 1985. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

They are currently looking for volunteers who are organized, fun and dedicated to sort and display items at the Boutique. Even giving just a few hours of your time can be a huge help. Additionally, they are in need of various donations. The most needed items are baby diapers, formula and wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine products, plus-size clothing, school supplies (especially binders, dividers and spiral notebooks), along with non-perishable food items. They are also looking for new and gently used housewares.

The Community Garden program also incorporates the preparation of healthy meals made from organic ingredients. Members also learn to cook and enjoy various new dishes. The garden planning and planting happens from JanuaryNovember, so now is a great time to learn and get involved before you can get busy planning and planting! The clothing options can range from casual to business attire and there is clothing available in all sizes; infant through adult.

Garden Club. Their Garden Club holds meetings, where members decide what to plant and grow, while learning about various aspects of organic gardening. Anyone who is interested in gardening is welcomed by this Garden Club to volunteer with them. Volunteers can attend to the basic gardening by helping to weed, till, harvest and more, build vertical and raised beds and more.

KICKING OFF BREAST HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH - Good Samaritan Hospital, a member of Catholic Health, and the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition kicked off Breast Health Awareness Month with their annual Pink Flags Celebration. The celebration was held at the Catholic Health Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan located at 111 Beach Drive in West Islip.

Donations are made to the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition to support those diagnosed with breast cancer in a variety of ways, including assistance with bills, house cleaning, food, wigs, prosthesis and other free services. “Good Samaritan Hospital has been a partner of the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition since our inception,” said West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition President Margaret Campise. “When a need for breast health resources became apparent, the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition was developed along with the Breast Health Center at Good Samaritan. Both have worked hand-in-hand since 1993 to support those

diagnosed with and under treatment for breast cancer. These services are not only for residents in West Islip, but instead is for those throughout the south shore of Suffolk County.” This year, another milestone in breast health was reached—the 10th Anniversary of Good Samaritan’s Women’s Imaging Center, located at 735 Montauk Highway in West Islip. “Ten years ago, a community need to provide local breast imaging was fulfilled,” said Good Samaritan COO Col. (Ret.) John McMurray. “Good Samaritan’s Women’s Imaging Center continues to be a pioneer in breast health—the first in Suffolk with 3-D Digital Tomography, recipient of the highest accreditation scores from the National Accreditation Program of Breast Centers and named

an American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.” Good Samaritan’s commitment to women and their health care needs continues with new advances and education through the hospital’s Breast Health Center and Women’s Imaging Center. Breast Cancer Survivors Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

Councilman Terence McSweeney, Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the entire Babylon Town Board would like commend the North Babylon Youth League for their proactive dedication to keeping kids safe. The Youth League recently contacted the town looking for an AED machine. Councilman and chairman of public safety Terence McSweeney reached out to the North Babylon Lions Club, who together with the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce purchased one for them after recognizing the importance of having

one of these devices readily available. Councilman McSweeney, who is also a 17 1/2 year member of the FDNY and 21 year member of the North Babylon Fire Company also recognized the importance of this machine stating he has witnessed countless lives saved with effective CPR and the use of the automated external defibrillator. “I was thrilled to see the youth league reach out to the town board for guidance on how to fund the purchase of the AED. All parties involved in this really worked together and that’s what it’s all

about”. The NB Lions Club held a fundraiser to raise the money for the AED, and the North Babylon Chamber of Commerce pitched in to offset the cost. “This is really about one community coming together for the greater good” added McSweeney. It’s estimated that communities with comprehensive AED programs that include CPR and AED training for rescuers have achieved survival rates of nearly 40 percent of cardiac arrest victims.
