Kathy Cunningham is BVAC’s featured artist for the Rotational Art Program, held at Astoria Bank located at 180 West Main Street in Babylon Village. Kathy is an artist/art educator who has lived in West Islip for 30 years. She retired from teaching art for 31 years in the North Merrick Public Schools. She also taught art at Taipei American School, Taiwan. She has been published
numerous times in School Arts and Arts & Activities magazines and was a member of the American Press Association. She has taught teacher workshops, and has had several workshops at the West Islip Public Library and other Suffolk County libraries. Beside showing at Art by the Falls in Babylon Village, she also has exhibited at the Nathaniel Conklin House; the Carriage House at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum; the Southampton Cultural
Art Center; the Huntington Arts Center; Emma Clark Library, Setauket; and the East Islip Arts Council. She has had several one-person shows at the West Islip Library. Flowers add tremendously to the serenity and beauty of a funeral. But there is a point when “too much of a good thing” is not in the interest of all concerned. Now, I know that the florists dislike it when I write an article like this one, but remember, I also recommend renting caskets to save money. There are alternatives to sending flowers. You can bring pictures of the deceased to share with the family. You can donate the money to a charity of your choice or a charity the family selects. You can send food to the home for the family between visiting hours or after the funeral. You can put money in an envelope and give it to the family and allow them to make the decision of what memorial they would like to see benefit from their loss. The question I am asked most often is, “What happens to all the flowers?” Well, some of the flowers are taken to the church (maximum of two pieces); some are taken to the cemetery. When possible, some are given to nursing homes or other churches or charitable groups that may need flowers for the evening. The flowers that cannot be donated or given away are simply discarded. Remember, flowers do add to the beauty and serenity of the funeral, but also remember there are other alternatives to sending flowers, which I have mentioned above.

School Pride Shines School’s turf field. The parade featured a class float done collectively as a school this year, as well as clubs and organizations, elementary school students and administrators, sports teams and members of the homecoming court. Prior to the game, senior athletes from the football and cheerleading teams, along with their parents, took to the field to be recognized by the crowd. The marching band performed “The StarSpangled Banner” and “God Bless America” before the Eagles took on the Kings Park Kingsmen. The
Eagles scored a touchdown in the first minute of the game, giving them an early lead. West Babylon used that momentum and dominated for the rest of the game, defeating Kings Park 34-21. The halftime show featured performances by the marching band and varsity cheerleaders. Following the game, the homecoming dance welcomed more than 650 students. Baylee Napolitano and Marc Esposito were crowned the SCHOOL PRIDE SHINES - West Babylon School District showed off its Eagle pride homecoming queen and during the homecoming parade and game on October 7th.
