Hearing loss, when left unaddressed, can compound the difficulties that people with Alzheimer’s and their families already face. But in many cases, the appropriate use of hearing aids can benefit people with Alzheimer’s.” There is strong evidence that hearing impairment contributes to the progression of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing of spoken language and sound, regardless of other coexisting conditions. But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the

In recognition of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, Long Island Hearing is joining the Better Hearing Institute (BHI), a member of the Alzheimer’s Association Early Detection Alliance (AEDA), in urging caregivers to address hearing loss in people with Alzheimer’s and to pay attention to their own hearing health. In recognition of October as Fire Safety Month, Marion G. Vedder Elementary School in North Babylon received a special visit from members of the North Babylon Fire Department. During the visit, the kindergarten through third-grade students received an up-close and personal look at a fire truck and all of its parts. They also participated in the department’s smoke house, which taught vital burn prevention

Learning Fire Safety techniques through a fun and safe simulation. The house was filled with a nontoxic, odorless smoke to teach children how to properly evacuate a building that is on fire. Following the smoke house lessons, each class received coloring books and plastic fire hats. Additionally, the fourth and fifth-graders participated in an assembly program in which the firefighters reviewed the importance of fire safety and prevention.

following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a proﬁle for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ... Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far

designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. After reading a favorable review of his clothing line, First

Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro

finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.

When it came time to choose a community service project for her Girl Scout Gold Award, North Babylon High School senior Arielle Gelosi, a member of Troop 3163, chose a cause close to her heart – breast cancer awareness and education. In 2008, Arielle’s mother Theresa Gelosi passed away from breast cancer following a two-year battle with the disease. In order to successfully obtain the Gold Award, a Girl Scout must create a service project that will not only provide her community with immediate assistance, but will also continue to contribute to the community in the future. For Arielle’s project, she is organizing a community breast cancer walk to help raise funds and awareness about the disease. The walk is scheduled for Saturday, October 26th from 2 to 6 p.m. on the track at North Babylon High School. Community residents are invited to attend and participate. “I feel that early detection is essential,” said Arielle. “If my mother had found her cancer earlier, she may still be here with us today. If I can have one person, because of my project, go and get themselves checked and detect it early, it will all be

When once more the sky appears blue like the calm waters of a tepid tropical sea, I am restored again, breathing deeply and at ease, achieving a state of elation and high spirits. When we lose someone we love, their absence is forever with us. Immediately following our loss we are keenly aware of the absence of our loved one every moment of everyday. We mourn. We cry. We learn to cope with the loss; of their physical presence, their encouraging words, their love and support. But as we sit and watch a graduation or attend a wedding or witness a baptism or just observe something that we used to share together; like watching a mother and a child eating an ice cream cone or sitting on the beach, we think for that one special moment, “I wish mom (or dad, our sister, brother, spouse or our child, etc.) were here.” Acknowledging their ever-present absence from our lives.
