Babylon Village Arts Council will be presenting its fall offerings, starting with featured local artist Robert Graff, who will be displaying his work at Astoria Bank located at 180 West Main Street. On October 6th, at Jack’s Jack’s Coffee House, located at 223 Deer Park Avenue, Spoken Word featured poet Nancy Keating will read her works beginning at 7:30 p.m. Her work has been published in several anthologies, as well as numerous literary magazines and webzines including Iconoclast, Chaffin Review, and Long Island Quarterly. She is the author of a volume of poems, Always Looking Back, and two chapbooks. She was first finalist in the 2015 Gival Press poetry contest. A graduate of Bucknell University and the University of Minnesota, she is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing at Stony Brook University. She lives in Babylon, New York with her husband, fellow poet

In its twelfth year, the 2nd Thursday Concert Series commences on Thursday, October 13th, with Greg Cornell and the Cornell Brothers, a Brooklyn-based acoustic roots band, bringing its blend of Americana, bluegrass, roots country and old time blues to the Babylon area. The free concert will be held at the American Legion Hal,l located at 22 Grove Place. On October 16th, the Sunday Classical Series at the Babylon Library will feature The Studio 7 Piano Trio, featuring Annette Perry, Kurt Coble and Vytas Baksys. The music begins at 2 p.m. at 24 South Carll Avenue. This series is made possible n part through grants and in partnership with the Friends of the Babylon Library. Signs Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is holding its 4th annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmindale Lanes in Farmingdale on October 22nd. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Athletic Hall of Fame On Sunday, October 9th, St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School will welcome five individuals and three teams into its Athletic Hall of Fame. Throughout the history of St. John’s Athletics, numerous athletes, coaches, and teams have made a significant and lasting impact that has inspired the present and future members of the school and community to strive for higher achievements and positive involvement in SJB’s athletic programs. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place during SJB’s Homecoming Celebration on Sunday, October 9th. The celebration will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Mass in the auditorium followed

by a pancake breakfast and pre-game festivities. SJB will be hosting Xavier High School and the honorees will be acknowledged at the football game during halftime. A reception for inductees, their families, and friends of SJB, will follow the game in the school’s Cougar Café. This year’s classes of honorees feature five outstanding individuals; Byrne Gamble, Varsity Football Coach, Sister Elizabeth Moore, OSF, a former Cheerleading coach, John Young ’72 (posthumously), wrestling and football, Olivia Galati ’09, softball, and Danielle Wilson ’06, basketball. Also being inducted will be the 1980, 1981 and 1982 Metro Bowl Championship Teams.

“As we celebrate SJB’s 50th Anniversary, it is our honor to celebrate these Metro Bowl Championship Teams and terrific individual alumni athletes and coaches who are a tremendous part of our history!” stated Ms. Nan Doherty, Principal. During August, Edward Lee, local artist, held an art workshop targeting patterns within an overall design. Participants’ artwork will be displayed at the Babylon Library during the winter. Thousands of New Yorkers are choosing to preplan/ prepay their funeral and burial expenses. In doing so, they recognize that it is smart financial planning and provides great emotional relief for themselves and their loved ones. Preplanning your funeral will allow you to make your own funeral plans, but more importantly, preplanning will spare surviving relatives and loved ones from the emotional burden of having to make decisions at a time of great stress and trauma.

It Is A Time To Be Accommodated, Not Accommodating

When making funeral arrangements, I often hear the grieving family worry about this person or that person. The family worries about how people would find out about the funeral and how they would get to the funeral home in time for the funeral. They worry if they should have visiting one day or two days, or no visiting at all. When asked for advice, I recommend the family to do what is best for them. It is the immediate family that must be accommodated by all others. It is not the obligation of the immediate family who has just suffered the loss of their mother or father or wife or husband that need worry about what everybody else wants. It is everybody else’s job to make sure the immediate family should be accommodated by everyone else and not be worrying about accommodating everyone else’s wishes. Under most circumstances, there isn’t any place in the world that if a person truly desired to come to the funeral, he or she could not get to New York in less than 36 hours. If the family wishes, they can delay the service for a day or two, but it should be the immediate family’s choice and not delayed at the insistence of others. It is difficult enough to cope with the loss of a loved one without worrying about the needs of everyone else. It is not selfish of the immediate family to only consider their needs, but rather it is selfish of others not to consider the needs of the immediate family. After all, when all the rest of the world returns to their normal life, the immediate family must begin to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.

Dozens of dedicated volunteers recently joined together at Gilgo Beach to participate in the annual Coastal Clean-Up Day - a global event that assists the American Littoral Society (ALS) in documenting the waste that washes up on our shorelines. The information collected helps ALS with its ongoing investigation and education regarding the source of litter in our water and how to best eradicate

it. ALS promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat while protecting our coasts from future harm. This effort also brings awareness to the importance of keeping our waterways clean and protecting our precious wildlife. Hundreds of cigarette butts, bottle caps, straws and plastic items were removed from Gilgo Beach, totaling 182 lbs. Many local school districts, students,

scouts, athletic teams and residents participated in the initiative. Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly joined the volunteers at Gilgo and commended them for their time and efforts to help keep the Town of Babylon beaches clean and beautiful. The volunteers will each received Certificates of Appreciation for their community service.
