Moving Right Along By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic
delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even
the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

Continuing with its work to teach students about the importance of leading healthy lifestyles, Babylon Memorial Grade School introduced a series of new recess activities and games to students this September. Two colorful beanbag checkerboards, two refreshed hopscotch stations and two foursquare games now brighten up the playground’s blacktop, and several pieces of large group equipment have been added to the daily options. A reorganized structure for large group games now calls for students to take on leadership roles as referees, which enables them to help peers learn new activities and gives those with medical limitations the ability to remain involved in the day’s events. The school also plans to start a walking club during recess times in the upcoming weeks, during which students will have the chance to track their steps using pedometers. “Previously, students who were not interested in taking part in the large group game [soccer or football] would have a limited number of options to keep active during recess times,” explained guidance counselor Francesca Johnson, who coordinated the refurbishment project. “These increased options now provide an outlet for all students to participate in something of interest to them.” The new activities were introduced at the start of the year and will be updated as weather calls for more indoor recesses. A neighboring Girl Scout troop aided in the painting of the blacktop surfaces, and supplies for the project were donated by the Home Depot and Walmart in Farmingdale.

The summer reading program has become a tradition at the school. Each June, students are provided with gradeappropriate recommended reading lists and encouraged to make time throughout their vacation to read. This year, students in grades five and six had the chance to choose from
such books as Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Among the choices for grades three and four were The Borrowers by Mary Norton and The Houdini Box by Brian Selznick. The mission of the program is to encourage students to view reading as a lifelong recreational activity. The school extends its appreciation to the Home Depot in Bay Shore for donating the bulbs.

County Police Department and the North Babylon Fire Department leading the way, Legislator D’Amaro marched with new high school principal Jonathan Klomp down Deer Park Avenue to the high school as spectators filled the sidelines in a show of community spirit. The Bulldogs went on to defeat local rivals Copiague High School, 39-8, in the football game held later that day.
Loving To Learn As part of the West Babylon School District’s commitment to lifelong learning, students throughout the district were encouraged to participate in its summer reading and math programs. At South Bay School, 39 students successfully completed both of the optional summer reading and math assignments.
Each read a minimum of 10 books and logged at least 300 minutes of IXL Math practice on the computer during the summer. In addition to having their names and pictures in a hallway display, the students were recognized at an assembly program and individually received certificates of completion.
“As a North Babylon resident, I was again proud to march along with my neighbors in the annual Homecoming parade,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “It was wonderful to witness and experience the spirit and enthusiasm from all who came out to support North Babylon High School. Go Bulldogs!”

It was a community affair as the North Babylon High School varsity football team took on the Copiague Eagles to cap off the Homecoming 2013 festivities. During the game, Jahjuan Winters and Brandon Sobotker each scored two touchdowns and rushed for more than 100 yards apiece. With the stands overflowing with proud alumni, community members and family members all wearing their Bulldog blue and white,
the varsity team handily defeated Copiague by a score of 39-8, improving their record to 2-1 in Suffolk’s Division II. The celebration began days earlier with the high school’s annual Spirit Week. Students and staff showcased their creativity during Nationality Day, Twin Day and Superhero Day before wearing their blue and white to cheer on the fall sports teams at the Friday afternoon pep rally. The Board of Education and high
school administration maintained the spirit as they led the way through town in the homecoming parade, during which the marching band, kickline and cheerleaders performed, while the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes showed off their spirit banners. With community support and student spirit, Homecoming 2013 successfully demonstrated North Babylon pride.

Calling all Long Island educators! The deadline to submit an application for NEFCU’s “Funding Your Ideas” (FYI) Teacher Grant Program is fast approaching. Educators across Long Island are encouraged to apply by October 31st for this grant that supports innovative classroom projects designed to enhance the student learning experience. NEFCU, a leading credit union serving all Long Island’s banking needs, has already awarded nearly $100,000 in grant money since the program began in 2004. “In our 75 year history, NEFCU has always valued the local educators that have helped to inspire our future leaders,” said Valerie Garguilo, Vice President of Marketing & Community Relations for NEFCU. “The FYI Teacher Grant
Program provides funds to teachers so it’s possible for them to motivate their students in an innovative, impactful and lasting way.” The FYI Teacher Grant Program is open to NEFCU members who are certified teachers within grades pre-K-12 in a Nassau or Suffolk County private, public, or parochial elementary or high schools. The NEFCU Teacher Grant Committee of the Board of Directors awards the FYI Teacher Grants once per year in December. Educators can receive a grant of up to $250. Piegari has many 2nd and 3rd place Roadeo finishes in his long career, but this is his first New York State win. Other participating NICE operators were Richard Kubik of Seaford and Joseph Springer of Brentwood. The City of Long Beach sent operator Robert Herbst. Operators from across the state qualified for the state championship by performing well in their regional Roadeo’s.
Drivers compete in a series of events, including conducting proper pretrip vehicle inspections and knowledge of industry standard safety habits. Finally, operators test their driving abilities in a timed competition through a marked course. The course, marked off with traffic cones, featured 10 simulated road conditions or maneuvers that operators encounter on a daily basis. Maneuvers such as turns, stops, and handling serpentine courses highlighted the participants driving skills while operating a 40-foot Orion bus.

Renting A Casket For Cremation
There isn’t any law in New York State that requires the use of a casket for cremation. There isn’t any law that prohibits a funeral home from renting a casket for cremation. If you have been told this you have been misled. It is the cemeteries and crematories that require a rigid receptacle for cremation. The reason the crematories require a rigid receptacle for cremation is so their personnel does not have to directly handle human remains. Being a funeral director for over 30 years, it never made a great deal of sense to me to purchase an expensive casket for cremation. Since I purchased my first funeral home, I have been renting caskets for cremation. In 1990 the casket companies finally developed a casket within a casket that could be rented for cremation. The interior casket is constructed of fiberboard and has the same type of interior as a regular casket. The exterior casket is constructed of solid oak. The rental unit is identical in appearances as that of an oak casket that costs $2500.00. The rental casket is used for the visitation at the funeral home; it is taken to the church for services and no one else other than the family knows the casket is rented rather than purchased. After all the services are completed, the interior casket slides out from the exterior casket for the cremation. The cost for the use of the rental casket is as follows: $400.00 for the interior casket which is cremated and $400.00 for the rental of the exterior casket. Of course, you can also purchase an inexpensive casket for a cremation for approximately the same amount of money, or you can purchase a casket that has been designed for cremation which is as expensive as all the other caskets. Veteran NICE (Nassau Inter-County Express) bus operator Pat Piegari of Lindenhurst won top honors at the statewide bus “Roadeo” championship, an annual bus drivers’ skills and knowledge competition held recently at Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach. This is the first time the competition, sponsored by the New York State Public Transit Association, has been held on Long Island. The annual Roadeo, celebrating its 26th year, tests some of the state’s best bus operators, while promoting safety, driving skills and professionalism. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding its 16th Annual Youth Waterfowl Program, open to young hunters on Long Island ages 12 to 15, on November 2nd and November 9th and 10th, Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. The program is a collaboration with the New York Conservation Officers Association; Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation; Shikar Safari Club International; Ducks Unlimited; and South Shore Waterfowlers Association. The Youth Waterfowl Program, an instructional course, is set for November 2nd. Youth Waterfowl Days, which are specially designated hunting days, are set for November 9th and 10th.
