Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of

Spinning Symbols Imagining a world where peace is more than a thought, Babylon Memorial Grade School students joined millions worldwide in participating in this September’s Pinwheels for Peace project, an international art and literacy endeavor. In their art classes, students worked with teacher Patricia Stork to transform the traditional childhood symbol – the pinwheel – into an image for peace. After handcrafting their pinwheels, the students

wrote their thoughts about peace on one side and on the other demonstrated their feelings visually. After assembling the hundreds of pinwheels, the students displayed the finished creations outside of the building in the shape of a peace sign to show their solidarity and commitment to promoting world peace. Ms. Stork documented the project on video, which incorporated time-lapse photography and audio clips of the students explaining what peace means to them.

Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by art teachers Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan of Coconut Creek, Fla. as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In the first year, groups in over 1,325 locations throughout the world were spinning pinwheels. Last year, more than one million pinwheels were spinning in over 3,500 locations worldwide.

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be hosting Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week course new to the Long Island region. Classes will meet on consecutive Wednesdays from October 16th to November 20th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Administrative Conference Room. This series gives caregivers the skills and confidence to better manage their own well-being, while assisting loved ones. Caregivers will be taught how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings and locate helpful resources. Attendees will also learn how to increase their ability to make tough decisions and balance their lives. For those who would like to attend Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a $25 donation is suggested to help defray the cost of The Caregiver Helpbook but is not required to attend class. The headline has been used countless times by every media outlet imaginable to commemorate the retirement of a living legend, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But it’s fitting. So very fitting. Yankee fan or not, as we have seen over the last few weeks – the entire season, really – there is no one who can deny the pure talent, the class and dignity with which this man played the game for 19 seasons. In city after city, members of opposing teams eagerly lined up to honor a pitcher the likes of which this game will never see again. Plaques and gifts were presented, generous donations were

made to his charitable organization and crowds rose to their feet in extended standing ovations, marveling at their good fortune at being able to witness a slice of history. Of course, no one does pomp and circumstance quite like the New York Yankees themselves. I was fortunate to be a member of the sellout crowd who turned out for the team’s official sendoff to the Sandman, on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. What an amazing display of affection from the team, past players, managers, coaches – and the fans, who seemed to not want the opening ceremony to end. The last player to ever wear the #42 had his number retired alongside the greats in Monument Park, surrounded

by the family of the original #42, Jackie Robinson. Metallica entered the field to perform the “Sandman’s” selfappointed theme song live, as Mo ran out to greet the members of the former World Championship teams who lined the diamond. It was perfect, just like Mariano had been so many times before. What a priceless memory, up there right along with the countless classic moments he had helped orchestrate throughout the years. Nineteen seasons – pretty much the entire duration of my time as a baseball fan. That’s an absence that’s pretty difficult to get over. Baseball, quite simply, will never be the same for me. Thanks for the memories, Mariano. #42 Forever.

The American Red Cross has awarded a $60,000 grant to The Disability Opportunity Fund to support longterm recovery services for people with disabilities and their families affected by Superstorm Sandy. The Disability Opportunity Fund (The DOF) will use the grant to help 50 families develop housing solutions and navigate the rebuilding process for their homes. The services will include individual counseling, assistance in locating possible properties, and advising on rehabilitation to make dwellings handicap-accessible on Long Island over the next 12 months. The DOF is a community finance organization based in Nassau County. “We are thankful for this grant from the Red Cross,” said Charles D.

Hammerman, president and CEO of The Disability Opportunity Fund. “The resources will enable us to continue to provide assistance to people with disabilities, and their families, many of whom still have unresolved issues related to Sandy relief.” John Miller, CEO, Red Cross on Long Island, said The Disability Opportunity Fund is a valued organization for the people it serves. “The Red Cross is committed to helping all Superstorm Sandy survivors recover. This organization will help a vulnerable population of people on Long Island who still have Sandy-related needs.” Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red

Cross has received $307 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of mid-July, the Red Cross has spent or committed $260 million – 85 percent of the donated funds. Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey 11 months after the storm. As of September, the Red Cross has partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. Vocalists Honored During the September 19th meeting of the North Babylon School District Board of Education, the Board honored high school students Elijah Andrews, Daniel Benson and Carolyn Mistretta for their selection into the highly competitive

Nassau Suffolk Vocal Jazz Ensemble. The three students were chosen based on their outstanding auditions, sight reading ability and recommendations from their choral teacher Christina Henderson. They

will rehearse with students from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties and present two concerts this year, one at Adelphi University in January and the other at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in May.

State Honorees Three students at North Babylon High School have been selected for participation in the New York State School Music Association All-State Music Festival based upon their performance at last year’s NYSSMA Solo Festival. To congratulate the students for their hard work, the Board of Education and administration honored

Carolyn Mistretta (soprano II, women’s chorus), Jaclyn Schoelermann (soprano II, women’s chorus) and Kevin White (electric bass, jazz ensemble) at the September 19th Board meeting. The Board also recognized Lily LaFleur, Alyssa Loftus and Kelly Sisson on their selection as alternates for the festival. The New York All-State bands, choruses, orchestras

and jazz ensembles are honors groups comprised of the top students from school music departments across the state. The eight groups will be directed by renowned guest conductors and perform in one of three concerts at the Eastman Theater during the NYSSMA Winter Conference on December 7th and 8th.

Christopher Brodmerkel, a sixth-grade teacher and adviser of the Recycling Club at North Babylon’s Robert Moses Middle School, is the recipient of a $2,000 grant from the ING Unsung Heroes Awards Program. Selected from thousands of applications, Mr. Brodmerkel is one of only 100 winners and is currently in the running for three larger prizes, which will be awarded this summer. Working in conjunction with Tracy Marcus at

the Cornell Cooperative Extension Center at Cedar Beach, the grant funding will enable Mr. Brodmerkel and 75 sixth-graders in the Recycling Club to visit Cedar Beach and the 9/11 Memorial, learn about the dune ecosystem and its importance to Long Island, and participate in replanting efforts. The main objective of the partnership project between the RMMS Recycling Club and the CCE is to educate students about erosion

of Long Island’s local beaches, specifically the issues caused following Superstorm Sandy. “The main purpose of the club is to educate students on the importance of recycling and environmental awareness,” said Mr. Brodmerkel. “In addition, the Recycling Club actually collects and recycles paper, bottles and cans within the school. Without the club, these materials would be taken away as regular garbage.”
