Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. Saving Teen Lives The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Thursday, September 17th. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s evidencebased programs for teens. In addition to providing teen-focused intervention, treatment and recovery programs, LICADD’s services aim at preventing Long Island’s youth from becoming addicting in the first place. Programs like Too Good for Drugs seek to bolster children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program

(SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. These services are only a brief snapshot of the wide range of resources that LICADD provides: the agency conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment (SBIRT) and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement. Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole. But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all. Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages. Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate. Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school. Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore. No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable. To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children. And we can all do it together.

Twenty-eight Babylon Junior-Senior High School current students and members of the Class of 2015 have been recognized as Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board. These honors were bestowed upon the students based on their exceptional achievement on the national AP exams. “We are very proud of the 28 students who were honored as AP Scholars,” said Linda Rozzi, Babylon School District’s superintendent of schools. “This recognition follows months of hard work and commitment to academics. I extend my congratulations to both the students and their teachers

who prepared them well for these exams.” AP Scholar honors are awarded based on the number of exams taken and the students’ scores on those exams. North Babylon’s Boy Scout Troop 399 began a tradition back in July of 1977 that still lasts today summer camp at Yawgoog! The Troop attended Camp Yawgoog which is located in Rockville, Rhode Island the week of July 12th

through July 19th. For Yawgoog’s 100th season, fourteen boys and six adults attended camp, the scouts earned 47 merit badges, two scouts advanced in rank, the troop earned honor troop, took 2nd place

Today the waters are filled with energy, Rippled by wind bouncing waves I see. No white caps, only gurgling waves bubble along, A reminder of the well known swan song. The sunset tops the peaks with shiny balls, Plentiful where the reflection of the rays now falls. Just to watch how the water reflects the sun, This in itself is relaxing fun. Presently the wind is coming from the South, Pushing the waters toward the river’s mouth. There, it will connect with the Great South Bay, Where little waves with stronger undertows play.

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries is equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and the name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes, providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated, and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The realty is there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After this time, and after proper notification, funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that mom has passed and now they need dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us at any time.

Kayaking for a Cause

On Saturday, September 19th, the Town of Babylon hosted the first annual “Kayaking for a Cause” event at Cedar Beach Marina, bringing over 50 kayakers out to paddle in support of Amityville’s Hunter Squires Jackson American Legion Post 1218, which was recently damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy and vandalism. The total amount raised for the local veterans topped $15,000, made up of registration fees from the event, contributions collected from local businesses and a large donation from Island Park based American Legion Post 1029. “This event not only provided a great

opportunity for a funfilled day on the water but also for us to give back to individuals who already gave so much for this country,” said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, who organized the event. “I am proud that we were able to help the veterans of Hunter Squires Jackson Post 1218, as they work to get their building back to working condition.” A ceremony was held to laAunch the kayakers at Cedar Beach Marina, where Deputy Supervisor Martinez welcomed visitors and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, a retired Lt. Colonel of the United States Army Reserves, detailed the hardships that the Hunter Squires Jackson

post has faced since their facility was damaged. A check was presented to Post Commander Charlie Martin. Those participating in the event launched their kayaks at 9:00 a.m. and embarked on one of three trails, depending on skill level: 2.5 miles for beginners, 3.5 for intermediate and 5.5 for advanced. Kayakers had the opportunity to explore little seen areas of the Great South Bay including views of Cedar Island and sights of marine wildlife, such as snowy egrets and blue herons. Following the tour, kayakers were invited to the Cedar Beach Hut to celebrate the day’s festivities with a free lunch.

Fundraiser in Memory of Brittney The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholarships to help make their futures a little brighter. In the 18 years of her

life, Brittney touched the hearts of so many people with her love, smile and generosity. With your help, she can continue to do so.
