The Most Interesting Person in the Room Who you were, who you are, and who you will be are three different people.” - Unknown In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention. My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to flirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old. When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have

struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance. Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities. Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because

I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth. In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room. In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as flawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy). But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

In 1971, Paul Lauterbur, a chemistry professor at Stony Brook University was eating a hamburger at a Pennsylvania restaurant and had a “Eureka” moment about his nuclear magnetic resonance research and how it could potentially be used to image multidimensional objects. That moment of inspiration advanced his research that led to groundbreaking work toward the discovery of modern MRI imaging in medicine, and a shared Nobel Prize in 2003. Fastforward to 2018, Stony Brook University and the Long Island Section of the Institute of Electrical

and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) are recognizing the late Lauterbur’s achievement as an IEEE Historical Milestone. The ceremony, held at the soon-to-be opened Medical and Research Translation (MART) Building, included the unveiling of a bronze plaque, a presentation by Stony Brook and IEEE leadership, and discussions about new research involving MRI techniques, such as its use for personalized medicine and brain mapping. “Quite simply, the MRI is one of the most important medical discoveries of the 20th century,” said Samuel L. Green options in home siding If new siding is on the list of mustdo home projects this year, there are many factors to consider. Though it’s a transformative renovation, replacement siding is a signiﬁcant and potentially expensive undertaking. Therefore, careful consideration must be given to the materials used and their maintenance, longevity, insulation factor, and cost. Many homeowners also want siding that is ecofriendly. Sustainability is an important consideration for many homeowners. Data from the National Association of Home Builders’ “Green Multifamily and Single Family Homes 2017 SmartMarket Brief” indicates that at least one-third of singlefamily and multifamily home builders who were surveyed said that green building is a signiﬁcant portion of their overall activity (more than 60 percent of their portfolio). By 2022, this number should increase to nearly one-half in both the single-family and multifamily sectors. Green building has become an important and established part of the residental construction sector. Where siding is sourced, the materials

Reclaimed timber A house sided with clapboard, or a log cabin-inspired look, is iconic. These types of siding are typically made from insect-repellant pine, cedar, cypress, or redwood. While lumber certiﬁed by the Forest Stewardship Council is environmentally friendly, homeowners may want to seek out reclaimed lumber. This wood has history and causes very little environmental impact. Plus, timber salvaged from old buildings or fallen trees may be superior to new wood because it likely came from slow-growing, old trees with dense grain. Brick Avoid any negative environmental impact by choosing locally produced or reclaimed bricks — or those made from postconsumer content. The longevity of bricks can often offset the energy expenditure in their manufacture. Plus, many bricks are

made from natural clay, which can be an excellent insulator. Stucco HouseLogic says traditional stucco is made from sand and Portland cement mixed with water to make a usable plaster. It’s tough and durable — often lasting the life of the house. Eco-friendly variants include stucco made with an earth-and-lime mixture, offsetting the CO2 emissions associated with cement production. Stucco can reduce air infiltration that causes drafts in a home. Fiber-cement Fiber-cement is similar to stucco in that it is made from sand, Portland cement, clay, and wood pulp fibers. It can be fire-resistant and insect-proof and will not rot. It’s a stable material that can recover

almost 80 percent of the initial cost, according to the National Association of Realtors®. Stone This nonrenewable resource can be beautiful on a home and durable, but mining it can impact the environment. If homeowners can use reclaimed or displaced stone, those are more sustainable options. Manufactured stone, which is cement and other materials molded to look like stone, is also aesthetically appealing and more ecofriendly. Replacing siding is a signiﬁcant undertaking. Homeowners can consider sustainability when selecting replacement siding materials.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today unveiled a new feature for the ‘Choose LI – Local and Independent’ website. The website, which is a collaborative effort that seeks to raise awareness, advocate and inspire the community to support local and independent businesses on Long Island, has been updated to include a searchable and interactive map of all farmstands, farmers markets, fish markets, vineyards, breweries, cideries, and distilleries in Suffolk County. “Suffolk County is home to some of the most diverse and exciting agricultural and fishing selections in the entire state of New York,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “We want our residents to be able to take advantage of all the products that were grown and harvested

right here in our own backyard. The new feature on ChooseLI.org makes it incredibly easy for residents to find these locally grown products and meet the commitment of spending 10 percent of their weekly food budget on local products across Suffolk County.” The new searchable map currently lists 118 farmstands, 31 fishmarkets, 26 farmers markets, 60 vineyards, 33 breweries, 2 cideries, and 3 distilleries. Anyone who visits the website can interact with the map, finding the exact address, hours of operation, phone number, and website of the business they are looking for. The ‘Choose LI – Local and Independent’ initiative asks local residents and visitors to choose goods from local and independent farmers and fishermen

to preserve Long Island’s heritage industries and cultivate a vibrant, diverse and robust economy. Residents are encouraged to “Take the Pledge” and commit to spending 10 percent of their weekly food budget, approximately $17.60, on local and independent food goods. Businesses can consider creating promotional specials using the #1760 and #ChooseLI hashtags to help pledgees meet their weekly commitments. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, New Yorkers spend approximately $176 a week on food. An analysis done by Suffolk County’s Department of Economic Development and Planning states that if just 10 percent of the over 450,000 household located in Suffolk County commits

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced that the Suffolk County Police Department’s ‘TextA-Tip’ mobile phone line is now live for the start of the 2018-2019 school year. The ‘Text-A-Tip’ system is designed exclusively for individuals who have information about an impending threat to school

facilities across the County, and will allow residents to confidentially share any information pertaining to a threat in a Suffolk County school. The "Text-A-Tip" system is being facilitated by Nixle, a commercial service provider that the Suffolk County Police Department has used for several other

applications. Anyone who has information regarding a possible threat to a school in Suffolk County can use this service by texting the number 888-777. In the body of the text write “TIP SUFFOLK” followed by the message and the name of the school. The tips will then be configured to generate e-mails and text

messages to the Suffolk County Police Department. The tips will be directed to the Suffolk County Police Department’s Communications section, who will determine where to route the tips based on their content. From there the Suffolk County Police Department will launch an immediate investigation to

determine the credibility of the threat. Tips will be monitored on a 24/7 basis, and school districts will be notified accordingly. While the system is confidential, intentional false tips will be prosecuted. This service comes at no additional cost to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Law On Who Controls Your Funeral When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided and usually they agreed with each other, if the individual was not married the parents made the decisions, if no parents the brothers and sisters and last on the list were aunts, uncles or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed. NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decedent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who has married for second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral - speak to an attorney and fi ll out the necessary paperwork. I would then suggest taking it to an attorney for review. Supporting Eagle Scouts Sebastian Camino, a 17 year old Boy Scout in Babylon’s Troop 1, had an important project to complete in his quest to become an Eagle Scout. He researched one of his passions, animal welfare, and learned that The Islip Animal Shelter in Bay Shore had very specific needs: two new storage cabinets and a sitting bench for visitors. That’s when he reached out to Douglas DeLorenzo, President of Wayside Fence, and a former Scout Master for Troop 1. On Saturday, September 1st, in Wayside’s wood shop, the boys, and some of their dads, got busy assembling and painting the prefabricated

shelving and bench. When everything was ready to be delivered to the shelter, the Scouts carried the items to a waiting van, and off they went. “Sebastian and his fellow Troop members had a blast with this project”, said DeLorenzo. “They truly worked as a team to make something both practical and meaningful. It was a joy to witness, and the shelter absolutely loved and appreciated what these kids did. They put their hearts into it and it showed. Parliament Place Elementary School of the North Babylon School District hosted a ribbon-cutting for its new state-of-the-art playground on the first day of school, September 5th. The ribbon-cutting commemorated the five elementary schools in the district that will be opening brand new playgrounds for the 2018-2019 school year. Attending the ceremony was Parliament Place Elementary School Principal Drew Olson, Superintendent of Schools Glen Eschbach, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Educational Operations Barbara Butler and Board of Education trustee John Schneidawin. Fifth-grade students from Staci Manning, Gregg Morisie and Dave Heins’ classes also attended the ribbon-cutting. Olson welcomed back the students to a new school

year during his speech, and also introduced administration and staff. “This is an historic moment at Parliament Place School and at all schools in North Babylon,” Olson said. “We are here to celebrate the official opening of the five brand new elementary school playgrounds that have been constructed all around the North Babylon School District. I know that all elementary students are very excited and can’t wait to experience these playgrounds.” Afterward, the fifthgraders had the privilege of being the first students to experience the exciting new grounds, which consisted of six swings, slides, monkey bars and more. Along with Parliament Place Elementary School, other schools in the district that will have new state-ofthe-art playgrounds are

Woods Road Elementary School, William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School, Marion G. Vedder Elementary School and Belmont Elementary School. This is part of the district’s capital improvement project. All playgrounds will officially open Sept. 9.
