Crunched By Tech By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In an age where technology has overtaken society, it is only natural to pause periodically and wonder, at what cost? These days, most everything can be communicated via text, various messenger apps, social networks and emoticons, with little reserved for good oldfashioned person-to-person contact. As the masses jump on the latest smartphones and tablets the moment they’re unveiled, it is hard not to think how did we manage to exist before? Personally, I did not own a cell phone until the later college years, if even then. Prior to that, it was

payphones and asking the teacher for a pass to the Main Office to call home in an emergency. Nowadays, walk into any elementary school and smartphones are just as common a trend as the latest sneakers and accessories. What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty. First off, no eight year-old needs a smartphone. An old, hand-me-down standard cell phone in case of emergencies? Perhaps. And once you move on to middle school and high school, the potential for cheating, texting during class and surfing the web instead of paying attention to the lesson at hand skyrockets. I don’t care

what disciplinary actions are set in place; the integrity of the classroom immediately declines with each cell phone that enters. This is not to say that those in college or the workforce are any better equipped to balance the technology they “have to have” with a little thing called reality. No, we are just as likely to send 47 text messages rather than have a phone conversation, to use a cute little smiley face in favor of typing an entire word, to keep in touch via Facebook rather than schedule a lunch date... That said, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my newly pre-ordered iPhone 6 :)

Returning To The Classroom The excitement of North Babylon Union Free School District’s students on their first day of the 2014-2015 school year did not wear off during the rest of their first week. Throughout the first week, students arrived at the district’s seven buildings ready to tackle the academic challenges before them. The Class of

2015 entered its final year at North Babylon High School, while the Class of 2027 began kindergarten in the district’s five elementary schools. Children at William E. DeLuca Jr. Elementary School stepped off of their buses eager to begin their first day. Teachers and administrators, including Principal

Norann McManus, greeted students and assisted them off the school buses. “I have children who run up to give me a hug before school everyday,” said McManus. “Seeing how happy they are, and especially seeing how excited they are to begin school, just makes my day.”

This is the fifth year for the Over 50 Fair celebrating “60 is the new 50.” According to Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, “Because Americans are living longer, they should seek to live life to its fullest. There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. The purpose of the Fair is to show people where to find them.” The 2014 Fair will feature over 90 exhibitors and 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines on Sunday, September 28th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This year’s event at the Melville Marriott will offer free valet parking. Attendees can spend the day learning about new products and services directly related to life over age 50. Tahira Farooque, of Bayport, a home health aide, came to the Stony Brook event to be more prepared for her job in case there is a cardiac arrest. Most of the participants, including many Stony

Brook University students, came simply to learn hands-on CPR in case they are ever in a position to use the skill. “You should do everything you can to save a life,” said one student Mai Hoang. “CPR buys time and gives an ambulance time to get to the scene.” Steve Tannenbaum, 61, of Merrick, a lawyer who now travels the country with the Acompora Foundation talking about the importance of onthe-spot CPR, survived a sudden cardiac arrest in 2009. He was playing softball and collapsed on a field. A nurse and a former EMT rushed to his side and performed CPR. Long Island Heart Walk Set More than four thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 21st to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5, in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy
